Description

From the Manufacturer A masterpiece of innovative optical design, this compact, lightweight, high performance standard zoom (26-78mm equivalent) delivers a fast F/2.8 aperture over its entire focal-length range for maximum creative flexibility. To maintain critical sharpness when shooting handheld it includes VC (Vibration Compensation), Tamron’s state-of-the-art, tri-axial image stabilization system. Three compound aspheric elements, special LD glass, and BBAR coatings ensure superb correction, color fidelity, and freedom from flare. A minimum focus distance of 0.29m (11.4 inches ) offers exciting close-up opportunities. Compact & lightweight the AF 17-50mm is ideal for shooting on-the-go SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC Highlights Di II Lenses are designed for exclusive use on digital cameras with smaller-size imagers and inherit all of the benefits of our Di products. These lenses are not designed for conventional cameras and digital cameras with image sensors larger than 24mm x 16mm. Vibration Compensation (VC) Handheld camera shake is the leading cause of blurry and unsharp pictures. Several leading companies now make lenses with built-in optical image-stabilization systems that sense the amplitude and direction of the shake and compensate by moving optical groups within the lens. Tamron’s exclusive new Vibration Compensation (VC) system that’s built into the Tamron AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro and the Tamron AF18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di-II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro lenses performs a similar function, but it executes it much more effectively due to its innovative breakthrough design VC delivers blur free - handheld images for incredible results VC mechanism employs a three-coil system Lens element compensates for vibration using 3-steel balls (making movement quiet & smooth) Exceptional images at slower shutter speeds – reduces the need for a tripod Bring out contrast to motion & stillness Eliminate the need to shoot with a Flash VC Off - VC On Aspherical Elements (ASL) Provide the Ultimate in Image Quality and Compactness) Tamron uses several hybrid aspherical lens elements in many lenses bearing the Aspherical designation. These innovative optics allow us to achieve the ultimate in image quality, and at the same time produce lenses that offer remarkable zoom ranges in extraordinarily compact packages. By perfecting theses cutting-edge advances for series production, Tamron has advanced the state of optical design, and virtually eliminated spherical aberration and image distortion from the high-power-zoom series.Through the effective application of Hybrid Aspherical Technology, one lens elemen tcan take the place of multiple elements without compromising performance. This is what allows us to produce remarkably compact long-range lenses that deliver a uniformly high level of image quality at all focal lengths and apertures. Achieve the ultimate in image quality with Asperical (ASL) lenses Extra Refractive Index Glass (XR) Extra Refractive Index (XR) glass can bend light rays at steeper angles, thereby decreasing the physical length of the lens while enhancing imaging performance by minimizing optical aberrations. This has allowed Tamron to develop a line of shorter, smaller- diameter, lighter lenses without sacrificing lens speed, and actually upgrading image quality compared to older designs. XR glass is costlier than conventional glass but it yields enhanced optical power distribution, making possible many of the outstanding and innovative lens designs that bear the XR designation. XR glass, with its superior light-bending power, makes it possible to design a short-barrel lens with the same light-gathering ability (aperture value) as a long-barrel lens—even with a smaller lens diameter. By using this principle Tamron has been able to shorten the length of the entire optical system and produce lighter, more compact lenses of the same speed, and also to provide greater zoom ranges in lenses that are much more convenient to carry by hand. Special glass for better performance and more compact lens designs Super Performance (SP) for Discriminating Shooters Tamron SP (Super Performance) series is a line of ultra-high-performance lenses designed and manufactured to the exacting specifications demanded by professionals and others who require the highest possible image quality. In creating SP lenses Tamron’s optical designers put their foremost priority on achieving superior performance parameters—they are all designed to a higher standard with little regard for cost constraints. As a result, Tamron lenses bearing the SP designation feature impressive and innovative designs that have established an enviable reputation for excellence among those knowledgeable photographers that demand the very best. Low Dispersion (LD) Low dispersion (LD) glass elements in a lens help reduce chromatic aberration; the tendency of light of different colors to come to different points of focus at the image plane. Chromatic aberration reduces the sharpness of an image, but glass with an extremely lowdispersion index, has less of a tendency to separate (defract) a ray of light into a rainbow of colors. This characteristic allows the lens designer to effectively compensate for chromatic aberration at the center of the field (on axis), a particular problem at long focal lengths (the telephoto end of the zoom range), and for lateral chromatic aberration (towards the edges of the field) that often occurs at short focal lengths (the wide-angle end of the zoom range.) Low Dispersion (LD) Glass for Greater Lens Sharpness Internal Focus (IF) Internal focusing (IF) provides numerous practical benefits to photographers including a non-rotating front filter ring that facilitates the positioning of polarizing and graduated filters, and more predictable handling because the lens length does not change during focusing. Even more important, Tamron’s Internal Focusing (IF) system provides a much closer minimum focusing distance (MFD) throughout its entire focusing range. In addition, IF improves optical performance by minimizing illumination loss at the corners of the image field, and helps to suppress other aberrations that become more troublesome at different focusing positions Zoom Lock (ZL) Another original Tamron mechanical engineering concept is the Zoom Lock (ZL), a simple convenience feature that prevents undesired extension of the lens barrel when carrying the camera/lens unit on a neck strap..

