Really wanted to get the best available spinning reel for trophy trout fishing in lakes. Long casting and smooth drag are most critical concerns. Got out once using 10lb braid with FC leader. Incredibly smooth retrieve, great casting distance. Didn't really get to test the drag since the biggest fish I caught was about 17 inches. I do love this reel but i don't know if it's worth paying an extra $500+ over a Vanford, which I also have in the same 2500 size using the exact same line set up. At least for what I'm targeting. Nice to have a flagship reel but don't think I'll be swapping out all my combos anytime soon. ... show more

    • Dual drag system for bait and strike.

This is by far the best spinner kayak live bait fishing for ocean fishing. The dual drag system allows for you to adjust the drag for the live bait and the strike. It's hard to use preset drag setting's for live bait because; 1. the live bait maybe be large or small thus the setting needs to be adjustable, and this reel lets you do just that; 2. when trolling the tension has to be adjusted according to the drag the bait is putting on the reel. Hence the dual drag does this because you can adjust it after sending the bait out. The drag can be finetuned to the bait on the fly. I don't believe there is another spinning reel maker that has a reel that can do this. The closest I have heard about is the conventional lever drag reels that Avet are making with a magnetic brake: and hopefully I'll be trying that reel out soon. ... show more

I ordered the 12000 that way I can drop rigged ballyhoo back while trolling cause I don’t like conventional reels offshore. It said it can take 500 yards of 50”lb test. I only think I got 400yards on the spool. I bought a 500 yards spool. Didn’t take it all. Not even close. I wanted something with more capacity in case I hook a something bigger than 200+ lbs ... show more

I really like this reel. It is very smooth and lightweight. I got it in the 2500 size to use for bass fishing. I don’t think you can go wrong with most of the Shimano reels.
