Description

A TODAY Show Read With Jenna Book Club Pick! A powerful novel about the construction of the Panama Canal, casting light on the unsung people who lived, loved, and labored thereIt is said that the canal will be the greatest feat of engineering in history. But first, it must be built. For Francisco, a local fisherman who resents the foreign powers clamoring for a slice of his country, nothing is more upsetting than the decision of his son, Omar, to work as a digger in the excavation zone. But for Omar, whose upbringing was quiet and lonely, this job offers a chance to finally find connection.Ada Bunting is a bold sixteen-year-old from Barbados who arrives in Panama as a stowaway alongside thousands of other West Indians seeking work. Alone and with no resources, she is determined to find a job that will earn enough money for her ailing sister’s surgery. When she sees a young man—Omar—who has collapsed after a grueling shift, she is the only one who rushes to his aid.John Oswald has dedicated his life to scientific research and has journeyed to Panama in single-minded pursuit of one goal: eliminating malaria. But now, his wife, Marian, has fallen ill herself, and when he witnesses Ada’s bravery and compassion, he hires her on the spot as a caregiver. This fateful decision sets in motion a sweeping tale of ambition, loyalty, and sacrifice. Searing and empathetic, The Great Divide explores the intersecting lives of activists, fishmongers, laborers, journalists, neighbors, doctors, and soothsayers—those rarely acknowledged by history even as they carved out its course.Named a Most Anticipated Book By: Washington Post Book Riot Electric Literature LitHub ELLE The Millions Goodreads Reader’s Digest Read more

  • Good Book
I did not know much about the building of the Panama Canal, so this was enlightening. I thought the characters were realistic and interesting. They do not teach history realistically sometimes, or at least they didn't when I was in school; hopefully it has gotten better, as I don't think most of us realized what an imposition and even a tragedy this was for the Panamanians. In any event, this is a page turner, and when you're reading it, you hope for the best for everyone. ... show more

  • A Fascinating Story, Well-told.
This is a book of tender, personal stories, set against the backdrop of the construction of the Panama Canal. In all the world history courses I have taken, never have we been enlightened with the effects the Panamanians endured. Their world changed forever in the course of a few years. There is always a price to pay for “progress”. ... show more

  • a collection of characters
The book has a collection of interesting characters, and uses the building of the Panama Canal as a backdrop to their individual stories. Well written, but the absence of a compelling plot made it more like a set of short stories.

  • Interesting
I enjoyed this story. It was a fast read, cause every time I put it down, I picked it right back up. I read the one star reviews and I almost didn’t read this book, because of them. I understand what people are saying, but I was pulled into this story because of all of the characters. It’s wasn’t hard to follow and she did tell what happened to each one. ... show more

  • History entertained with a heart
I loved this book even though I was skeptical at first. The plethora of characters was difficult to keep straight in the beginning, but the author expertly wove them all into a beautiful, heart warming story. Thank you, Cristina Henriquez!

  • The canal is not the main character
The book focuses on the many people around the building of the canal. A few helped dig the canal, one was a doctor trying to eradicate malaria and many others whose lives were impacted by the canal. All the subplots create an interconnected story of the Panama Canal.

  • Viva Panamá
As a Panamanian, I’m perfectly familiar with many of the themes brought up by Cristina Henriquez in The Great Divide. The injustices suffered by both Canal workers and Panamanian citizens during the construction of the Canal is well documented and often taught in schools here in Panama, but to weave all of this into a narrative of family, love and loss makes it all the more poignant. The history of the Canal is brought to life in a very humane, loving and entertaining novel that is not easy to put down. Cristina Henriquez has made good use of her Panamanian roots and I thank her for it. ... show more

Was looking more of the construction process. Centered on a few families
