  • Beautiful, classic, and unique winter coat
Color: Merlot Size: Medium
I got this coat in the green and red color after searching for it for YEARS! I bought this exact coat from Modcloth (the "once upon a thyme" coat) in green for about $150, about 6ish years ago. It was stunning and I wore it all the time, I got so many compliments. It reminds me of the coat that would be in a fairytale or something. Then I gained some weight after COVID and pregnancy, and the green coat no longer fit me. But I couldn't find it until now! The green color is much brighter than I remember, so I returned it and kep the red one. It gives me little red riding hood vibes! The red is a deep, rich red that looks even better in person. The fabric is thick and durable, without being stiff or bulky. I can tell it will be very warm during winter and remember it being quite warm during the coldest days. It's a very flattering fit and looks so feminine and pretty. The hood is HUGE - maybe to a ridiculous level - but I don't mind it! The buttons are also a bit difficult to button/unbutton because they are pretty big, but as I wear it I'm sure that will get easier. Plus, that also means that the buttons are less likely to loosen and fall off over time. FYI I am ~145 pounds, 4''11, and the medium fits perfectly with a little bit of wiggle room for thicker sweaters underneath. Overall, this is a wonderful, timeless, and staple everyday coat that is also elevated and unique, and will last you a very long time. UPDATE ONE WEEK LATER: the coat started to feel very tight around the arms/shoulders. I don't remember the green one in the same size that I returned feeling this tight, so I decided to get another of the same coat (red, size M) and see if it fit better. The new one feels much less tight around the shoulder area, with the original one I could barely lift my arms up all the way. I'm not sure why there would be such a big difference for the exact same coat (same color and size). Maybe I got one that had been previously washed by someone and returned, or maybe there's some quality check issues with this coat. In any event, just something to be aware of. ... show more

  • If you're like me, and repurchasing this coat, the cut is a little off. 3.5 stars is more accurate.
Color: Ivory Size: Small
I absolutely adore Steve Madden's Once Upon a Thyme coat, as I have the green version purchased from a different vendor in the past. I wanted to add to my collection, so I purchased the white version here. My green coat is a small and is very roomy without being baggy, and still looks tailored. The fit of the white coat is similar in the body, but the arms! They are significantly tighter! My previous version had room to move your arms comfortably within the coat. This white version is skin tight in the arms. It's a little uncomfortable in my opinion, and I'm not sure how well it would work if I wore any long sleeves underneath it. They'd have to be pretty thin. I'm not sure what went wrong here, because previously I would have described this style of coat as the best I've ever had. This most recent purchase makes me question the quality and consistency. Perhaps, the manufacturer changed the cut in the time between my previous purchase and this current one, but if so, the change was a bad decision. I had planned on purchasing more colors here later, but I don't think I'll be doing that anymore. Also of note, the buttons do tend to come lose, but are relatively easy to repair. ... show more

  • Love this coat!
I was eyeing this coat for a while on another site. The extra fifty dollars they were charging put me off, but when I saw it here, and in such a pretty green, I decided to give it a try. I'm so tired of black and gray, which most of wardrobe consists of, so this unusual shade of green was perfect. As far as color accuracy, it matched my screen very well, and is a medium emerald green. Not olive, definitely a bluish green, and not so bright that I feel like a spotlight is on me walking around. It's really pretty. Now sizing. I have problems with coats because I have a short torso and a bigger chest. Add in some recent weight loss, and I had no idea which size to go for. For reference, I'm a 38C chest, 34 inch waist, and 39 inch in the hips. Based off the size chart, my waist and hips would fit a large, but my chest was more of an extra large. I decided to err on the side of caution and went for the extra large, and I'm glad I did. It fit well all over, slightly tight on the upper arm (not painful, but ladies with larger upper arms *may* be slightly uncomfortable), slightly loose on the waist, and slightly snug across my chest. Considering how much trouble I have with coats, this was a good thing, even if it doesn't sound like it. The waist and arms weren't bad, and even the chest wasn't terrible. A little pulling, but not bad. But since I hated the buttons (they looked so cheesy, and are huge plastic domes that are a little difficult to button -- Steve Madden, what were you thinking??), I replaced them and moved the new ones a little closer to the edge (the old buttons were pretty far away), and boom! Problem solved! With the belt tied, it's super cute and gives me more of a defined waist, which is nice. Even the lower skirt in the back is cute. I wasn't sure I'd like it, but it gives the coat some flair. If I ever get tired of it, I can always take it to the tailor and have it made one length. I've had this coat for a couple weeks now, and worn it a handful of times (weather isn't cold enough yet for daily wear). And while there is a little pilling, it's not enough to put me off. I was also pleasantly surprised at how heavy it is. Not terribly thick, but definitely warm. So warm I might not need to layer when I wear it, but if I do, there's space to do it. Last thoughts: the pockets aren't where you expect them - they're tucked into a front pleat, so that takes some getting used to. But they are nice and deep. The sleeves are a little long on me at 5'3" (they hit me mid-hand when my arms are down at my sides), so longer arms might be very happy with the length. And if you decide to replace the buttons, too, just know there are twelve of them, four bigger ones (approximately 30mm) and eight smaller ones (approximately 17mm). I found simple pewter ones at a local craft store and did it myself, and love the results. Overall, I'm delighted with this coat! It's pretty, different in style from most other coats I've seen, and flatters my body. I get compliments every time I've worn it! Hope this review helps! ... show more
