Description

Explore lessons in physics and mechanical engineering with the sweetest pinball machine ever! Build your own customizable pinball machine that uses edible gumballs as the pinballs. Learn about force, motion, collisions, gravity, simple machines, and more as the gumballs bounce off bumpers, slingshot around spinners, ring bells, slide down tracks, and whiz around the obstacle course you create. The targets and accessories can be quickly repositioned into countless configurations, making it easy to test and refine your designs. The pinball machine’s spring-powered launcher and responsive flippers work like their real-life counterparts, propelling the gumball pinballs up, down, and all around! A central ramp rotates to direct the projectiles into three elevated playing areas and ultimately down the winning ramp, where the gumball can be claimed as a sweet prize. Did you miss your mark? Don’t worry! When gumballs fall out of play, a cool mechanism called an Archimedes screw stores them and moves them back toward the launcher again for a new game.

  • Super fun!
We got this for my 8 year old and he loves it! We discovered that the balls from a Hungry Hungry Hippo Game work also if you eat all of the gum balls. 10/10 recommend

  • Best to use other balls
The gumballs for pinballs idea is fun on paper, and the kids love to eat them, but using them as pinballs isn't the best. Color comes off, they can leave the game sticky (especially if it is humid or they are handled with damp hands), and they are kind of gross to eat after using them in the game a lot. It's probably best to grab some alternate heavy plastic ones (14-15mm should work) for use in the game and just let the kids eat the ones it comes with. It's a cool concept, and fun to experiment with, but nothing is overly durable and it will wear out. • Súper fun!
I ordered this for my 8 years old son and he loved it. Easy to assembly and it was fun to do it and then to play with it. The little balls didn’t last too much!! It was like an hour of building and playing. He said it was super fun.

  • Flimsy
This takes a few hours to assemble based on the limited instructions. Then you have a toy that may last after a couple uses by children. Not a good value. Don’t recommend purchasing.

  • Lots of fun for husband and kids!
My husband really enjoys tinkering on just about anything that’s needs to be put together which is how I came to order the Thames and Kosmos pinball machine maker. We have young girls and he enjoys when he can share his love of tinkering with them on things they find engaging. Although it’s a bit beneath him I thought it would be a good rain day with the kids activity. That was a great call on my part and they had a really fun afternoon putting this together and more time after that learning to use it. Fun, educational, and great for family time. Just order and enjoy. ... show more

  • Neat Idea, Needs Work
The instructions for this are very detailed, and they give some ideas for different ways to change up the pinball machine. The only issues I had, were with the orientation of snapping the A8 and A7 bits into the 2x P9 bits. I reversed where they went, and had to undo it. Unfortunatley, while this kit is clever, it's only as good as the foundation parts, and they don't work very well. The two back-board portions that have the gumballs roll down ramps, constantly stop the gumballs in the catch. They don't connect to the ramps well at all, there's a ledge that catches the ball. A lot of the plastic bits that are apparently intended to flip or drop when touched by the ball, don't, and simply stop the ball instead. The balls get stuck on the components frequently. Many of the parts can be moved around and re-arranged, and you certainly learn a lot about pinballs, and how hard they must be to set up to not be traps for the ball. I thought the use of gumballs was clever, until we started using them. The candy coating on the balls rubs off and smears the game, and gets things sticky. I wish we just had some plastic balls instead. Overall, it's a neat idea, but the execution needs work. The price seems fair for the quality... unfortunately, I'd rather pay a bit more for higher quality. Made in China. ... show more

  • STEM DIY pinball machine - gaming that helps them learn
Self-assembley pinball machine with lots of swappable parts is a 2 in 1 game. Buildability - geared for tweens and older as there are many parts. Any child interested in physics and science experiments will love the option to build it different ways to test their theories on how the gumball will react. Playability - Reasonably sturdy for what it is. Rubber bands are replaceable & gumballs can be purchased by the jar. Additionally, other small round objects like marbles can be substituted in order to continue the experiment even further. This seems like a toy children will come back to again and again...and even one younger siblings can play with once it's built. Makes a great gift even for kids whose parents say, "Don't get them anything - they have too much already" because it's STEM-based learning. What parent can say no to that? ... show more

  • Fun science project, but set aside some gumballs if you want to eat them
This Thames & Kosmos Pinball Machine Maker was a fun, fairly short project to do with my 10-year-old son. Keep in mind that this has a lot of small parts, and some parts come attached to plastic. You either need a diagonal cutter or scissors and then file them down with a nail file. So, it does require a little adult help. I like that it offers some different experiments to do once it is built. Like many others have mentioned, I wish this came with a different type of ball. I get that they wanted something lightweight, but kids are going to want to eat the gumballs. They are edible, but this isn't a gumball machine and is exposed to air. My son is old enough to understand not to eat the ones that have been played with, but he did still eat some out of the bag while we were setting it up. You can refill the machine with standard machine-size, 16-mm (5/8-inch) gumballs. I thought about trying marbles, but they might be a little too heavy. ... show more
