  • Solid enclosure Solid enclosure
Well built enclosure that does a great job reducing server noise. My only suggestion is that the fans supplied to exhaust heat from the enclosure are noisy since they are placed where the noise is not contained by the enclosure. Top cover should have noise absorption above the fans. There should also be an option (knockouts?) for more than 2 fans. ... show more

  • Flawed but salvageable
PRO: - Long. Plenty of space for my giant Supermicros. - Heavy and solid like a tank once built. - Does reduce ~36% noise like advertised, especially reduces high pitch whines. - Big flat top gives me a big metal workbench/storage surface CONS: - NO AIR INTAKE!!! How is it supposed to cool anything without an air intake? I burned out a backplane even with the fans running 24x7. - Machining quality is poor. Stripped a number of screw during build because things didn't line up and I had to bend and force things. - Sound reduction leaves much to be desired. It is not "soundproof", but it does at least reduce noise. - Built in fans are noisier than hoped for. The built in temp gauge sounds like a good idea, but you find that it just kicks the fans on for 30secs, then off for 30secs, ad infinitum, and that's annoying. WORKAROUNDS: 1. OVERHEATING: I cut a hole in the bottom, removed the fans, and installed new quieter fans at the intake and exhaust, and put some foam insulation between the servers, and created a wall so only the intake cold air gets drawn into the front, and only the hot air from the back gets exhausted out the top. Case air temp reduced from ~100°F/38°C to ~70°F/21°C (can get up to 80°F/27°C if I run a heavy load) 2. NOISE: Extra noise insulation may or may not work, but replacing the fans with quieter ones that just run constantly was the better choice imho. The cycling on and off was going to be the death of me. OVERALL: The lack of an air intake makes this a 2 star. If you install an air intake+fan, it's then a 3 star. ... show more

  • Do not purchase this without a talented hanydman ready Do not purchase this without a talented hanydman ready
There are two major issues with this product - manufacturing and documentation. Let's go through the manufacturing problems that made this assembly impossible without a team of 3 people across a seven hour build. • Bottom panel, side, 3rd screw. Not tapped correctly, had to tap and thread ourselves. The screw hole was not bored cleanly and we could not feed a screw in there. Without our handyman available, we would have had to stop assembly on step 2 and return the entire rack. • The hinges or hinge mount points were not tooled correctly and we needed to increase the height of the screw holes for them in order to install them. This was done by drilling them out. • The welds on the door opposite the hinges were improperly aligned, preventing the doors from closing. We had to grind them down to get the doors to close. See before and after images attached. This was done with a Dremel and grinder attachment. • Exterior side panels have six screws - two of the screw holes in the middle of the panels were not usable and the screws just turned freely in them. • The door locks are too loose to hold the doors close, so we had to grind down the bolts in the locks for a tighter fit. This is extremely important as the product is marketed as noise-reducing, which necessitates the doors close securely. • Front door cannot be installed as-is. Too little clearance when the side panel is installed. Can either have the exterior side panel or front door installed, but not both. We ended up solving this by loosely screwing in the hinges, lining up the door and attaching it, then using a Phillips-head attachment on a ratchet to tighten the screws from the inside. In regards to documentation: • Instructions did not indicate anything about the orientation of the side panels, which are critically important so the door hinges are on the correct side. These can easily be installed upside down, which will prevent you from mounting the doors correctly and you must disassemble the rack to fix it. • No mention of the door locks in the instructions. Not how to install them, not the hook that needs to be placed in them to be a functional mechanism, absolutely nothing. • The instructions recommend installing the vertical rack bars before attaching the lid and other components, which makes it almost impossible to reach the screws. Users should install these near the end of the process for an easier time. There were *multiple* moments in this incredibly painful process that should have ended with us not being able to assemble the rack. If it hadn't been for one of our team being an incredibly seasoned handyman, we could not have completed this process and would have had to return it. As it is, the doors are still not sitting perfectly flush, so more noise is escaping than we'd prefer, and we'll have to review and modify the rack even more to make it work. I understand that this is one of the least expensive sound-dampening racks available, but the machining and documentation were so abysmal that it's actually astounding. Once assembled, aside from the problems with the doors not sealing securely, it looks like it'll work for us. But proceed with extreme caution and do not purchase this unless you have the personnel available to make significant modifications to it - expect a product that will not work as it is delivered to you. ... show more

  • Had it less than a year and am regretting it more than ever
I haven't had this thing for long and never really was happy with it, but now less so. First, it arrived dented and damaged. While they replaced the broken piece, they never offered to replace the panel that was dented. It definitely reduces the noise, but it is so horrible with ventilation that you can't even really use it. I only have a switch, a UPS, a NAS, and two servers in this, half the rack is empty, and I honestly can only run one of my servers and it still exceeds 40°C sometimes and I have to simply open the doors and put loud fans up to it to vent it out, making for even more noise and definitely more maintenance. I've tried additional fans inside to help move the air better, but there simply isn't enough ventilation to make this work. It need far more than two ventilation fans, either that or maybe these fans are simply damaged as well. Now those two ventilation fans have started becoming much more audible and I really am starting to feel like I should've just never bought the damn thing and just dealt with the noise on an open rack. It will take more engineering than what it is worth to get this working as intended. ... show more

  • Terrible instructions, bent pieces
The instructions are terrible. I followed them perfectly and got to the very last step and discovered one of the side pieces should have been rotated 180 degrees so the holes for the rear door hinges would be in the right spot. The door orientation was step 1 and there is NO indication of this... now I have to disassemble the whole thing back to step 1, rotate the door and then assemble it again. I already have one hour into this and now I am looking at2 more hours to complete (one to unassemble and another to assemble correctly). On top of this, several of the pieces came bent so I had to bend them back myself - one wasn't so bad but the other just looks crappy. Not impressed at all given the price. I am done with this project for this weekend - will give it another go next week and update when it is up and running ... show more
