  • It's a keeper
This valve spring compressor works as described. It takes a bit of fiddling to get it placed just right due to the confined space you're working in but after a few tries I was able to remove the valve spring keepers and move on. I only wish they had designed it so the jaws would adjust open to the width needed and hold the position. This model only lets you loosen the jaw screws but you still have to expand the jaws with your fingers to fit them over the spring ends. However after disassembling the entire 5 HP B&S motor I decided to purchase a new 6.5 HP OHV replacement engine for less than a hundred bucks. All the tools, parts and supplies needed to complete the rebuild would have cost far more than the new engine. If I'd never rebuilt an engine before I probably would have gone ahead and completed the rebuild, just for the experience, but no sense spending more money and time than needed. ... show more

  • It did not work for what I wanted but I think it works great for it's intended purpose
The spring compressor is well made, strong and I feel would work perfectly for it's real purpose. I tried to use it to compress a spring on an automobile rear disc brake emergency brake system. The spring involved was too compressed to allow me to fit the arms into the spring tor further compression so I could get a misaligned cable straightened out. I'm keeping the tool because I no doubt that it will come in handy sometime in the future. ... show more

  • Tool worked
This tool worked on a tecumseh 4hp with a bit of convincing. Not as easy as I expected, but would have been nearly impossible to get valve springs back in without it. I would buy again to avoid the frustration of trying to get them installed without it

  • Nice and USA made
That was my biggest surprise, US made. It is a heavy and well made tool, it made extracting the valves from one of the B&S (older 3 hp) engines I'm working on a breeze. Well worth the price and the wait to get it. Sometimes it is well worth getting the right tool and this was just the thing. It came in a black box marked Zim (registered) specialty tools, valve spring compressor #131 and a little sticker that says Stens and #750-174; it is the item as otherwise described. ... show more

  • Tool not even usable upon arrival!!!
I would give this tool a 5* if it had not come messed up. I have a motor on the table torn down waiting to take the springs & valves out, all I needed was this tool. I got it & was ready to get to work. As you can see, one of the legs is welded backwards and I'm not able to grip the springs and hold them down enough to release the retainers...soooo very frustrating for a $32 tool. Even in the frustration, I have used these compression tools in the past and I prefer them over other types of spring compressors. I just wish I had gotten one that was actually usable. ... show more

  • are easily installed. The keeper area is left accessible for ...
This tool is essential in servising valves in the larger of air cooled engines. It is possible to do disassemble the valve , keeper, and spring assembly without this tool. However, re-installing it can be very difficult and lead to frustration. With this tool, the compressed spring and it's associated seats, are easily installed. The keeper area is left accessible for final installation. Controlled release of the tension, capturing the keepers in their machined grooves, is very easy. . ... show more
