I've loved them ever since and finally decided to get a good general introduction. This is exactly the ticket: the who, what, where, when and styles of many Greek vases. This is a lovely book, with wonderful pictures. The vases have lots of activity in their designs, which is very interesting. The authors lead you through how the artists of the time depicted various subjects commonly found in the vases and talk of the different symbols and their meanings. An excellent book with works mostly from the British Museum. The text explains the art on pottery in a clear way. Many of the samples are extraordinary. The main flaw is that the opening chapter on the different types of vases was so tedious I almost stopped reading the book. That chapter should be at the end as an appendix. ... show more

I bought this hoping the illustrations would do the subject justice. The book outdid my fondest hopes. The pictures in full color are magnificent. Even without the Amazon discount the book is a bargain. Get one before they are all gone.
