I bought a new computer on my vacation just so I could play this game. I guess I've come full circle. I got away from computer games because the graphics weren't very good and on the advanced games, the play was choppy. I don't think I will ever play xbox again. The graphics are clearer and it's just so much better than the console. Now, the only thing I have to complain about is the play itself. You have to be careful about not coming into a city after 8 pm as the NPC's are too stupid to run from vampires and they always seem to get killed. I have a thing about seeing innocent characters out of the game, I guess I just want the game to play out without deaths of innocents. Yes, I know it's just a game and the NPC's are just window dressing, but hey, I've got my vices! Adding the ability to build my own house and Hey! Why is it so hard to find enough goat horns for the lights?! You'll know what I mean when you play the game. All the add-ons really flesh out skyrim and it definitely makes it the best game I've ever played. There are a few bugs I've had, which have forced me to backtrack the game to make things right but they are annoyances at best. Overall, you'll probably find it as good as I did. One thing though, the Dragonborn theme. I really can't say I like it at all. Visiting an island with giant mushrooms and finding black books really suck. It reminds me of what eating a peyote cactus must be like. Overall, I can't give this less than a 5 star. Definitely the best game out there, even if it's getting older. I just hope they keep producing add-ons! UPDATE>>>I also want to add about modding the game: it changes the whole experience, making it a 100 times better than before. Go to nexus, download nexus mod organizer, (Not nexus manager, it can mess up your game!) and once you've learned to use it, you can change the game, big time: different weapons, armor, dozens of new followers, you can get new house, quests. There's even an adult theme where you can make character's bodies closer to realistic ones, you can even make them walk around nude if that's your thing. But if you can think it, chances are there's something on the nexus that can make it happen. If you have enough ram, you can even make the graphics a dozen times better. Try it, you'll love it! ... show more

  • GET THIS GAME - ONLY IF YOU CAN HANDLE STUNNING, HEART-BREAKING BEAUTIES (and pretty landscapes, of course)
Platform For Display: PC Edition: Legendary
As far as I'm concerned, this is the masterpiece of Massively Single-player Online Role-Playing Games. THE masterpiece. The look, the characters, everything is great. But it gets better, because this is one of the few games you can actually IMPROVE. You can acquire MODS, most at no cost, with which you can improve everything from the character's looks and skin texture to the looks of the rain and the flow of river water and the clouds in the sky and on and on. There are thousands of these MODS, all designed to improve some aspect of the game. Simply wonderful! In fact, if you are of that bent (what testosterone-tortured male isn't?), you can substitute a particular model for your female character that will quite literally make you fall hopelessly in love with her - with a VIDEO GAME, guy! - with a string of ones and zeros! Pitiful! Sad! Terrible! Glorious! Stupendous! Wake up, man! Get a life! Or . . . get a wife! In Skyrim, you can. Yes. You can actually get a "real", "live", "walking", "talking" wife who looks like she is the very best, the top-of-the-line world-class model who just stepped off the pages of the most exclusive women's clothing magazine. She's not just beautiful. Oh, no, sir. She is painfully, heart-breakingly gorgeous. Yes. She WILL break your poor, weak little heart. She will rip it out of your chest, still beating, smash it to the ground, and then with supreme coldness of spirit, she will walk back and forth over your poor, dying heart with her six-inch stilleto heels. Back, and forth. Back, and forth. A little smile playing about her full, burning, red, gorgeous lips - lips you will dream about that night. Anyway, you get the point. This is a good game. Really good. I don't give 5 stars easily, but this deserves SIX stars, at least for the beauties of Skyrim. Genuine beauties you'll never see in your entire real life - only in your dreams; or, in the videogame, Skyrim. These females will scar you for life. For LIFE, man! Jump - only if you're ready. If you've got the stone-hard guts and rip-out-able, stompable, poor little heart that won't last five minutes with these women. Not five minutes. But then again, that's just my unqualified opinion, for whatever that's worth. ... show more

