  • Forget the Harbor Freight load leveler, buy this one instead
I bought this after mistakenly buying and using a Harbor Freight load leveler. I tried to get by with that one, but the beam flexed and the roller slipped off the track. I threw that thing away since buying this one was cheaper than a visit to the emergency room. The only drawback is that it has a relatively short span of travel compared to the Harbor Freight load leveler, but that's nitpicking and it's really not a big deal for my purposes. It works absolutely beautifully - easy to turn the jackscrew, smooth movement, super sturdy, and nothing flexes or binds. Well worth buying if you're changing engines - you can balance the engine well enough to slide the transmission on and then re-balance it (almost) to drop the engine and trans into the car together. ... show more

  • Leveling feature is great
This is a nice heavy duty system that is super simple to operate. The leveling feature is solid and works extremely well. The ability to easily tilt the motor more/less made getting the engine out very easy and required less effort than previous jobs where we had to adjust chains, swap the mounting bolt locations, or pushing the engine up and down to find the right angle. It's amazing how something so minor can make a job much easier and this engine load leveler did just that. ... show more

OTC makes good tools.

  • This tool is an absolute must for engine removals
Replaced a 2.9 the six Ford engine in a 1990 Bronco II. This load leveler was absolutely critical in getting the engine out and back in without any extraordinary or heroic moves. I am happy to say that the use of this device saved all of our digits and perhaps an arm or two. The quality of the tool is top notch and I will hang it on my shop wall for use at a later date. It is likely this will be a much later date because it’s not every day that you’re replacing engines in your car. But you really do need the load leveler if you’re going to do the shade tree mechanic thing as I did. I save money by borrowing my neighbors engine hoist. I was going to try and extract the engine using the front and loader on my tractor but there wasn’t enough overhead room. The only complaint I have is that the chains need to be a little bit longer so that you can adjust how they reach around the engine to find the perfect lift spot. I cannot say definitively that the use of this load leveler will increase my gas mileage on my new engine or even make me a better human being. But it did make the job much easier. So there’s that. ... show more

  • Well worth it. The tilt feature is great
Works flawlessly. Saves so much time and hassle while getting everything hooked up. I only advise, if you use the long sides of the engine mount tabs ( utilizing the threaded holes in the front and back of the heads) cut the short side of the tabs off on the two you bolt to the back side of the heads so you dont scratch your firewall up. If you use the short sides on top of the heads or thru the manifold, no worries at all. ... show more

  • Can't beat the price.
I was disappointed to find the handle ripped through the box and the chains carved a large hole into the fresh new "OTC" decal must of happened during transit. Aside from the threaded rod appearing to be made of a grade 5 material ( I could be wrong) with a cheap zinc coating the rest looked impressive. It actually had caged ball berings at the end of each shaft collar and all of the pins were perfectly centered. The roller on the bottom of the beam does not have berings might be a good thing considering a guy posted he lifted a 1200 pound 59 Cummins with it. All of the wear surfaces were generously coated with sylicone grease and the welds appeared well manicured. All in all impressed with the Chinese manufacturing process would of paid more for a tool steel ARP bolt quality thread. ... show more

  • works well, chains a little short?
I used this to lift a Ford 302 and it worked well. The tilting feature worked well and was very easy to use. It was easy to turn the crank which tilts the engine - no binding at all. The chains seem to be very strong. One problem I had was that the chains were a little too short and wouldn't reach to the exhaust manifold studs. So I had to take the top-most aluminum intake off the engine to get them reach. And then, the chains still rested on the valve covers. It wasn't a big deal, though. I'm happy with the tool ... show more

  • Can make lifting & balancing a load easy
Review by Quilt Lady's hubby: Bought this because I had to pull a motor out of a PU truck to install a long block. We always had one of these in the shop when I was a Tech, but wanted better control when hoisting that thing. Sadly, I could not use it because it was a 2011 Dodge Ram truck with the "Cab forward" design & there simply was NOT enough room between the engine & the firewall to use it. Ended up having to use chains after all, but the Load Leveler worked great once the motor was out & we had to lift the new long block, etc. Under normal conditions it should work nicely. I was worried at first that the crank handle would get in the way, but it pivots on the long threaded rod. My experience has been that OTC makes great products. ... show more
