Description

Hockey’s bad boy needs to clean up his reputation… Bennett James has built his career at being the best, on and off the ice, and now it’s come back to bite him. The media has turned against him, and with a near career-ending injury, he needs to clean up his act and prove that he’s serious about the game. For Bennett, working with his old coach at his alma mater feels like a step back, but it might be just what he needs. …and she’s just the girl to help him do it. Grace Wentworth has always been the good girl, and she’s tired of that stigma. She wants to prove that she can get down and dirty with the best of them. The problem? She doesn’t know how. Bennett will teach the good girl how to be bad, if she pretends to be his goody two-shoes girlfriend in front of the media. But what happens when the game becomes real? Read more

  • This is yet another great read by Micalea Smeltzer
This is yet another great read by Micalea Smeltzer. I have loved all of her books, and this one is no different. I usually read them as soon as they are released, but I had a baby a week before this one came out, so it put me a little behind. I'm so glad that I finally had the chance to read it though. I had problems putting it down. Grace is Olivia and Trace's daughter. She is daddy's princess. She's rich, but she doesn't act like it at all. Yes, she likes expensive things, but she's really down to earth and a little naive. She does have a big heart though and she sees the good in people. She's finally off to college. This book starts when she gets there for the first time and meets her roommate Elle. Who would have thought that getting a ride to Target, would change her life. Bennett is a pro hockey player. He was injured though, and his coach hates him. He's at his old college to train with his old coach to get back into shape to play again. He needs to change his image though. Honestly, he's a man whore. He needs a good girl "girlfriend" and Grace is perfect for that. She wants to learn to be bad, he's the best teacher for her. Bennett has a lot going on though with his career. I'm not going to get into it, but his coach is a total slime ball. I wish he would have hit Tanner. It would have been nice to see Trace apologize to him. This is a great read. I love these characters together. ... show more

  • An amazing and entertaining third installment!
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed reading the third installment in the Us series. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first two books, but The Game That Breaks Us has by far been my favorite one yet. I really enjoyed reading Grace and Bennett’s story, and thought they were amazing main characters. I liked their personalities and chemistry together, and how their relationship slowly progressed from friends to something more meaningful. I loved that the book was told from both Grace and Bennett’s alternating POV, and how hockey was incorporated into the story as well. I always enjoy a good sports romance, and this one definitely fit the bill. It had just the right amount of humor, romance, and hockey to make it entertaining to read. I loved Micalea Smeltzer’s writing style, and how she told Grace and Bennett’s story. The previous two books in the series were written in first person/past tense, while The Game That Breaks Us was written in first person/present tense. I enjoyed this style of writing much better and thought Micalea did an excellent job with every aspect of the story. Many of the secondary characters were wonderful as well, and I loved getting to see a lot of familiar faces from past books by the author. There were certain parts of the book that I didn’t care for, but overall it was an amazing read and I’m extremely glad I didn’t give up on this series. I was also thankful the conflict wasn’t too terribly long, but I did find it a little unrealistic that Grace believed it so easily. I was very happy with the ending, however I had hoped the epilogue would have gone farther into the future. But I have a feeling there will be more books in the Us series, and I will definitely be looking forward to reading them if there are! ... show more

  • Bizarre Twist
The Game That Breaks Us was actually a really fun read for the first two thirds of the book! The characters seemed well-developed and their relationship developed slowly in a way that really made sense. The way that they began dating and fell in love was sweet and I loved reading it!! Bennett was definitely a funny yet strong male character while Grace was sweet but adventurous and they both genuinely grew and changed as the story progressed. Then about 2/3 in it was like I was reading a totally different book by a different author about two characters who knew nothing about each other. The "plot twist" was SO silly and unnecessary and Grace's reaction was out of character and honestly made me dislike her. I just couldn't get behind her again. And the situation was only resolved by Bennett which made it even more annoying that he had to prove himself to her about something that she never should have left him for. The Game That Breaks Us went from a book that I could see myself reading again to a book that will sit on my Kindle Cloud shelf forevermore. ... show more

