There's cameras work great easy set up
Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2026 by Prospect HARRY

  • So much potential. One fatal flaw.
Size: 2PK
I have several Tactacam Defend cameras and two Tactacam 360 cameras. The 360 units included built in lithium battery packs and solar chargers. I had to get lithium battery packs and solar chargers plus the SD memory card as a bundle with the fixed position Defend cameras. The app runs on an Android Pixel smartphone with OS version 16. Each has the Premium Plan. All have strong signals. Been using them for a couple weeks now, and here's my feedback: Setup and configuration: - Overall, pretty easy. You simply pick a plan for each camera, then scan the barcode on the camera to bind it to a plan. - Configuring the settings is also quite easy. There are small sets of video and camera settings. Nothing overwhelming or difficult to understand. There is bubble help for most settings. Gemini answered any questions I had, so it has seemingly extensive knowledge of these cameras, the app and the Pixel. - I'm using AV/DC 12V, 2A external adapters (not included) with the Defend cameras and the included solar panels with the 360 cameras. All easy to assemble and mount. Well designed and crafted. Monitoring and Operation - The cameras did their jobs and detected motion and took still photos. - They don't send video. While they can record video to internal memory, they don't send it to cloud storage. - If video is recorded, it's not trivial to retrieve remotely. - The on-demand live stream works well. It takes a good ten or fifteen seconds to wake up the camera and start streaming, but it works. - Motion or check-in photos are sent to the app and likely cloud storage. They are logged in an in-app timeline and calendar that are easy to understand and view. Additional Benefit: The cellular connectivity works well, and it's a great backup to on-prem WiFi cameras. Should the Wi-Fi be down for some reason, say power outages or range issues, these seem to compensate well. All sounds great, right? So, why the low score? - Positioning: The cameras are not fish eyed. They're a very strict letterbox dimension, and this makes them very difficult to position at a distance that captures what you'll need. It's very easy to find out you've mounted them too close it too far and need to continue to figure out how to reposition them. It's amazing how many times I needed to re-distance them and remount them to capture everything without losing motion sensitivity or part of the area of coverage. Too close, you're not getting everything. Too far, you get everything, but lose most alerts. Apparently, they perform best at 60' or 70' from the object. They also provide no coverage of anything beneath the mounting position. It's a wide-screen format that limits upper and lower areas of coverage. They really should switch to a lens with increased areas of coverage. - The "fixed position" Defend cameras have adjustable mounting brackets, so you can manually adjust the vertical and horizontal angle, including the ability to point the camera upward from a lower grade mounting point such as a downward slope from the structure being monitored. - The 360 camera has a fixed position mounting bracket, and the problem here is that the camera can't tilt above 0° horizontal. So, if the mounting position is below grade, such as a downward slope, from the structure, it's impossible to get the structure in view. You'll need to position the camera higher on the mounting mast, tree, post or whatever so it is above the structure that is up-grade from the camera. This means that the 360 camera needs to be much higher on the mast, and can present a mounting problem if a higher mounting position isn't available. This is an extraordinary disadvantage of the 360 camera that the fixed-position camera doesn't have. Tactacam was very short sighted in this PTZ design. The 360 always needs to be at least slightly above the monitored object. - Alerting: The cameras would've rated 5-starts but for one fatal flaw: Real-time alerts. They're not working consistently. They real-time-alert less than fifty percent of the time. While the cameras are detecting motion and sending the alerts, the app doesn't notify until the phone is unlocked, so alerts are suppressed until then. I consulted Gemini and performed extensive troubleshooting without success. Gemini largely pursued troubleshooting of the Android 16 settings, and I extensively changed them based on the roadmap laid out by Gemini. While the Ring cameras alert in real-time regardless of the phone's disposition, Tacacam Defend doesn't. The app hasn't, as far as I can determine, been updated or tested with the newest Android OS, which has integral AI interpretations of notifications, modes that suppress alerts, and most importantly, rates notification queues as "Priority" or otherwise. The Ring camera app uses the Priority queue. Defend, it seems, doesn't. Tactacam needs to pursue testing and development on Android 16 and fix this, or the cameras are no longer useful in Security contexts. They're just "logging" activity, but not alerting. This is unsatisfactory. I contacted Tactacam Support, and they promptly reached out to me to perform preliminary troubleshooting. They then escalated my ticket to their Level 2 team, and the ticket went silent. Crickets. I can make assumptions regarding the "escalation", but they'd just be assumptions. Verdict: If you're interest in Tactacam for real-time security alerting and you're on the latest Android platform, skip it. If you just need logging, great option. I can't speak to iPhones. Maybe they work fine. No idea. I don't have one. ... show more

  • Focal field of view
Size: 2PK
Love the idea of a cellular camera versus Ring which requires WiFi but the field of view for these is very narrow and not ideal for an external monitoring system unless you have a very focal point you want to monitor and a place to mount the camera away from that target. I have these mounted on a barn to monitor three doors and I would need to mount the cameras on the opposite side of the field to get an adequate field of view. ... show more
