I was so thoroughly submerged in a rich fictional world, that for hours I barely came up for air.” —Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air, NPR “This expertly paced thriller ...has the kineticism of a well-crafted miniseries.” —The New Yorker When a teenager vanishes from her Adirondack summer camp, two worlds collide Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. • THE book of the summer
This book has been touted as THE book of the summer, and honestly? It lives up to the hype. An easy five stars. Set at a stunning lake estate and summer camp in the Adirondacks, the atmosphere is perfect for an immersive mystery. The setting alone is rich with potential, but Liz Moore’s writing takes full advantage, pulling you in with every turn. What makes God of the Woods stand out is the layers. It’s a slow-burn mystery where the plot unravels bit by bit, but somehow the pacing still feels fast. There are multiple characters, multiple scenarios, and plenty of suspects to keep you on your toes. I couldn’t guess where it was going—always a win in my book. This is no run-of-the-mill whodunit; it’s a literary mystery that’s smart, well-written, and full of surprises. If you’re into a good brain workout with a side of suspense, this one’s a must-read. ... show more

  • Mesmerizing-- but unsatisfying
There is much to love about this book. As a mystery it is a smart, engrossing page-turner with so many red herrings and plausible suspects I was left guessing until the end. Yet at her core Liz Moore is an artist whose meticulous attention to structure, environment and character authenticity makes this story so much more. The story is a slow burn, alternating two time periods which allow character motivations and hidden secrets to be revealed through long forgotten (or purposefully repressed) memories. While the main themes are consistent and simple, each chapter peels back more and more layers, revealing how ingrained class divisions and sexism really are. **WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!** While the fate of the missing siblings, as well as other mysteries, are eventually revealed, the story ends too soon. While I personally dislike neatly wrapped-up endings, and respect authors who allow their readers to interpret events on their own terms, I was frankly frustrated at how abruptly this story ended. Moore's other bestseller, The Long Bright River, was also great but ended a little too thoroughly and neatly imho; maybe the author was swinging for the opposite effect here, and overcompensated? The only characters whose denouement was truly satisfying (if sometimes tragic) were Carl, Judyta, and to some extent Louise. So much of the story was devoted to Alice, yet we never learn what became of her after Bear's body was discovered. And how did she react to her awful husband and father-in-law? I would also have really liked to know the outcome of the Peters' and John Paul's trial too. Did they hopefully suffer some consequences, if only ostracism from their phony peers? And TJ-- where did she go when her life was upended? She was such an enigma throughout the story; what did she want for herself? And Barbara-- her relationship with John Paul was only hinted at; was there ever anything there? Her ending also seemed untenable to me. Where will she end up eventually? There's definitely enough unfinished business for a long epilogue. I plead you, Ms. Moore-- please finish the story, even as a part 2! ... show more

  • completely original with hints of many influences
My immediate thought was that this was heavily influenced by "The Interestings" by Meg Wolitzer which is a fantastic story. And as a summer camp story rooted mostly in the mid 1970's and similar geography (Adirondacks vs the Berkshires) there is much overlap. Having said that this is an original and interesting story. Liz Moore's characters and sense of time and place are remarkable. She nails the overt mysogyny of the 1950's and early 60's and the more subtle but no less insidious prejudices of the 1970's. The rich Van Laars are probably a touch overdone but they are deliciously awful. The Hewitts as the caretakers to their estate and Directors of their summer camp are a well drawn oppositional force and there is lots in between. There is the disappearance of a camper. There are flashbacks to another one 15 years earlier. Are they connected? Was the second disappearance in part by the changed pathways of life for so many still in this story? Moore's descriptions of the remoteness of the Adirondacks and the potential for danger weaves well with human danger that seems to also surround the families. I could not put this down and loved it. There are false paths and interesting minor characters and she jumps between characters and timelines with every chapter but it's well marked and for the most part the jumps work fine. As a camper of the 1970's most assuredly 99.99% of us had amazing awesome experiences and made friends for life. In this slightly gothic tale that may not be so evident. ... show more
