  • Must Read for Anyone Starting a New Venture Must Read for Anyone Starting a New Venture
Format: Hardcover
I highly recommend The Launch Book. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Sanyin Siang and she is an authentic and talented coach and advisor to some of the world’s most accomplished leaders. In The Launch Book, Sanyin utilizes her extensive network and impactful stories to identify the essential ingredients on how to discover and pursue new ideas. As a venture capitalist and investor for the past 22 years, I can attest that Sanyin captured the critical elements an entrepreneur should consider in creating a new business. I both read and then listened to The Launch Book and continually found myself saying, “that is so true” and “exactly”. I am thrilled to have a book filled with easy to understand and effective wisdom that I can pass along to friends as they are launching their next adventure. I have already gifted this book to three people who are each in the process of starting new companies. Additionally, my 18 year old son read The Launch Book and found it to be a helpful roadmap as he launches his college career. Well done Sanyin! I’m hoping for a sequel! ... show more

  • Required Reading for Those Looking for the Motivation and the Explicit Tactics to Launch Their Next Big Idea
Format: Hardcover
The Launch Book is essential reading for anyone looking for the motivation and tactical steps to launch their next great idea. Sanyin does an incredible job of weaving in inspirational stories from top leaders, behavioral economic theory to support key concepts, and exercises that get you actually applying learnings to real world applications. Of the many sections I booked marked, my favorites included her tips on how to better control your time by intentionally scheduling time for yourself; using the concept that environment matters to find a pump-up song to play whenever you are down; and the chapter about learning to co-create with your customers (I've since directly applied this learning for a personal project). Only 130 pages, Sanyin packs in an incredible deal of content in short, easy to digest chapters that kept me engaged and thinking critically. The book should be required reading for anyone who has a long-shelved ideas or businesses that they've been waiting to launch into action. ... show more

  • A practical guide that takes the scary out of having a launch moment....
Format: Hardcover
The Launch Book breaks down for the everyday person feasible steps to activate yourself and take the next step and 'launch' into whatever you have previously perceived might be 'just beyond' your reach. By reading candid quotes from business leaders who were once where you were makes the advice given in this book both tangible and believable. The book does not make promises it does not intend to keep, but provides evidence of why launching yourself/a company/an idea can be AWESOME and FUN, your perception of the process is what makes it that way. ... show more

  • So-so, falls short
Format: Hardcover
If you're into reading these type of motivational books for business or personal development, there's nothing in this book that you probably haven't heard before. If you're new to this type of genre, you might find it interesting and possibly motivational. There are many other books of this type that do a better job of covering the topic of launching a new idea, business, or career. One thing that does stand out is the book's unique design, which is cool, and the bite-sized chapters that can be read in less than 5 minutes. But overall as a life-long learner this book fell short of my expectations. ... show more

  • Mediocre book mostly reviewed by author's friends
Format: Hardcover
I was very curious about this extremely mediocre book having only five-star reviews, so I started looking at them more carefully. Well, almost all of the reviewers have only reviewed one item, this book, and almost all of them who list a location list Durham, which is where the author teaches. So I think it's pretty safe to say that the author has a lot of friends, colleagues, and students who are willing to write reviews for her. Of course, that in itself doesn't make the book bad. What makes the book bad is that it is a series of stories about successes that mostly seem to be about the individual's immense privilege and spectacular luck. For instance, we're told about a woman who quits her high-level publishing job (where she was on track to become the first female CEO of a major publishing company) to spend more time with her kids. This "launches" her as a successful children's book writer because National Geographic contacts her and asks her to write a series of children's books. Obviously, this is not exactly useful to most people. This is in a chapter called "Be Your Best Self," so I'll just work on that while I wait for National Geographic to call. That's not to say that no one in this book grew up in a nonprivileged way. It's just that by the time they "launch," pretty much everyone is in a high-level career earning lots of money, surrounded by willing mentors and an impressive network. In other words, if you're already in a spectacularly good place in terms of your career and it's not quite spectacular enough for you, this might help. But the author seems blind to the reality of most people's lives and to how big a factor luck plays in most of these stories. She does give lip service to the importance of being prepared to act so that you can take advantage of luck, and that's absolutely a valid point. But the people she profiles start with lives that most of us can only dream of. Aside from that, the book is a collection of stories with a lot of cliched and insubstantial ideas supposedly drawing lessons from the stories. There's nothing here that hasn't been said already in a million how-to-succeed books. I think that a certain type of person might find some of the stories inspirational. For me, they were too far from anything I recognize as reality. ... show more
