  • Fan of Justified
Everyone hails Elmore Leonard as a “master of dialogue” and I can see why. It took me a minute to get used to his rapid-fire conversation, often written in colloquial Harlan speak without dialogue tags, but once I did, I appreciated the author’s efficiency of words. Raylan reads like a script, fast-moving and action-packed. It was an easy read and I found it entertaining in the way I find John Locke’s books entertaining. A little outlandish, often comical, and nothing you have to think too much about. The author moves from organ theft to lady bank robbers to the tale of Jackie Nevada with some back and forth between the mines and the mining company and a sprinkling of major players, inside Harlan County and out. It’s a lot to take in, and I’m not sure what I’d say the plot was in a book that has at least five or six, most of which ended up with someone being shot. But it was fun. A nice break for me from mysteries and thriller and horror, my usual genres, and a treat since I did love Justified. Picking up a series at book three can be tricky, but this one went on sale and I bought it for “someday.” I probably missed a bit, but as a fan of the show I didn’t miss much. I knew the characters and was pleased to see the favorites (Boyd, Dickie, and Winona among them) make their appearances. Overall, I had a good time reading Raylan and I would read the rest of the series as the occasional palate cleanser. Recommended. ... show more

  • If you've seen the JUSTIFIED Television Series, You Kind of Know How This Goes - Almost
To be honest, reading this book was like looking at a first draft of the Second and Third seasons of the JUSTIFIED television series - because that's basically what it was. Elmore Leonard, pleasantly surprised at how faithful to the spirit of his "Deputy US Marshall Raylan Givens" stories the first season of JUSTIFIED was (he had a few quibbles, like how attached to his Stetson Timothy Olyphant's Raylan was), wrote what feels like a quick series of short stories linked together into a novel. So if you watched the show? You mostly know how the stories go - except some of the more memorable characters in the television show, like Mags Bennett, don't exist in the book. On the other hand, it's Elmore Leonard getting as close as he ever got to actually guiding the popular television series based on one of his characters - and it's worth reading for Leonard's gift for language and character, and how he saw JUSTIFIED going. If you're a fan of the show, you won't think buying the book is a waste of money or time.... ... show more

  • This is a fun book which is very reminiscent of the TV series
This book was a lot of fun, it has what is basically three short stories woven together by cases being investigated by Raylan. I love the TV series Justified and this book is just like an episode from the show. The narrator of the audio book is very good, he is able to differentiate each character by his voice and adequately convey their tone and emotions. If you liked the series you will like this book, if you did not then give this a miss. This novel is filled with eccentric and quirky characters and lots of unexpected twists to the story. This is a great suspense thriller and I recommend it as a an entertaining read. ... show more

  • This book was something of a misfire
I enjoyed the television series and was looking forward to a continuation of some excellent writing but this book fell short in each of the stories. The situations at times were believable but most of the events seem to contrived and the characters were poorly developed. Unfortunately, it read is if the author was working against a timeline. The bottom line is that the book fell far short of expectations and I cannot recommend it to anyone even if they’ve seen the tv series or not. ... show more

  • Elmore and Raylan: an excellent ride.
After I finished the Justify series, I discovered this book and, almost as an afterthought, I started reading it. It was strange and delicious at the same time; the characters were all there, but they were all just a tad different. At first it bothered me, but after a while I grew to like it. I started reading the kindle book, and then set it down. On a trip to Alaska, I began reading it again and was hooked. I hadn't read Elmore Leonard for years, but pretty soon I discovered how much I enjoyed his writing. It has a kind of rhythm, Elmore's writing has, and once you ride it, it's a good ride, like your first wave, or the first time you drive a car really well. I'm looking forward to reading all his Raylan novels. If they're as good as this one, I'll be riding Elmore's wave once again. ... show more

  • Raylan Givens - Need I Say More?
I absolutely love the series Justified; and was so happy to find out that a lot of this book was taken for some of season 3 by the producers. What a great collaborative effort. I respect everyone involved for respecting Mr. Leonard by staying true to his characters and style. Mr. Leonard wtrites with such a compact, modern style that really gives you the gritty feel of each scene happening in real time. While I appreciate all good writings for detectives and lawmen throughout the years, I appreciate that there is no over-exposition. Raylan Givens is not Sherlock Holmes; he doesn't have the time the analyze every situation; he has to react. And you have that feel here, with split-second decision-making, which makes it so believable. Great read; I enjoy all Mr. Leaonard's 'Raylan' books; and, Justified is my favorite show. I will be sad after next year's final season (season 6); but, I appreciate and respect that they will be wrapping everything up and going out on top. No open ended series finale (hopefully); they have promised an end. So, at least I will have the books and the dvd's to keep Raylan, Boyd and Mr. Leonard alive... ... show more
