Peter Ash, Lewis, and June, find themselves in a possible multiple shooter event in downtown Minneapolis. The situation is eventually resolved, but it was not what it appeared to be at first. What follows is a fascinating story about stolen government technology, stolen private technology, and the various players. Again, Nick Petrie is so good at this type of story. Not only does he pay close attention to the geographical details, but also the characters, their personalities and quirks, and to the development of the story. Because this is a complex story, a tapestry of events, causes, outcomes, and the resulting ramifications, that is was a difficult story to weave. Against that backdrop, we have the main characters and their interpersonal relationships that also shape the story. For example, can June be together with Peter Ash, with his PTSD, and how it manifests itself, for the long term? How about Lewis? Will his checkered past catch up to him and cause him to end up in prison, instead of with his wife and kids. And the new characters in this book, Edgar, the enigmatic serial killer with a big smile on his face, who loves his work as a contract killer. Or Spark, the genius loner girl who managed to invent a carbon based battery that is far better than a lithium battery only to have her invention stolen from her? How will all these things be resolved? That is the genius of Nick Petrie. Book Review - The Breaker - Nick Petrie In author Nick Petrie’s Peter Ash book, “The Breaker”, number six in the series, what seems simple and predictable turns complex and surprising in this thriller. The swiftly paced, action-dominated plot rushes headlong from its outset and the well developed characters makes the story all too difficult to stop reading. The Breaker is exciting, thrilling, and technology impressive. It took me a couple of chapters to warm up to the plot, but once I did, I read it obsessively to the very end! The story had some excellent mix of characters, some future technological elements, and some dashes of spy craft intelligence gathering. I also enjoyed the amusing one-liners, and of course the solid writing by Nick Petrie. He provided some great detail work in his storytelling with a broad array of components - from technical aspects of guns and vehicles to creating distinctive perspectives about locations and action scenarios. Petrie wove a thriller narrative with sufficient suspense and thrill while packing in the kind of action that keeps the reader turning pages. The military jargon, dark humor and language may not be for some readers, but it strikes an authentic cord for those who have served in the military. I took delight in this exhilarating and dramatic thriller but I especially relished the friendship between Peter Ash and his good friend Lewis. My first book review in a year. The book is that good. The story carries it, and the characters, and the writing, plus the practical lessons. Three cheers and five stars for Nick Petrie. I have enjoyed all of the Nick Petrie books. I have read so far the adventures that Peter Ash gets into and the amount of detail Petri provides keeps being engrossed in reading every time.

    • Love this Series, But...

I enjoy Peter Ash, June, and Lewis so much! This book was easy and enjoyable to read. I just have one negative thing, which I will leave far below with a spoiler alert. ***SPOILER ALERT*** REALLY, don't read further if you haven't read the book. But, what in the "wrapped up too quick" endings is this? It was like a chapter at the end was accidentally left out. What happened to Spark and the killer robots? Is humanity in Ash's world about to be destroyed? Seriously, what happened with that? ... show more

A techno - thriller heavy on the techno. Not my preferred choice of reading. I've been a fan of the Peter Ash books since the first one. However, I wasn't a fan of this particular book. There's plenty of action in this story, but a lot of it was over the top. Think sci-fi movie type action and you have a good idea of what I'm talking about. It was weird to see Peter and Lewis in that world and they seemed weirded out by it, too. In the author's notes at the end of the book, Petrie talks about liking Tom Swift books when he was younger. That's interesting because as I was reading "The Breaker" I was thinking it felt like a Hardy Boys meets Nancy Drew book. Peter and Lewis are the Hardys, June is a very foul-mouthed Nancy Drew (can we tone down her profanity laced dialogue a bit?) and the villain is straight out of a Tom Swift story. The bad news is that the writing was on par with those books, too. There was even a pseudo 'Gray Man' from the Hardy Boys Case Files in the form of the mysterious 'Oliver.' I got the impression that this Oliver will show up in future books and have cases/problems for Peter and Lewis (and June) to solve. On a side note, if you removed all the profanity (everyone swears and I do mean EVERYONE) the book would be shorter by 40 pages or more. Will I order the next book when it comes out? Probably. I want to see what direction Petrie decides to take Peter, Lewis, and June. This book did show Ash has made progress with his PTSD and his relationship with June seems to have moved to the next level. ... show more
