We got this for a gift for our son’s 7th bday and he LOVED it! He got right into it and it kept him busy for a good hour or so. Every rock/gem he found was welcomed by a burst of excitement! It can get pretty messy so it’s a good outdoor project. I wouldn’t recommend it for kids under 4. The rocks can be kinda small and might need extra help from an adult or older kid. He did the shark tooth kit around Christmas time and he loved that as well. Super fun and recommend it to a friend. ... show more

My 7-year-old son loved this kit! It took him about two hours to finish, and he was completely enthralled the entire time. I did have to wet the clay a little to make it easier to dig through, and I definitely recommend having a container or tray ready because it gets pretty messy. Each time he uncovered a gem, we’d stop to look it up in the little guidebook that came with the kit, which made it even more fun and educational. I paid $19.99, but after seeing that the 50-stone kit is only $23.99, I feel like this one should be priced closer to $15.99. That’s really my only complaint and the reason for giving 4 stars instead of 5. Otherwise, it’s a fantastic hands-on activity for kids who love digging and discovering. ... show more

This Mega Gemstone Dig Kit was awesome. My 5 year old Grandson is really into rocks. This was the hit of his Christmas gifts. The kit comes with this brick-like gray block that you had to add a small amount of water to. Then he kept using the little chisel they provide to keep digging into this brick and it starts to fall apart very slowly. He was so thrilled when he found those gemstones. He’s been carrying them around since Christmas in a little wooden box. This was by far , well worth the cost. Kudos to National Geographic for a wonderful product. During this quarantine I have been looking for activities for my soon to be 4 year old girl. She loves rocks so I decided for a rainy day this would be a great activity and many people seemed to like this rock kit over others. We did this rock kit today and we both absolutely loved it!!! We got a total of 16 rocks when the box says up to 15....so a plus! My daughter was so fascinated and needed some help but not a lot. I actually liked it and was so into it I didn't need to look at my phone at all! (I'm trying to focus more on her and not my phone). She loved studying each rock and would ask to see where it was in the book. She would also tell me if she thought I was wrong with which picture I chose. The book has a short excerpt to describe each gem/rock and comes in many languages. There also is a short set of directions at the beginning of the book to assist you with how to best dig. The kit comes with a digging tool, magnifying glass and brush. I used an Allen key wrench for myself since my daughter had the tools. I also kept a cup of water on the side so we could add to the dirt when needed. I am really considering buying this again because she was so intrigued and excited. It was a very nice activity to do together. I would highly recommend it. This will take a good 3 hours.....maybe 4 if it is kids only doing it. Nice chunk of no TV time during this quarantine. ... show more
