  • First arrived in pieces. Second arrived with dots on the screen. Third is perfect!
Size: 50 in Style: TV
I ordered the 50" TCL 5 S535 model on Amazon after having read up on reviews on RTings, a website that reviews TVs and Monitors. The first 50" arrived in multiple pieces, with the metal foot having been smashed into the TV after the box had been significantly damaged and the foot had broken loose from the damaged packing material. (Picture one, the glowing blue nightmare.) Amazon was aces with the replacement, which shipped immediately and arrived in a much better treated box. However, the second one had several dots on the screen, roughly the size of a dime, which were noticeably darker than the rest of the panel. I returned this one for a refund. I ended up purchasing the 55" TCL 5 S535 version locally instead, so I could take it back same day and scream at people if need be. It is slightly bigger than I wanted, but still manageable. The picture quality is great on both models, as they have the exact same panel and internal electronics. It is excellent for video gaming, and the Roku streaming services are amazing. I mounted the TV to a VESA compatible PERLESMITH Universal TV Stand Table Top TV Base (B07XLMQ39D) as I dislike the metal feet and do not have a very wide entertainment console, this worked perfectly. I hooked a Mohu ReLeaf antenna to the TV and picked up ~35 local channels in rural Idaho, with several hundred free channels from the built in streaming services as well, all seamlessly integrated into the process. The device also hooked up to my Google Assistant enabled smart home, however the TV does NOT support Chromecasting, and will require a Google Chromecast at a later date. The Roku Remote Control is easy and intuitive, with the only criticism I have being that the remote has 4 buttons dedicated to streaming services that I do not use, and they cannot be remapped (swapping Disney+ for Amazon Prime Video, for example.) But this is not a huge deal. The big takeaway I would have with this experience is: 1. A non-zero number of these TVs are arriving in bad shape when they arrive. Open and test them immediately. 2. There is a "panel lottery" as the QA process on all TVs is not perfect. Even with the good 55", the 4 corners of the screen are slightly darker, but this is just a reality of this kind of display. 3. Amazon's return process was aces the entire time, although they will want photos handy; I suggest uploading them someplace like imgur or google photos or apple's icloud so they can be readily shared. ... show more

  • Great 4k TV & Excellent Price To Performance
Size: 50 in Style: TV
If you're trying to spend under 500$ and want a good size TV and 4k, then BUY THIS TV. -Buy this TV. Pros! Like seriously. I've never seen such a good Value, great colors, great panel, Good brightness, wonderful HDR and the ability to edit your inputs to your liking. The UI and remote is fast and responsive. The Home menu is well laid out and super easy to use. Nothing hangs up or lags, it's not super confusing or overly complicated when navigating the menu. It also switches over between inputs with ease. The back is pretty much flat for easy wall mount access and the ports are easy to access. -Cons My only problem is enabling HDR. By default it sets the HDMI ports to auto detect from HDMI 1.2 or HDMI 2.0. The problem is if you're like me and use your PC to play and watch content on it besides the smart TV function this can cause hang ups. I spent about an Hour kinda upset how HDR wasn't working on my PC but it was working fine on the smart apps. It turns out if you go under to the settings in the UI under the HDMI ports you can set it to force HDMI 2.0 manually. Then once you go into windows the display settings will show the enable HDR toggle. Why this doesn't pop up as a default setting with a warning is annoying and misleading. It should be able to detect that the device is HDR compatible or ask when a new input is detected what mode you want with the explanation between the two HDMI Versions. Because otherwise it's tucked in a menu that's no straight forward. Also no lights on the remote, I'm not a Cat I don't see in the dark so it's slightly annoying. ... show more

  • Great 65" TV, excellent value. Iffy sound.
The picture is incredible. Previously I had a 55" TCL/Roku TV, set a bit farther away, and I liked it. But I couldn't see the difference between HD and 4K. Well, add 10" and sit a few feet closer, and the difference is striking -- at first I almost got dizzy watching some moving scenes. I went ahead and paid the extra for 4k Netflix and am happy with that. The sound is what I would expect from a thin, light TV like this. Not a lot of bass, not a lot of midrange power & clarity. For the price of this TV you can add a good sound system and still be ahead pricewise. But currently we're watching it without added sound and it's good enough not to be annoying. It's surprising how light such a big TV is. I will be mounting it, and while I know I "should" have help, I probably will do it alone and won't worry. I'm in my 60's in (at best) half decent shape but I don't work out, so you don't need to be an athlete to pick this up. Small, slight people would have trouble. BTW we got this TV because we were very happy with the Roku TCL 55" we got 3 or 4 years ago but need to replace due to moving. The Roku app works fine. My wife says it's a little slow to start a new app; I haven't noticed that. If 5 or 10 years from now the internal Roku just can't handle it due to new software always needing more CPU horsepower or memory, I'll spend $30 and get a Roku stick. Meanwhile it's nice to have just one zapper to do everything. I knocked one star off of "remote" simply because the remote does not have a microphone. You can probably do that using the Roku app. The Roku app isn't the greatest, though; it can't handle certain things if your phone has lots of pictures. (I'd like to set up my photos for screensave mode and the app has that feature but it doesn't work because my phone has too many pictures.) But that's not TCL's fault. ... show more
