This garden Tiller/Cultivator works as advertised. Attached is a patch of ground I had to clear from grass to plant new grass. The best way was to cut the grass short as possible then run tiller through the grass. It worked fine in this south central Virginia clay soil. It bounced over big rocks which I would take out with a small shovel. Overall it saved me renting a mantis tiller and having only tilled ground. For the price of a rental to do this I would have paid for half the sun Joe battery powered Tiller/Cultivator. I have used this all over my property and now I am already more than satisfied with the cost of this item. You have to pay attention to when it's binding with too much grass wrapping on the insides of tines. You have to take them off and remove grass that winds up on shafts between tines and case. This is a very nice little cultivator. It works great on soil however, it does get bogged down with vines and clumps of grass but without those it’s a breeze to use and easy to control and gets down to about 6 1/2 inches definitely a buy you would want if you’re a gardener or if you just don’t like bending over to weed. ... show more

While I would certainly not attempt to use this as a tiller, it works well as a cultivator. The compact size makes it perfect for cultivating between plants in the garden. Having a single tine allows me to get close to the plant, and the lightweight nature allows for good control so there's no damage. It is also great for mixing the soil when top dressing plants. It's far easier to use than my corded tiller for cultivating. The build quality is pretty lightweight. It can handle the occasional small rock, but I wouldn't bet on it being able to survive hitting a large rock. The same for hard soil -- it does not have anywhere close to the heft or power to last long or do a good job. I would have preferred a design where the tine rotates slower and with more torque (or even an adjustable tine speed) but you can't have everything. The length is fine when fully extended so I don't have to stoop when using it (I'm 6 foot 2). A bit longer would have been nice, but it's fine as-is. The tine has been holding up fine and, since there's only one of them, it's a breeze to clean out any clumps or windings. It's way easier on my back than using a hoe, far more nimble than even a compact tiller, and the battery life has been very good. I can't speak to the longevity of it as of yet, but so far it's been a 4.5 star performer for the purposes I use it for. ... show more

Pros: Works perfect, just what I was looking for. Very strong tiller, long battery life. Cons: The length of the tiller is too short. I'm 6'1" and bought this for bending and back saving, for me it's to short therefore I have to hunch over to use it so it puts strain on my back and that's what I was trying to get away from. I'll keep it and live with it, but Sun Joe needs to make this unit about 8 to 10 inches longer for us tall folks. Sun Joe, if you lengthen the design send me one please! ... show more

I was looking for something to use to turn over some bare areas in my yard so I could plant some grass seed. After reading the reviews on this and considering there isn't much more out there like it I decided to go ahead and order it. When I received it, the blade was bent at the hub. I had to remove it and used a hammer to flatten it out. Not a big deal but could have been packed better. I tried it in several areas of my yard and was impressed with how well it performed in areas that were moist and soft. It turned the ground over and did a nice job. As far as its performance in the dryer areas, that's a different story. I had to press down hard to get it to bite into the ground. Even though it did break up some of the dirt it really didn't want to dig in. This isn't made for that type of work. I had to go back to my old way of using a shovel to break the ground loose. Overall, for use in a flower bed or small garden this will work great. If you're wanting to break dry hard ground than this is not the tool for you. ... show more

We have raised beds and the soil is fairly soft and the tiller worked fine, the light weight will cause it to bounce around a bit. I tried it on the ground outside of the raised beds and it just bounced and scraped the surface which I anticipated. It was bought only for the raised beds to replace a gas powdered tiller that I cannot keep running. It is a very light use tool. ... show more

This review is for Sun Joe 24V-X2-TLR14 48-Volt iON+ Cordless Garden Tiller/Cultivator Kit | W/ 2 x 2.0-Ah Batteries and Charger. The machine is very light weight for a tiller, almost too light weight as it will “bounce” off hard patches from time to time. I used the sun joe tiller to break ground on a new garden space and to re-till an old space. It worked well on the previously tilled space (roughly 3 years previous), but could not break ground on the new garden space. This is not a matter of function, but the light weight of machine. The solution was to use a shovel to pierce the fully established grass prior to tilling. The 2.0Ah batteries that came with the machine last roughly 30-45 minutes of constant running. I also purchased the larger 6.0Ah batteries pictured which provided 90-120 minutes of constant running. I can safely say I have beat the sun joe tiller into submission and it has been very durable, EVEN when breaking ground. ... show more