  • Great game if you like roaming the wilderness
Platform For Display: PC Edition: Legendary
First video game I have ever played so I can't compare it to anything else. Took me two weeks to get it installed on a MacBook Pro but that's mostly my fault. Why this game? Happen to hear part of the soundtrack on Pandora and I liked what I heard so eventually (after ~6 months) decided to find out more about where this great music came from. Discovered the game on Amazon and the price was right so I thought what the heck. I'm hooked and even purchased additional copies for my two daugthers. And, now we all have something in common to talk about which is also a great side benefit. As a senior citizen (over 65), video games have not been my thing but the beautiful mountainous scenery does remind me of my youth backpacking in the wilderness, including extended trips throughout the High Sierras. This game brings back fond memories of those times. I really like the fact that my avatar can wonder off in any direction and just explore. The wealth of free mods available (40,000+) to customize the game has also been fun to play with though I've only tried a few. I'm still only at level 4 after an entire month of playing so I still have a lot to learn. All the game terminology (like leveling, NPC, mod, DLC, ENB, AI, etc.) took some time to get use to but I'm getting there. Even though the game has been out for almost 4 years, I highly recommend it to anyone who loves to go hiking in the wilderness. Works pretty well on older PC/Mac's like my 2011 MacBook. An external 2-button mouse is pretty much a must. The built-in track pad (esp. on a Mac) is difficult to use with this game. I run the game on a BootCamp partition loaded with Windows 8.1 entirely dedicated to this game, so I have disabled all unnecessary background services (like filesystem indexing and background virus scanning) to improve performance somewhat. Make sure you allocate at least 70 Gbs to the BootCamp partition. Resizing is almost impossible to do after the fact because the Mac filesystem partitioning scheme isn't all that Windows friendly. Skyrim is a 32-bit executable so there's no need to support more than 4 Gbs of memory but a fast GPU with 1 Gb of video memory is a real plus. Tip: I often set the TDETECT console command to disable AI detection so I'm not bothered by various creatures and bandits trying to attack my avatar every 5 minutes. It allows you to simply explore the beautiful landscape and enjoy the great views. ... show more

  • Extremely challenging and frustrating
Platform For Display: PC Edition: Legendary
Incredibly challenging even on the easiest difficulty setting, with jiggly camera and mouse controls that make even clicking on an inventory item hit-or-miss, difficult to use menus and non-intuitive interfaces, not to mention nearly total absence of a demo or introduction area, this game basically throws a player into the deep end and you're left floundering trying to figure out everything out on your own. Beyond that, the game glitched and froze during my first hour of playing. I couldn't figure out what had happened, couldn't get it unfrozen, and the game eventually shut itself down somehow, before I could get to the task manager to force-quit it. I can't possibly imagine how this game could have won any awards, much less Game of the Year. Sure the graphics are absolutely gorgeous, and the sound is great, but when it comes to gameplay, this game is nearly unplayable. For starters, it's a huge challenge to even control your character, and if you can't do that, how are you supposed to accomplish anything? The camera and mouse are both so wobbly, that doing things like looking at an item and getting the mouse cursor just right to get the option to pick it up is an exercise in frustration. I never could figure out what the icons in the top slider-bar thing at the top of the screen were, because when I tried to move my mouse cursor up there to hover on them, it just makes my character look up. I guess I am really stupid not to have intuitively known what they are. I thought this would be a fun, entertaining adventure-fantasy game, and I had heard such good things about it. It's practically a cultural phenomenon! There must be something seriously wrong with me, I guess, because all I accomplished in this game was repeatedly dying (even on the easiest setting) while using items when I didn't want to use them because the interface sucks, and not being able to find my way around because the map is incomprehensible. I am a very poor video game player, I admit that, but I would have thought the easiest difficulty setting would at least allow me to fumble my way through and enjoy the adventure. This game seriously could have used a tutorial option! I did not enjoy my attempts at playing this game at all. I wish I could get my money back. ... show more

  • A truly amazing game
Platform For Display: PC Edition: Legendary
I want to start off by saying that Skyrim is one of the best games ever made. If you are unfamiliar with the Elder Scrolls series, then I will do my best to introduce you to the concepts. Imagine a huge open world filled with mountains, open plains, castles, abandoned forts, immense cave systems, and populated settlements dotted around the landscape. Now fill that world with dragons, civil war, and tons of monsters. That is what you get out of Skyrim. There are literally millions of quests to complete thanks to the new radiant quest system (albeit most of these radiant quests are more like jobs given to the player from different factions you have the option to join, which include things like killing this monster, clearing this dungeon, or threatening this person). You play as the dragonborn, the only one with the ability to permanently kill dragons by absorbing their soul, you must confront Alduin, a dragon whose appearance signals the "start of the end times" or end of the world. This version comes with all three DLC packs that are available for Skyrim, and they include: Dawnguard: adds two new factions to join, the Dawnguard (vampire hunters) and the Volkihar Vampires. You can choose to join either faction within the game. There is a ton of content to this DLC, but the gist is that the vampires want to blot out the sun so that they can wander during the daytime and no longer feel threatened. You can choose to help, or hinder them. Hearthfire: Adds a mechanic where the player can buy a plot of land and build their own home. Not much more than that other than a few new characters and items to go along with the houses. Dragonborn: Adds a whole new island, Solstheim, to the game. The player encounters the first dragonborn and battles him for control of an ancient power. The ancient dragonborn, Miraak, is in league with a deadric lord (evil gods that play in the affairs of mortals) whose plane of oblivion (the land of the deadra) the player can explore also. Also, if you get this game on PC, you have a slew of free content created by players like me and you provided through the Steam Workshop. There is also a site called nexusmods.com where there are even more and typically higher quality, though this site requires a paid membership to download anything over 2Mb, so use at your own discretion. Steam also allows a free download of the creation kit, a tool you can use to make your own mods and is the same tool the developers used to make the game itself. So, my recommendation is the get this game (come on just do it already, you know you want to) and reserve a lot of your time for it because you are up for one hell of a ride. ... show more

