  • A few practical considerations to take into account
Size: .27 CU FT
The overall construction of this fire/water proof box is impressive! The box is heavy, 28.5 pounds for the SS103 and 56 pounds for the SS104. I'm a big guy, but when I picked each up for the first time I really was taken aback by the density and weight. I was pleasantly surprised to discover they put a pneumatic piston on the larger SS104 to prevent the really heavy lid from slamming on your fingers, not so (and not needed) on the smaller SS103. Both boxes advertise they float, even when full. This is something I was not aware of prior to purchase. The one piece, inset, water gasket looks to be highly effective and precisely aligned. The internal dimensions are EXACT as published which is good and bad. You are getting exactly what you paid for, but, for the smaller box SS103: If you intend to have your papers in a tabbed file folder, binder or anything wider than the exact width of a letter sized piece of paper (8.5in/21.59cm), forget it, it will not fit flat without curling up on the side. (8.5 inches/21.59cm, exactly, for paper width (what they call depth of the box) is all that you get). To solve this inability to put docs in a binder or folder, I metal clip the top of each set of documents with a small ID card, as they wisely made the document length (what they call width) longer than 11 in (at 13.1 in/332.7mm there is plenty of room for a large metal clip). I suppose the good side of this is you don't end up with all that extra paper and plastic from file folders and binders because the height (or depth) of each box is conservative at 3.9in/99.1mm for the smaller SS103 (and 3.76in/95.5mm for the larger SS104). The low security keys are extremely simple, In fact, all 4 of my boxes, from 2 different suppliers, came with the same exact numbered key and lock. The lock is secure, and I have no doubt it will keep closed in a fire, or if dropped, but if you are trying to keep out a thief, well, I'm betting you will get the same 805 key as I did when I ordered my boxes (or your thief orders his). I am ordering some small desiccant bags (moisture absorber) to keep the inside of each box dry, as random moisture from your papers does tend to condense on the interior side walls without it. Each box is shipped with a minimal desiccant bag of silica gel inside. All in all, I am extremely pleased with my purchase. For me it was an infinitely better option than spending 18 times the money for a fireproof file cabinet or safe, and the small box SS103 does fit flat inside the drawer of a legal size file cabinet. FireKing recommends you store the boxes flat for best performance. Two thumbs up! ... show more

  • This unit is a LOT bigger and heavier than you think.
Size: .38 CU FT
I got this unit primarily to use as a waterproof/fireproof place to store my computer backups (personal, not business) and whatever else was important but not critical enough to go in the safe deposit box. In short: protection against fire & water, not protection against theft. Even though I read the size and weight info in the ad, this unit is still bigger and heavier than I thought it would be. And it should be noted that the instructions say that this should be stored on its side, not with the handle facing up like a suitcase. Keep that in mind when you consider where you want to store it. Overall, I'm pleased with the unit. I keep it under the futon in our guest room, on its side, with the keys and instructions in a baggie taped to the top. As others have noted, the keys are not exactly super-high quality, so if you leave a key in the lock for convenience, you run the risk of the key getting accidentally snapped off in the lock, and a locksmith bill to fix it. If you can live with the limitations, this is a reasonably priced option for storing valuables. Recommended! ... show more

  • Good
Size: .15 CU FT
Seems a good option for people who share apartments and/or have no water proof safes snd need to keep their documents in those.

  • Great Protection.
Size: .38 CU FT
This box is a great place to keep my important documents. It was heavier than I expected. Just be aware that the insulation means it might have less internal space that you anticipated as a result.

  • Sucky packaging, overall good product thus far
Size: .38 CU FT
Prompt arrival. Packaging allowed for no privacy; no standard Amazon "brown box" packaging; arrived in the manufacture box only so other people knew what I had bought (package looked just as it would sitting in your local store). Item arrived with dings/scrapes on 2 of the 8 rounded corners. These aesthetic blemishes didn't disrupt the function of the safe and wasn't worth the hassle of carrying this heavy object to a UPS store and paying shipping charges to return. The product arrived with a soap bar-sized silica packet. I live in humid Louisiana and have had this safe for 1.5 months now and haven't noticed moisture on my documents or anything else this chest contains as of yet - I'll definitely update this review if this changes in the months to come! It's heavy enough (50-60 lbs) that someone thinking to steal would have to think twice. I've never lifted it off the floor - I'm 5'1" and this thing is about 42% of my body weight. I tipped it over and scooted it across my floor with my legs to avoid back strain. You have to lie it flat, so make sure you have enough space on your closet floor (or wherever you wish to put it). The handle works nicely for dragging it from the wall towards me whenever I wish to open & use it. I've had no problems with turning the key or opening/shutting it. As advertised, I was able to place 2 standard-sized folders (together they're about as thick as 1 ream of paper) filled with impossible/nearly-impossible-to-replace documents in this chest without it crinkling/bending the edges + 4 CDs/DVD fit comfortably. Bottom line: though not pleased with the packaging that this item arrived in, this product serves the purpose for which I bought it: to be a waterproof/fireproof safe for my valued items. ... show more
