Nice little set! I see a lot of people complaining about the size, but I really like it. I am in my 50's and wear glasses to read some books but I do not need them for these editions. The smaller size makes them perfect for reading in bed without a heavy book and makes them perfectly portable if you want to read while waiting anywhere. I like the design too. Also great size for kids and at a decent price. I was worried when I saw someone had a misprint in the 2nd book of this set, The Fellowship of the Ring, since I just started that book. I checked my edition and it seems they have found and corrected that issue in subsequent printings. I have not yet read the 3rd and 4th book nor looked through for page printing issues but I will be doing that now that I saw these printing problems mentioned. I will update if I find any problems, but so far, so good. I purchased my set in January 2025. I know it is hard to tell from photos without comparison so many people are feeling deceived by the size, but it isn't as if they were trying to hide it. You just need to check the description. This is something I do all the time now with books on Amazon after accidentally ordering horrid Create Space editions of books in the public domain, so I automatically double check the details on every book purchase now, just to be safe. Looks like we will have another 18 years before these books enter the public domain, then I imagine all kinds of random editions will start popping up. ... show more

I enjoy reading the Lord of the Rings so much as a kid that I had get this. Love the design of the covers and the small frame of the books makes it easier to carry around. I know it's easy with technology now but to me picking up a book and flipping though the pages is so enjoyable.

This is a review for the book set, not the stories. The book set looks really beautiful. Each book is small enough to easily travel with, but not so small to make reading difficult. That said, given these are about mass paperback size, some may find the font too small. The set can also be a nice collector piece. Either way, it will look good on the bookshelf. ... show more

Really nice set with a couple details wrong. It’s a much smaller book than you think. Only 6 inches tall. The second thing is the books came in the set out of order (not a big deal since you can swap them when you open, but why????) the other thing that’s irritating is the flipped font and black/red script between the 3 LOTR books. Why not make it the same? It ruins the shelf appeal. ... show more

My son bought this set of books and is very happy with them. Due to reviews, he and I were concerned about the small size and text, but we actually ended up really liking both - kind of fun to hold and read. My son likes that it is convenient to take one of the books with him places. Although the text size is small, the good margin, line, and text spacing make reading pleasant. Binding and paper quality are very nice. The books all arrived in good condition. The only disappointment was that the set did not come with the cool case as advertised. I love reading the Lord Of The Rings books. I have them on Kindle, Audible, and now hard copy. I usually follow along to the Andy Serkis Audible, read them to my kids, or just lose myself in the book. The box set doesn’t take much room up, they are small, but are a great collection.

First, the obvious. They are much smaller than one might anticipate. They are not so small as to be absurd (as I've seen many people complain about the recent vinyl bound pocket editions); and the typeset and margins have been adjusted so that the words are not so small as to be difficult to read. But nonetheless they will be dwarfed (hobbited?) by the other books on your shelf. I've included a picture of the single volume LOTR that I was replacing for a sense of scale. Secondly, the finish seems lacking for a $45 set. The dust jackets are not the typical laminated glossy material you find, they are matte paper (and not heavyweight paper at that),so the colors are rather duller than one would expect. They will absorb every bit of skin oil your hands have to give, and any dirt or smudges will not be able to be cleaned off. If kept on while reading, I doubt they would last more than one pass. To box in general is rather nice, though I thought the print and Smaug design would be inlaid or embossed, but it is neither (and looks a bit cartoonish up close). Finally, the slip case came damaged (as pictured). Of course this is possibly to no fault of the seller or the product design and could have occurred during shipping. I really do like that the cover design called back to the original releases and artwork, and the slip case seems to be well constructed in spite of mine being damaged; the price itself does seem to have been reduced as the original price printed on the bottom was 50 pounds ($65 USD). Whether that is getting a good deal or a sign of lacking sales is up for interpretation. All in all I was hoping fora good bit more, but I bought them to read, and I believe they will do just fine at that. ... show more
