  • Who is the Audience?
This setting of this story is an assisted living facility. The main characters are residents who are still active in both mind and body. However, a number of their friends/spouses are failing. When I first began the book, I thought the setting was unique and interesting as I had never read addressing the realities of assisted living/aging in such a focused manner. However as the book progresses the author also introduces spouses and friends of the main characters who are not active in mind and in body. I found the book a bit depressing due to this. I wondered who the writer targeted as their audience. I doubt a younger person would find these older characters interesting. On the other hand, older readers might find the setting and the challenges of the older characters mirroring their own lives. They may be wrestling to make the decision to place their parents in assisted living or thinking they themselves are almost ready to move on to assisted living. The characters are well developed. The twists are clever. And the ending was, to me satisfying. ... show more

  • Almost missed this one
This is not the type of book I usually read. But when a critic wrote a review and described it as "one I could not put down"...decided to give it a go. And I am so glad I did. I met the 4 sleuths in this book for the first time, and I feel I have known them for life. Lovely, funny, endearing characters that made the most discouraging days bearable come nighttime with a good murder mystery read. With a father who is 92 in a nursing home, it was all too real for me. So I laughed, I cried, and I can only hope that dad's day today was filled with the same kind of friends that Joyce wrote so lovingly about. And that he, in turn, will give back the same kind of love and friendship that she was so blessed to enjoy. Well done, Mr. Osman...well done. ... show more

  • Very Interesting Book
The characters in this book are most interesting and are well explained by Joyce in her diary which she shares with the reader. This is an excellent way to keep the reader enjoying the book which is a bit complicated at times. I truly enjoyed the book and look forward to Book 2!

  • I liked it
It was interesting in that as I started to read this book, I did not especially like it. I thought I'd finish it only bc I started it-I found that some of the english descriptions a little confusing, or they'd mention a product (like a brand of crackers) by name, as in::: "Oh let's grab a Kasky & have a chat"--and I'm thinking...grab a what? BUT in the end I really really enjoyed all the characters. I enjoyed the plot. I found it very plausible. I became so involved with the characters that I actually went back to re read the 1st 2 chapters to get a better grasp on some of the ones I glossed over bc I was focusing on the terminology. lol I am ordering the next book in sequence! I loved it and want to know what this crew of old timers is getting up to next. ... show more

  • If you live in a retirement home
I thought this was the funniest book ever especially because I live in a retirement community. It’s so similar. The relationships, the conversations - the only difference is we have not had a murder yet. Suggest you have a piece of paper and a pen near by to write down the names of the characters because there are a lot of them. Can’t wait to read the second book! ... show more

  • A lovely book
Full disclosure: I began this book, absolutely hated the beginning, set it aside for months, and read many others. But I kept thinking about the glowing reviews and today gave it another go--and didn't stop until I'd finished it. I still dislike the beginning, but once there was a murder, the story flowed nicely and there were enough red herrings to open a fish shop. There were also enough pertinent observations about aging and dying for an entire Chicken Soup for Old Farts. I would say it's a cozy mystery because there is no gore, but the mystery (mysteries) and the characters are engaging and I was sad all of them didn't make it to the end. If you can get past the beginning, I do think you'll enjoy this book. ... show more

  • Fun and interesting read(s)
At first I wasn’t sure I’d finish the book as I found one of the characters to be very annoying. I persevered and I’m glad I did. In the end the clever mix of such wildly different people and personalities is a delight. I have subsequently bought and read all the books. I find the mysterious adventures more intriguing than the usual fare because they are tackled by an entire group of sleuths, and the number of members in the Thursday Murder Club grows with each book. These books are clever, funny, and immensely entertaining. ... show more

  • Wildly entertaining journey of friendship
Just delightful, a droll comedy of murder in an English village-type setting that will delight fans of Midsommer Murders. As Inspector Barnaby would say, "Scratch the surface of any of these little villages, and you'll find all kinds of secrets." There are secrets aplenty in this upscale retirement community and its surroundings, and plans to raze an old convent's cemetery trigger all kinds of consequences, including murder. This delights the Thursday Murder Club, a group of four residents who've been meeting to discuss and try to solve cold cases left by another resident, a former DI. Now the 70+ year-olds have fresh murders to unravel. What follows is a lively, wildly entertaining journey of friendship and solidarity among folks who might otherwise not become such a tight-knit group. Some might view them as doddering old folk, but they quickly prove they can do almost anything once they pool their collective skills and connections, even roping in the cooperation of adult children and two local coppers. Prepare to smile, laugh out loud, and share with your significant other the various shenanigans they employ as the very convoluted mystery unfolds. You won't be disappointed. ... show more