  • Is love everything?
It's the ultimate face off - the good girl Grace vs the bad boy Bennett! Grace and Bennett meet on the campus grounds where she will be attending classes and where Bennett has been benched due to his injury. A friendship is formed from the get go and their relationship starts to evolve. Bennett needs to clean up his reputation in the hockey arena and comes up with a game plan to have Grace help him. Grace, in return, wants Bennett to teach her to be bad! While this game is being played out real feeling start to develop and neither of them really know what to do with these feelings or if they should act on them. Just when the story is getting hot and steamy...a delay of game is called! Will their love for each other stand or will it go to the back burner? Will the game continue on or will love be declared the winner? Grab this book to find out the answer! ... show more

  • good for the most part
Format: Kindle
I enjoy this author. This isn't the best I've read from her. But I still enjoyed the story. It was a very fast read that is definitely following the standard expectations of a college / fake dating scenario. Sometimes a book that follows the expected path is comforting to read. That was the case here. I really liked Bennett as a hero; he was flawed enough to show character growth, but not irredeemable. Grace, I liked for the most part, though she really disappointed me toward the end (as did her "friends"). And I didn't feel like there was enough story left to get her back in mine or the hero's good graces. I'm not even going to dwell on how I felt not sense of good closure. I am confused about the old reviews on this book (2016) when the publication date indicates it was released in 2022. A little research shows that this is a rewrite of a previously released book under a different title (an author note would've been helpful). Since this is a re-release, I wish more time had been taken to give the couple a better ending instead of the abrupt one. I wanted to see them work through the thing that separated them and address her family's undeserved treatment of him instead of it all being swept under the rug. It really would've taken a book that was 80% 5 stars and put it at 100% 5 stars. ... show more

  • Read it :)
I loved this book up until the end. I really liked both characters in this book and felt like I got to know them. The story moved along at a good pace and it never had a dull moment. You could feel that both characters had feelings for each other and you were hoping everything would work out for them. But then the end comes. After everything they've been through, Grace made a stupid mistake. It was childish and annoying. I felt like Grace was one of the few that had their head on straight. I also wish there was just a little bit more hockey in it. I also wish there was a second book so that we can see where these two end up. Overall, the book was great and I would recommend it. ... show more

  • Grace and Bennett
The next book in the Us series is definitely a game changer for Grace and Bennett. They make a deal and agree to be fake gf/bf for media in order to make Bennett look better to and for his team. Grace wants Bennett to teach her how to be a 'bad girl' instead the goody-two-shoes that she's always been. He goes home with her over Christmas/New Year break and they fall in love, even though it wasn't part of the plan. Bennett finds out a secret about his team coach, who tries to ruin his reputation. While at the Wentworth house, a scandal rocks Bennett who is arrested, but makes bail. He must fight for himself and his career, as well as Grace in order to get back to the game he loves. I loved this book, like the rest in the series, and highly recommend it. The Game That Breaks Us can be read as a standalone, although I do recommend, personally, that you read the first two. ... show more

  • An awesome read!
have enjoyed and loved every Micalea book that I have read. The Game That Breaks Us was a fun and enjoyable read. Grace has decided to go away for college to be independent and away from her family. Bennett is a hockey player and finds himself at his alma mater after getting into some trouble with this team. I did enjoy how Grace and Bennett met. It was funny and I just knew their interactions together would be awesome. When Bennett needs help, he enlists Grace and things get really intriguing from there. Every time these two were together, it was just awesome. Their banter and interactions were fun, sweet, and eventually hot. And they have come to benefit each other than either expects. Their story was not the typical good girl meets bad boy. There is so much more to it and it was great uncovering the layers. I also loved getting to see my man, Trace again. Swoon that man. This book had great writing and fantastic characters. Though this can be read as a standalone, I think reading the books that this series is a spin-off from and also the previous books in the US series would make the experience that much better. Overall, an awesome read. ... show more
