  • Ugh
I really tried to love it. (Spoilers...) First. You have on the cover of the book that Thayer is 32. But the author starts off with him being thirty. Then he's 31 going on 32. Second. There is absolutely no spice in this book. Ignore your tik-tok reviews because there is none. The scenes, if you want to call them that, are maybe a few lines before they're done. I don't think any sexual scene lasted more than a page and there were no details that were worth it. This wouldn't bother me normally but with previous reviews of people calling it spicy I want to point out that it is not. Third. She is immature and the age gap wouldn't be an issue if the author was not constantly pointing out the difference. She is a little kid the entire time. She cheats on Caleb and then just jumps right in with Thayer. See below for sneak peak of second book where she is disgustingly selfish. Fourth. I do not understand the reason for killing off the son. You could have made Thayer single and I think I would have appreciated the book more. She abandoned Thayer when he needed her. He was there for her when her mom was going through cancer and through her nightmares bringing up her past. The minute it gets hard for her and she has to fight for Thayer she just up and leaves. She barely tried. Sneak Peak to second book: She leaves Thayer pregnant. Doesn't tell him for six years. Marries Caleb then divorces him. Caleb and Thayer are amazing. She is a terrible person and does not deserve them at all. I get she had a bad past but that does not condone all the shitty stuff she did and did not do during the tough times. Thayer forgives everything without ever getting upset. Caleb moves in next door to them and they're one big happy family. I honestly do not know where the author was going with this book and with Salem's character. She is a terrible immature person and she just barely has any growth. I hate that all the people she surrounded herself with just easily forgave her and just kept saying things like oh the past is the past and you can't change it. Why didn't anyone tell her what she did was wrong? Ugh I just can't.... ... show more

  • Brilliant and Beautiful while also heartbreaking - I am looking forward to #2 to restore my soul
Micalea Smeltzer has touched on so many emotional triggers not to mention some taboo tropes and tops it off at the end with a surprise twist that will devastate your heart and soul. One thing I do know is that I don't believe Micalea intends to leave us in this sad state. Part two of this duet is do out the following month. As she uses Wildflowers in her titles, I know that she will return us to the beauty of romance and enduring love. In part one you find eighteen year old Salem on the cusp of her life. Recent high school graduate with all the choices/paths in front of her. Unlike most her age, she is content to spend her days in the town she grew up in. This summer brings something new and wonderful to her life - a new neighbor. His name is Thayer and he is a grumpy landscaper. He is also a dad of an adorable little boy and he is thirteen years Salem's senior. As we all know, no matter what the brain tries to reason, the heart has a mind of it's own. Salem is drawn to Thayer despite the age difference and that he is also her "boss" when she agrees to watch his son for him. As I mentioned in my opening, there is quite a bit of angst in this story of awakenings. Despite all the tears, this story is going to grab you and hold you, tying it to your heart. I will be sitting here, rocking and sobbing for the concluding half of the duet that is coming soon. Come read along with me and we will hold each other up. ... show more

  • Feeling a wee bit torn...
It's been a bit since I finished this book, and I'm still unsure as to how to rate it. For the first 85%, this would have been at least 4.5-starred read for me. I liked the angst and while there is cheating--Salem is in a committed relationship with Caleb when she starts to become infatuated with Thayer--that isn't a hard limit for me. I was intrigued by the age gap--she's 18, he's 32--and the whole single parent and grump guy next door thing is my jam. But then in the last 15% or so, it felt like there was a mad rush to pile on one thing after another, with the main characters becoming tragic figures in their own seemingly doomed romance. I love angst in my romances, but this was too much in such a short period of time. That being said, the cliffhanger ending still piqued my curiosity, so I shall be checking out the second book when it comes out. So, taking all things into consideration, I'm giving The Confidence of Wildflowers 3.5 stars. ... show more