  • Great Great Lens, that happens to be a bargain too.
Style: Canon
I bought this lens before I went to NY in Feb 2010. I happened to get there during a historic snow storm. If not for the VC (image stabilization) and the f/2.8 (wide open aperture), I would've probably missed half of my favorite shots from that trip. There I was walking around NY with an umbrella in one hand and my camera in the other, snapping away with one hand in at night, getting blown this way and that by the wind and trying to lean away from pedestrian traffic. They say that great equipment can't make you a better photographer, but this lens definitely makes me look a lot better than I am! Here is my response to 2 common concerns I hear: (1) It has the same focal length as the kit lens (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS $100 on ebay). Reviews applaud that lens as a great kit lens to start shooting with - light, fast and IS - for $100 over the price of the camera body). This lens cost more than the body I first clicked it into (Canon XS/1000D). But these two lenses are NOT in competition with each other. This lens is much sturdier and the wide-open aperture has it competing with the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras that costs almost twice as much for almost identical specs. At least 70% of the shots I've taken with this lens, I wouldn't have been able to try with the kit lens. In comparison to the Canon f/2.8, I haven't tried it but have heard anecdotal evidence that it is sharper. If the extra $450 was not a big deal in my budget, I would have gotten the Canon. But instead, I sold my Canon XS body, upgraded to the T2i/500D body and had change left - with that $450 difference. Btw, now I can report that 1080P video looks gorgeous on this lens because I was able to upgrade bodies. (2) USM/Fulltime MF - Yes, the Canon USM autofocus motor is legendary and it is faster, more accurate and quieter than the Tamron autofocus. That was true of the Tamron predecessor (pre-VC Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di-II LD SP ZL Aspherical (IF) Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras, and it remains true in this model. Although a friend has tried both and has said that the VC version is still markedly improved. Fulltime manual focus would be great. I would absolutely love to have that instead of flipping the MF/AF focus switch with my left hand (and sometimes forget to switch it back). Again, I will refer to the above issue as to where I put the extra $450 that you would otherwise spend on the Canon for USM and Fulltime MF. BOTTOM LINE: If price is not a concern, get the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. This lens is basically a cheaper version of that. But it is A LOT cheaper, so if price IS a concern - think first about what else you could do with the price difference - camera upgrade, rent, car payment... This might be the better lens for you! ... show more

  • APS-C Camera (like a Rebel)? GET THIS LENS
Style: Canon
Canon's kit lens that comes with most of the Rebel cameras is an EF-S 18-55 F/3.5-5.6 - it is light, I'll give it that much, but it's also really cheapo build quality! The Tamron is much heavier. That's the price you pay for such high quality pieces of glass in the lenses. The Tamron 17-50 is an amazing replacment for the kit lens. It can do so much. If you take photos indoors, like of parties or family events, it's really quite perfect. On the other hand, you can stop it to F/11 and you'll have amazingly sharp pictures on sunny days. Everything is in focus, with great colors. If you buy one lens for your SLR, make it this one. It will really make a huge difference. You can even do a lot of things you would normally want a 50mm prime lens for - such as a portrait of someone with a blurred background. I also found it very useful for taking pictures in a museum. Like many museums, the Air Force museum in Dayton, OH keeps it dark, as UV light degrades paint finishes over many years. This lens kept up and took tons of non-blurry photos with no flash. Why would you want to pay a lot for a lens with a constant F/2.8 aperture? Well, it opens up a lot of options. Most previous cameras I've had will decrease the shutter speed with more zoom, which provides the opportunity for more blurry picture. With the constant 2.8 - zoom is now not a factor in that. Tamron's vibration compensation (VC) is quite powerful. I was able to take pictures inside of tunnels on the PA Turnpike with very little blur with it on. The only downside to the VC is that it will use up your battery much faster. It also clicks slightly when it engages, about the same volume sound of that snick an SD card makes when it is pushed in. The focusing ring on it moves freely when switched to MF. When it's in AF, you can't really move it like you can on the Canon lenses - it's attached to the focus motor. There's a lock notch on it that locks the focal length to 17mm. This is there to keep the lens from extending while it's hanging on your neck. One suggestion, if you are taking landscape pictures outside, you can get a circular polarizer for this lens (72mm) - it will make the sky more blue, and reduce reflections on water and windows. • Beware: Amazon allows counterfeit and "grey market" items sold by 3rd party vendors
Style: Canon
I don't know if what I received is even the item listed here. What I do know is that the serial number on the item is not in the Tamron system. This was confirmed not through some automated search, but from speaking directly with an employee at the factory. So this lens is either a counterfeit or a grey market lens. That means there is no warranty or support from the manufacturer. This seems to not only be the case for the 3rd party seller -- Celltime -- but all others that are selling these below the retail price of around $650. Tamron will not support *any* lenses sold from someone other than an authorized dealer, and they cannot confirm the authenticity of any lens unless the serial numbers match their database. I searched through all those for sale on Amazon and there is a clear distinction: all authorized dealers have a similar price of around $650, and all those selling for less are not authorized dealers. Buyer beware. Thankfully, Amazon is allowing a return and full refund, but this experience was annoying. Tamron has some responsibility here as well to make sure their true products are not sold by non-authorized retailers. This lens is likely legit, but they won't support it regardless. Using authorized dealers is likely more a mechanism to price-fix their products than to ensure authenticity. I wish I felt comfortable taking the risk, but without the warrantee, any repair would more than make up for the difference in savings and a repair is likely to be needed sometime in the next six years. ... show more
