  • Despite poor instructions, excellent beginner set
I want to talk about what this kit got wrong first: 1. The instructions are horrible. This is clearly a student/amateur microscope, meaning that anyone buying this kit or receiving it as a gift should be given clear directions. They made a feeble attempt to look like they did their due diligence by including one color picture with a few call-outs for different parts of the microscope, but when you turn the page to Operation Instruction, you’re told things like “…you should adjust the iris diaphragm of the condenser and different brightness of the light.”—If you aren’t familiar with microscope operation, you’ll have to do an Internet search for iris diaphragm, condenser, etc. because this guide never shows/explains them. Other sentences are just mangled translations, like “Don’t dismantle the instrument rashly besides the replaceable lest the correct position should be breached.” What???? I’m sorry, if you have an international company with addresses in Germany and the UK (as an entire half page of the instructions is dedicated to), surely somebody speaks English well enough to give things a once-over? It’s just lazy. 2. This is nitpicky, but since there are 3 boxes of slides and they all look the same, I wish they’d clearly labeled the ones that have empty slides vs. sample slides. It’s easy to take out the top box, see empty slides, and assume they’re all empty. Then you miss the bottom box that has prepared slides with feathers, wood, hair, etc.—if you’re getting this gift for a kid with a short attention span, make sure to point out that they can just fire up the microscope and start using it right away using the prepared slides! They did kind of phone it in on some of the slides, one of which is just a printed letter “A” and another is a dot of red paint. What about like, a bee mandible or something? I don’t know. 3. No enclosed guide/labels to explain what the parts in the kit ARE. If you don’t recognize the weird plastic doodad next to the power supply as a phone mount for clamping in your smartphone to take awesome pictures, you’ll seriously miss out!! Half the fun is taking pictures to record and share what you see. N.B. although it’s never explicitly stated, the included microscope lenses don’t seem to be immersion oil friendly (and none is included), so don’t get it if you need it for that. Okay, done with complaints! I wanted to mention a couple highlights they really nailed: 1. The zippered grey storage bag with handle is SO MUCH BETTER than the weak dust covers that come with most microscopes. There’s just no comparison—it’s much easier to store this way. If you legitimately have the table space to always have it out and will miss the dust cover, you might feel differently. For me, the zippered bag is much appreciated. 2. They even include the phone mount so you can take pictures with your smartphone. Not that it’s an expensive component, but normally it’s a separate part you have to buy. Having it included and easy to store in the bag is fantastic. Overall, it’s an excellent kit for beginners and has pretty much everything you need, although it’s severely lacking the kind of support and instruction that beginners require. If you’re getting it for a kid, be prepared to help them learn how to make adjustments and/or find some YouTube videos. ... show more

  • No directions
So, i really like that this uses dual power sources, 3-AA or plug in. Since we are new to microscopes, it took a little while for my 8YO son and i to figure it out but we did! And we’re smarter for it. Not that i always read directions but i like to at least have the option of having something to refer to. It’s a complete set that comes with different eye pieces of different magnifications….none of them padded like how i remember microscopes from my younger years. It comes with blank slides and comes with prefilled slides of misc items which is really nice. It has lights underneath and different color filters. This is really a complete set and i hope this will be used for years to come. ... show more

  • Lots of features for price point, reasonable optical quality up to 400x, nice carry case.
The media could not be loaded. This microscope has a collimated light on the bottom powered by an included wall adapter, a tinted filter wheel under the stage, as well as a top light that can be used for lower magnification levels. The stage has a clip on slide holder, with X and Y positioning knobs. The stage moves up and down with side adjustment knobs to focus. The focusing works well up to around 400x, but at higher magnification levels it is very "touchy" and very small turns of the dial are required. I found that you could also "adjust focus" at high magnifications by pushing down slightly on the stage adjustment knobs, to flex the stage up and down slightly. The rotating head has a 4x, 10x and 40x objective lens. Combined with the 10x eyepiece, this gives you 40x-100x-400x. Combined with the 25x eyepiece this gives you 100x, 250x and 1000x. If you add in the included 2x barlow lens, you can double any of the above magnification powers (typically only used to get 1000x up to 2000x). The optical performance is good in the 40-400x range, and you can see things in the 400-2000x range, but the quality goes down, and you start to see dirt and imperfections in the optics as the magnification goes up. If you are looking for a starter microscope, or a lot of microscopes for students to use, this is a good option, but at this price point you can't expect super optical quality at high magnifications. ... show more

  • So much better than expected.
The microscope is made of metal, in case you were wondering. It's built very well, but obviously not as good as more expensive, professional scopes. Still, the microscope was a very pleasant surprise. This microscope comes inside a very nice cloth case with a custom foam insert that holds the scope and all of the accessories! The accessories include three eyepieces, 2 plastic boxes with blank glass slides and another box with preloaded slides, and even a cellphone holder/adapter to take pics and videos through the microscope's eyepiece. All of the parts move very smoothly and the lights are great! Everything about this microscope is truly impressive for the price. Although it's not as heavy and solid as more expensive scopes, it's just as powerful as many of them, including ones that were available to me in college. So, while you may not be doing professional research with this microscope, it's still quite the capable scope and is a very solid starting point for anyone, child or adult. I recommend it! ... show more

  • Very good beginners kit for your kids
It is made very well and easy to operate. The extras are just good enough for younger ones to play around with. All in all this ia a great set up for your kids to play around with and learn. Great starting place for those interested.

  • Great for homeschooling
This was an addition to this year's science class, and it is a great addition. It comes with several specimens on slides already so it is useable right out of the box.
