Each panel is constructed with a vent that allows the wind to pass through, which protects the umbrella from wind damage.

It works nice for sun protection if you want something a little less dark for summertime. It could be a little wider though. I'm a bigger gal and it doesn't shade me fully, so I don't think it would be a good option for rain.