  • A Landmark in genre
Platform For Display: PC Edition: Legendary
Probably one of the best games of the last few years, a landmark in the genre. Now you may ask, is this game perfect? is it so awesome that you can't stop playing? what is so special about this game? Well it is pretty simple, no the game is not perfect, in fact it is full of bugs, it is indeed awesome, but you can and will get tired of it, you will also stare at the screen asking yourself "what the hell just happened, why did i die?" the amazing thing about this game is its imperfection, strangely enough its what makes the game shine. The game is huge and random its impossible to predict everything so it has a lot of bugs, those bugs have been ironed through a series of updates, and with community updates (we will address the community later in the review) the story is not really its forte but it is ok for an RPG, since this game gives you so much freedom it is normal that the narrative suffers a bit, it could have been a lot better, but you would completely loose the freedom feeling you have while playing, the sound in the game is good but a bit repetitive, the music is really good but again repetitive, as for the graphics, well it really depends on what computer you play it in, but seeing this game is from 2011 the graphics do not shine, and it uses directx9 which by that time was already outdated but if you have a powerful rig the graphics look good even for a 2011 game and with community support you will see stuff that can be compared to nowadays games, as for the game length around 80 hours? the main quest is not enormous but the game with the dlc and the sidequests and all the exploring is at least 80 hours, now for the last and most important feature of the game community support and mod-ability, this is where it shines, the graphics look outdated? apply an ENB created by the community and make it look awesome, finished the game? download more quest mods, want to play with other races? download them, want a house for your hero? download it, do you want to turn skyrim harsh and cold climate into a tropical island? you can do that as well! the options are endless and only the imagination is the limit, should you buy this game? • The best game I have ever played
Platform For Display: PC Edition: Legendary
Transferring from Xbox360 skyrim to maxed out HD texture pack skyrim on the PC is a mega change. The graphics are beautiful!!! The Xbox 360 graphics look garbage when compared to PC. Maybe I enjoy it so much because I'm so familiar with it. Once you get into, you won't be able to stop. DLCS: I gotta be honest. I have only played 2 out of 3 DLCS. I have so many quests to do that I haven't gotten around to playing the DragonBorn quests. From what I read of it, it looks awesome. So, for the other DLCS! Hearth fire: Amazing DLC!!! Some people may say it is poor, but I like it. I love the fact that you can build your own house, get married, or have kids. I had a "problem" with my wife so I downloaded a divorce mod. (That problem is my wife Senna. I got rid of her priest robes and gave her some other clothes. Now whenever I load into my house, she's in her underwear! Lol) I like it, and for the price it's a steal. Dawnguard: Now I haven't played much of this one either, but I joined up with the Dawnguard because I absolutely hate vampires. The quests are fairly easy, just don't get the vampire virus. (Sanguine virus or something like that) It's pretty fun. Update: I have finished he Dawnguard expansion pack. I have my game modded and I found everything from this expansion easy. I had no troubles beating the quests. The loot you acquire from this is mediocre. So I just gave it to my follower. There are several side quests for this that I haven't gotten around to, but I'm sure they're fun. DragonBorn: DragonBorn DLC is a pretty neat experience. You get to travel to soletheim, a land that originally belonged to Morrowdor. I just recently finished he main quests, and agin I found it pretty boring. It's a lot more exciting if you don't have op stuff. Conclusion: Get it. For twenty bucks, it's a deal!! I'll update if something is wrong with the game. ... show more

  • Too much hype for more of the same
Platform For Display: PC Edition: Legendary
I'm surprised at how bad this game is. I have been playing TES since Morrowind and I own every game in the series, but I really expected more. Skyrim is just a reskinned Oblivion. The textures look god-awful, even in 1900x1200. I honestly think that Oblivion with mods looks better than Skyrim, even with the HD(2k) texture pack. I know that modding these games is a full time job but I did that with Oblivion and I shouldn't have to mod a modern game to make it decent. When I heard that Zenimax(Bethesda's parent) bought Id I thought that they would get more ideas to improve TES engines but I guess that's not how these things work. Interesting note: (Well it was to me) Don't be fooled by the case and disc, there is no physical PC version of this game. Once you activate it on Steam you can't give or sell it to anyone else, because it only has one key and that will be permanently linked to your Steam account. The only reason to get the disc version of this game is if you have a very slow internet connection and you just want the files handy. I haven't tried it but I'm fairly sure you should be able to activate a Steam game over dial-up. The more you know* ... show more
