  • Quite Different from a "Usual" Kinsella Novel
A quick read, and a good story, this departs from the Shopaholic style zaniness you might be expecting from Sophie Kinsella, writing under a different name. I enjoyed it because while I do enjoy Kinsella's fun and wild rides, the outrageous antics sometimes become annoying. This is a strong, sturdy story with imperfect characters and complex situations. Some of the storylines feel unresolved at the end, but thta bolsters the "realness" of it. Seeing the same events and issues from different sides makes it feel more deep and intimate, as messy and confusing as real life. I would definitely recommend it, but remind any reader that it is not silly fun like Kinsella's other novels. ... show more

  • Entertaining but predictable
A pretty good read, better in my opinion than her other writings as Madeleine Wickham. Very predictable in outcome, but a good premise and pretty fair writing.

  • A Darker Wickham Story
For fans of Sophie Kinsella, if you've never read books by her under her pin name Wickham than you may be in for a tad of a shock when picking up one of her Wickham books and not finding the lighthearted, bubblegum pop type books you associate with the Kinsella moniker. However, I love both sides of Kinsella / Wickham. The tone of the Wickham books tend to be more serious and not so happy go lucky. They tend to touch on more deeper issues instead of just weddings and shoes, and clothing.... Both are fabulous, but they just are extremely different which I suppose is why she writes under the two names as opposed to writing under just one name... In Swimming Pool Sunday, it's even more dark than her normal Wickham fare, but not so dark that you find yourself in a corner balled up bawling your eyes out. Louise and Barnaby are parents to two full of spunk little girls; Katie & Amelia. The two girls are full of life and like all sister's have a bit of sibling rivalry going on. Katie who is the younger sibling, adores Amelia and longs to meet her approval and so she tends to copy everything Amelia does. When the story opens up, it's a Sunday afternoon and the girls are waiting for their father, Barnaby to show up to take them on a Sunday outing (Louise & Barnaby are seperated), however they had forgotten about this being Swimming Pool Sunday, the annual day when all of the community goes to visit a neighbor's pool. Barnaby, who has made plans to take the girls fishing, is none too thrilled when he arrives to two girls begging to go swimming instead of fishing... However, in the end Louise, Amelia, Barnaby and Katie all end up at the swimming pool. Katie and Amelia are bouncing all over the place and are taking turns doing tricks. Katie who is hungry for the attention of her parents and her sister takes a dive that doesn't quite go as planned. Little Katie's dive ends in her being sent to Emergency and having surgery. Katie is in a coma and no one knows if she'll survive. Louise has been in a relationship with Cassian, a lawyer who has aspirations to become a huge political force and who is enamoured with Louise because of her familial ties to the political world. Cassian, upon hearing of the accident, immediately sets his sights on a lawsuit involving Hugh & Ursula Delaney whom held the Swimming Pool Party. Barnaby is less than thrilled when he hears of these plans, but eventually fearing the unknown and the money that they may need for Katie's care, he eventually finds that he too is on board to sue the Delaney's. Hugh & Ursula, who just three years ago underwent a similar tragedy with their own son who ultimately died, is still grieving their son and when the lawsuit comes up it becomes more than Hugh can handle. Ursula though, seems to be in her own world and determined that things will resolve themselves and that no lawsuit will ever go to court. There are other players in the book who round out a great supporting cast and help to make this story a great one. However, there was one storyline that just seemed to not have any point in the book: Daisy and Alexis storyline just didn't seem to contribute anything to the main story and I find myself wondering what the point of that whole storyline was for... However, overall, this was a great story and as always Wickham/Kinsella weaves a masterful story and creates characters in which you either love or hate. True, it's a tad darker than other stories she's written, but she's done it wonderfully. So glad that this was finally available on Kindle!!! ... show more

  • Not the same spark
I have read all of Kinsella and Wickham's books and I have to say, I find all the Wickham books to be fairly dull. The thing that I love the most about Kinsella's books are the humor and character development, and I find none of that in her books written under Wickham. This book is okay, it actually has a much more interesting plot line than her other books, but the characters have no layers, they are all quite superficial. In this book, one of the climax moments is a love interest between two mismatched characters. I imagine the author thought this would be a highlight of the book but I found myself not caring in the least because there was so little development in this plot line. I never understood why these characters were even in the book. I can't recommend the book as a whole, but I wish someone would take the central plot and rewrite it, because I think it would be an interesting book. ... show more

  • Loved it.
I loved this book I am a big fan of Madeleine Wickham AKA Sophie Kinsella. I have all of her books and this was the last that I was missing. I couldn't find it in the stores since its an older book. But Amazon had a few to choose from. The service was great. And the book was great.

  • disappointed
I was under the impression this was a new Madeleine Wickham book, and since I thought I had read all of her books, I was anxious to get this one. However upon closer inspection, this was a re-release from the 90's. Any way, I was disappointed in this book. The plot was interesting but it seemed to end rather abruptly. It was as though in the last 10 pages everything was wrapped up. Sorry, I can't recommend this book. ... show more

  • Seriously good read, characters well developed and a well thought ...
Seriously good read, characters well developed and a well thought out story. Slightly more depth than some of Kinsella's other stories, would like to see more novels from this writer. She is a talented story teller. So many of the "chick lit" books on Amazon could be developed into far more interesting stories, but it seems like most of the authors pinch off their stories; limited character development, limited back story. More like reading novella excerpts in Cosmo than actual full books. ... show more
