  • Great Li'l Unit! (Especially for a single user.)
Style: Natural Gas, 4.75 GPM, 111000BTU
[btw, jump to the very end if you're in a hurry. Just sayin'.] I bought this unit a while back, but didn't install it immediately, I got it to replace an older (cheaper) unit that was failing (but I unexpectedly got it to limp-along for about another year... which in retrospect was a waste of time/energy[as-in 'my energy', 'cause It also was very energy efficient]/money). I should've just started using this one, soon as I got it. However, when I eventually got around to unboxing this unit, I ~did~ run into an issue when trying to install it. The exhaust fitting was considerably of smaller diameter than the one I replaced. So, I (somewhat annoyed, not being able to locate anything standard at Lowes or Home Depot) had to finagle some exhaust adapters of my own *THEN* when I powered it up, It would just throw-a-code, and shut-down. <arrrg!> Checking the comments of other users, I saw this was common... but their main complaint was not getting a manual. Fortunately, I ~did~ get mine... which contained a... well, 'less-than-adequate' explanation of the code. But (being a retired engineer) I was able to figure it out! (But without the manual... well, let's not even think about that! So... if you don't have one... GET ONE!) Realizing that the problem was related to 'exhaust pressure' (and that I had finagled mine somewhat arbitrarily), I then knew to follow that track. So (after opening a claim with Amazon, that I ultimately gladly cancelled, and getting GREAT support from the company [at least to the extent of them being willing to take it back]... but I needed it! So...) I took the unit apart. Lo&behold... I was impressed! REALLY impressed! I honestly didn't expect a unit I got so inexpensively, to be that well designed! To try and make this already-likely-TMI review (I didn't intend to be this long) shorter, I'll try to cut to the chase: The problem/danger with gas-powered units, is their (improbable-but-possible) chance of burning inefficiently, thereby producing CO aka Carbon-Monoxide (btw contrary to what our corrupt-greedy-global-leaders/liars say, CO2 is good! VERY GOOD!!! [photosynthesis and lots-a other 'cool'<pun> stuff!!!] But CO is bad! VERY BAD!!!) that can leak out and kill your family. ~Probably~ not what you want to happen. This is especially a concern for high-efficiency devices, that may have trouble releasing exhaust-gasses which are hot enough to escape by their own thermal convection. BUT... this unit (like ones that cost several-hundreds more!) has 3 perks I was unaware of, back when I bought it: A. It contains a forced-air blower, to help clear the gasses. B. It has pressure sensors to insure unwanted gasses can get clear. And... C. it has (perhaps 'not-so-conversant') firmware, to make sure these safety measures are working, or it'll shut itself down. So... all-in-all... it's great. But I can see how others may have felt otherwise. Now... if you have it professionally-installed (as you should!) and the 'professionals' know their stuff (as 'they' should!)... everything should be good! So as I said initially, I've been using it for over a year now, and have not had a single problem with it (once I configured the exhaust properly). I expected to have to use two (for my 3bed/2bath) house, and may have to if I get company. But so far, living alone, it seems to be able to handle all my needs (...shower, kitchen, laundry, upstairs-bath) just fine on it's own (albeit a bit of understandable delay, getting hot water all the way up from my basement). So yeah! I'm really happy with the unit as well as with the very kind, highly-supportive company. My only... well, not so much a complaint, as a suggestion, is merely one of a cultural nature. Being a technical/scientific person, I'm more familiar with the metric system than most, I agree it's less-stupid... and I'm able to make the conversions in my head... still I'm a proud 'Merican at the end of the night! I want my bacon greasy, my ammo dry... and my temperatures expressed in Fahrenheit! Sadly, this baby doesn't do that. But honestly, it doesn't matter that much at least not once you get it set right! But it's great to be able to get in my shower, whenever... and not have to worry about unexpected scalding-burns (or worse... FROSTBITE!!!). So (if you don't already have an 'on-demand') Git-'er done. Order yours TONIGHT! Okay, here's the short version of the song: If you have any trouble at all getting this unit to work... your exhaust connection's probably wrong. ... show more

  • 9-months in and still happy with this heater
Style: Propane Gas, 4.75 GPM, 111000BTU
I struggle to understand why so many 1-star reviews. I suspect quite a few do not understand the working of these heaters. Controlling the inlet flow rate relative to the inlet water temperature is critical. To be fair to some of those reviewers, ours came with no User-Manual and several 1-star reviews mention that fact. But, a little self-education on the Internet would have quickly covered that before yelling "foul" and, would no doubt have made them happy customers too. That little tap-lever position on the inlet fitting is critical. The propane volume available controls how many BTUs can be pushed into the water. Given that the propane pressure is regulated down to around 1/2-PSI (Pounds per Square Inch) for domestic products such as BBQs and this water heater, throttling the incoming water flow is critical to success. The available BTUs are severely limited at that Propane pressure and volume so the only other option is to throttle back the inlet water volume based largely on it's temperature. Leaving that tap set at full-bore is passing water at a rate that would require 10-times the BTUs this is rated for and at way higher Propane pressure and volume. Some of this may fall back to the lack of User-manual, but before I bought, I contacted this vendor with questions and they were very responsive (same day) and knowledgeable. I had purchased 2 other brands prior to this one. One of which I returned for a refund (BTU claimed not attainable) and the other, (no inlet throttling tap) the vendor refused to accept the UPS delivery back despite their RMA etc. This vendor (XFMOTO) was able to assure me (with calculations) of the actual BTUs possible and they matched their web-page claims. I know this is sounding like I am a shill for the company but nothing could farther from the truth. I rarely give 5-stars for anything, but this heater, based on my experience deserves them. It delivers the stated BTUs which can be checked by simple calculations on temperature-rise and Propane used. As to reliability and longevity, the Jury is still out on that after only 9-months, but so far we have zero complaints. It is a great little heater. We have the outlet temp set to 38C (a small gripe there, 100F would have been nice) so we do not need to add cold water at the shower. Love it. Rest assured, if we do have an issue, I will be back here with an Update and grabbing stars back. :) ... show more

  • Failure to ignite
Style: Propane Gas, 4.75 GPM, 111000BTU
I installed this water heaterto replace an older similar version. It gave me consecutive error codes of failure to ignite and flameout. Then only failure to ignite codes. Will return this item.

  • Amazing deal!!!
Style: Natural Gas, 4.75 GPM, 111000BTU
Our hot water heater went out right before Christmas. It was a standard 50 gallon tank style and after doing some research we decided to convert over to tankless to prevent future water leaks and also hoping to find a more efficient option!! The cheapest 50g tank we found was 900.00!!! So, after a few days of research we decided to get this one! Best decision ever!!! It only took about 25.00 in parts and a few hours to remove old tank and immediately as soon as this one was hooked up 2 minutes later we had HOT hot water!!! Only down side is, we can't run a bath and wash a load of whites at the same time or it overloads it and water goes cold and if taking a looonngg shower the water goes cold and have to turn off water and wait about 2 minutes or so then good to go!!! Definitely a more affordable option when no hot water for a few days lol. Will possibly upgrade later in to a bigger unit to suit our families needs!! It arrived on time, very well packaged and good to go!! I would suggest to invest in better vent pipe if you have natural gas for sure. The one included is a little thin. 15.00 a lowes ... show more
