It's nice because it's something a 6 year old could do herself with minimal adult intervention. The description in the detail states “kids will be thrilled”. My grandson was thrilled and super excited when “digging” into this kit. While some of the birthstones are tiny he still enjoyed seeing how different they looked when held up to the daylight which showed more detail and also when using the magnifying glass. An added bonus for him was the display bottle. We look forward to purchasing another style.

Fun activity for kids. 9 year old enjoyed it and kept busy for about 30-40 mins. Best to do outside as it can get a bit messy with the digging. We kept a cup of water nearby to wash off the gems. Gems are very small but it was still cool to find them and compare with the booklet.
