Description

A high-ranking scientist has been kidnapped, and a secret British intelligence agency has just recruited Deighton’s iconic unnamed protagonist—later christened Harry Palmer—to find out why. His search begins in a grimy Soho club and brings him to the other side of the world. When he ends up amongst the Soviets in Beirut, what seemed a straightforward mission turns into something far more sinister. With its sardonic, cool, working-class hero, Len Deighton’s sensational debut and first bestseller The IPCRESS File broke the mold of thriller writing and became the defining novel of 1960s London. • Hard to read
But well worth it. Len Deighton is my favorite author. I grew up on his Bernard Samson stories and I still read them all every five years or so, when my despair about current espionage writing gets me down. The issue for me with The Ipcress File is that in 2023 and being from the US rather than UK, much of the lingo and wit is just too far over my head. Nonetheless, if you've read all 10 of the Samson books, and you want another series, these "Harry Palmer" books would be worth your time. Also, I am so thrilled to see Deighton books getting the classic treatment they have deserved for so long, so despite owning them all in more than one format, I will continue to support these as they hopefully are all published. ... show more

  • WOW!
Among the way I had decided to write that this was the most confusing book I've ever read. Almost quit. But curiosity keep me going because I've read other Len Deighton remarkable books and felt this one had to come together. For a first book it is amazing. It's a spy book so I'm not going to write any spoilers. Just read it the the end. You'll see. ... show more
