Description

"Nonstop action at a machine gun pace. If you aren't reading Nick Petrie, now is the time to start."--C.J. Box Peter Ash tangles with dangerous enemies and terrifying technology in the newest thriller from bestselling author Nick Petrie. A man wanted by two governments, Peter Ash has found a simple, low- profile life in Milwaukee, living with his girlfriend June and renovating old buildings with his friend Lewis. Staying out of trouble is the key to preserving this fragile peace . . . but when Peter spots a suspicious armed man walking into a crowded market, he knows he can't stand by and do nothing. Peter does interrupt a crime, but it wasn't at all what he'd expected. The young gunman appeared to have one target and one mission--but when he escapes, and his victim vanishes before police arrive, it seems there is more to the encounter than meets the eye. Peter's hunch is proven correct when a powerful associate from his past appears with an interest in the crime, and an irresistible offer: if he and June solve this mystery, Peter's record will be scrubbed clean. While Peter and Lewis trace the gunman, reporter June digs into the victim of the incident, a man whose face rings a bell in her memory. As their parallel investigations draw together, they're thrust into the path of a ruthless tech thief, an eerily cheerful assassin, a brilliant and troubled inventor, and a revolutionary technology that could wreak devastation in the wrong hands. But for Peter, even more is at stake: this investigation is his only path to a life free from the threat of prosecution or prison. Before the end, he'll have to fight harder than ever before to ensure that freedom doesn't come at too high a cost. . . . Read more

  • If this is the future,
It is beyond truly terrifying. It is always amazing how rough life can be for brilliant souls. Looking at what happened to Spark. Yet she survived - no more than survived. Life will be good for her and in turn good for humanity.

  • I took delight in this exhilarating and dramatic thriller...
Book Review - In author Nick Petrie’s Peter Ash book, “The Breaker”, number six in the series, what seems simple and predictable turns complex and surprising in this thriller. The swiftly paced, action-dominated plot rushes headlong from its outset and the well developed characters makes the story all too difficult to stop reading. The Breaker is exciting, thrilling, and technology impressive. It took me a couple of chapters to warm up to the plot, but once I did, I read it obsessively to the very end! The story had some excellent mix of characters, some future technological elements, and some dashes of spy craft intelligence gathering. I also enjoyed the amusing one-liners, and of course the solid writing by Nick Petrie. He provided some great detail work in his storytelling with a broad array of components - from technical aspects of guns and vehicles to creating distinctive perspectives about locations and action scenarios. Petrie wove a thriller narrative with sufficient suspense and thrill while packing in the kind of action that keeps the reader turning pages. The military jargon, dark humor and language may not be for some readers, but it strikes an authentic cord for those who have served in the military. I took delight in this exhilarating and dramatic thriller but I especially relished the friendship between Peter Ash and his good friend Lewis. Their brotherly relationship and closeness is one to be admired. A good read that is well worth the time… ... show more

  • Continues a really good series
Don’t start with this book, go back to the start of the series and work your way here, it’s a worthwhile series. Peter Ashe is often compared to Jack Reacher, but in a way he’s more human because he’s more fallable, and I like that a lot. These books are never going to win the same awards as the one’s my wife and her book club read, and I am just fine with that. It’s just good old fashioned, no nonsense escapism. ... show more

  • Another Winner!
This is the sixth Peter Ash novel, and it is most certainly NOT getting old. It starts a bit slowly, but soon turns into something that kept me reading and putting off things that I needed to do. This author has a way of showing his readers new energy and technology developments that otherwise would never be on their radar. I was totally sucked into a rudimentary understanding of some things that never before interested me. Then I was horrified to consider what some of these things could mean to me personally and to the world. In addition, the adroit character development over the previous entries in the series helped to make it all very real to characters I have come to love and care about. How does Peter Ash get himself into these dilemmas? It all flows smoothly from the skilled mind of author Nick Petrie, who leads us to a denouement that had me on the edge of my seat and rapidly turning the pages. Bravo! As soon as I finish this short review I will be looking for the next in this brilliant series. ... show more

  • Great story, right out of our headlines.
Peter Ash, Lewis, and June, find themselves in a possible multiple shooter event in downtown Minneapolis. The situation is eventually resolved, but it was not what it appeared to be at first. What follows is a fascinating story about stolen government technology, stolen private technology, and the various players. Again, Nick Petrie is so good at this type of story. Not only does he pay close attention to the geographical details, but also the characters, their personalities and quirks, and to the development of the story. Because this is a complex story, a tapestry of events, causes, outcomes, and the resulting ramifications, that is was a difficult story to weave. Against that backdrop, we have the main characters and their interpersonal relationships that also shape the story. For example, can June be together with Peter Ash, with his PTSD, and how it manifests itself, for the long term? How about Lewis? Will his checkered past catch up to him and cause him to end up in prison, instead of with his wife and kids. And the new characters in this book, Edgar, the enigmatic serial killer with a big smile on his face, who loves his work as a contract killer. Or Spark, the genius loner girl who managed to invent a carbon based battery that is far better than a lithium battery only to have her invention stolen from her? How will all these things be resolved? That is the genius of Nick Petrie. He pulls it all together in a seamless ending that was fun, somewhat horrifying in parts, and yet, ultimately satisfying. ... show more
