Great book even for experience riders

I've been riding motorcycles for almost my whole adult life, but mostly for day trips, commuting, and an occasional weekend trips, but staying in an hotel or motel. I decided that I wanted to do some serious touring, avoiding motels or hotels, and sticking to camping. I bought this book as my starting point, assuming it may give me a few tips, but I would still have to do a lot of work to figure out what I needed. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. As other reviewers have stated, it is thorough and helpful to almost any level of rider. Some of my favorite parts of the book: 1. Mind powers. Riding long distances really require discipline and focus, and the author gives some good tips. The best advice is figuring out your own maximum mileage range. 2. Riding gear. A lot of good information on both being safe and prepared while managing cost. I thought I knew a lot about gear, but the author gave me some new ideas along with how to take care of waterproof gear. 3. Trailers. Yes, trailers. Based on the advice in the book, I decided to purchase a motorcycle trailer to carry more stuff. Not only did he describe what I should consider in purchasing it, but also what I needed to understand after purchasing it. The author deserves a commission from the trailer company! 4. Riding in comfort. My favorite section. My experience from riding long distances is muscle soreness. Although I haven't eliminated all of the issues, the author's suggestions were very useful. With several weeks, I might have found information on the internet that would be as good or maybe better than this book. But it took me a few days to read this book, so it saved me tons of time. My copy of the book is all marked up with highlighter and tabs. The book saved me money in a few places, and cost me some (the trailer!!!!). I'm only hitting the highlights of what I enjoyed. The whole section on electronics is extremely useful, for example. This book is one of the best I've purchased about motorcycling. I think even an experienced traveler could gain something from it, but if you're planning a trip, this book should be your starting point.

not bad but quite basic
Format: Paperback
a good guide to long distance motorcycling. Some great points about riding comfort (which is key) such as using bicycle pants for a soft seat and using a wet tea towel to keep cool. Worth a read as there are some things in this book that you would not have thought about. Well researched and documented. Enjoy!

Great, useful information on all aspects of touring!

This book contains information on nearly every aspect of touring: equipment, clothing, planning, emergency planning/preparedness, and modifications on your bike to enhance performance and the touring experience. I checked it out from my local library, initially. After reading it, I knew I needed a copy for my personal library. Some of the highlights for me, personally, were: a discussion on synthetic fabrics and clothing, which enhance comfort, and endurance in all weather conditions; planning for a trip, and what to do beforehand, in chunks of weeks (8-12 weeks before, do this; 4-6 weeks before, do this; 2-3 weeks before you leave, do this; etc.) -- this alone, though so simple, has helped me reduce my stress before a trip, by showing me how to defuse my concerns by answering every question/issue, in a timely manner, before the day I leave; discussion on installing/using different devices such as heated clothing, GPS, cell phones, and other equipment; some basic instructions on installing a sub-fuse block to handle additional electrical devices; and more. Even though the book was published a few years ago, it is still highly relevant. There is more that the author discusses, compared to what I have mentioned. It is an excellent resource to consult. Much can be learned, and by following the author's instructions and guidance, stress can be shed and pleasures on the ride, amplified. Cheers!

Wanna be inspired to travel the world on your bike? Get this book!!

I rarely write reviews for Amazon, but felt compelled to do so here. I recently bought a BMW F800ST (sport-tourer), and got the bug to read up on possibly doing a cross-country trip next spring or fall. Dale covers absolutely everything you need to know. From preparing your bike, to buying what you need to take a trip on it (from weekend jaunts to several months), to preparing yourself (both mental and physical), to proper clothing (get a one-piece riding suit--or some other type of armor-reinforced jacket and pants--after all, how much is your life worth?!?), to how to pack and what to do six months, three months, one week and one day before you begin your trip. It's so comprehensive I can't even begin to note all the things he covers. He even gives web addresses for many of the products he recommends. And this is NOT a product-pushing book; he recommends what works for him, and for others he has traveled with or otherwise knows. Hey, Dale's done all the work for you here. Spend the 14[..] on the book and benefit from his advice. Or, you could spend months on the web researching and basically come to the same conclusions. Your choice! Great Travel Advice From a Seasoned Pro
Format: Paperback
Dale Coyner never disappoints. I got the first edition (new ed comming out currently) and it has been an enjoyable read. I've skimmed through it and am now reading it. Although some technical equipment details can be dated, the basic principles / advice is timeless. Dale's writing style is enjoyable, and he discusses points I've never thought of before, e.g, different material's approaches to waterproofing, low impact gear washing, etc. His advice is based on his and other's extensive personal experience, and is not afraid to discuss both the pros and cons of some "sacred cows" of the industry. I highly recommend it, for both content and general reading enjoyment.

This book is for beginners, intermediate, and advanced motorcyclers. If you are just learning about taking trips on your cycle you can get all the basics. As each chapter progresses, you go indepth to explore the finer points and get good information you may not have thought about. You also get a review after each section and can use that to skip back to for a refresher. I learned a lot, found several things I had been doing incorrectly, and read several chapters a couple times to let the information "sink in". I have met the author and highly recommend this book!

A lot more than simple travel ideas!

This is one of the most entertaining introductions to motorcycle traveling I can imagine. Coyner not only helps to organize the gamut of planning and preparation surrounding a trip, but covers some of the most useful topics for modifying your motorcycle(s) for even more pleasure during the journey. As with the best of any "how to" books, reading this work absolutely makes you long to hit the road.
