  • Non-trivial to install, but much better than any other type of gutter guard
Size Name: Standard
I have over 200' of gutters around my house perimeter, with a combination of live oak, water oak, and magnolia trees dumping leaves. The oak flower in the Spring is particularly pernicious and the water oak leaves can get through the small openings in many types of gutter guards. Moreover, squirrels like to run along my gutters and from past experience will push in most of the low budget types of guards. I've tried them all, which led me to this type. These are completely successful keeping roof particles, oak flower, and water oak leaves out of my gutters. Once installed a simple brushing removes any debris that manages to accumulate on top of them (a mail in coupon nets you a free brush). They are also considerably more rugged than the plastic or aluminum mesh ones I've tried previously. Professional reviews and Consumer Reports all favor this type of gutter guard, both for functionality and for durability. I can attest that they live up to the hype and make an attractive installation. The cost is a bit more than $2 per foot, but is a fraction of what a professional installation would cost. Each package has 12 4' (actually 47") sections. Each section is formed as a stainless steel fine mesh screen sandwiched between two aluminum rails, one of which has a T cross section to butt nicely against the front lip of the standard 5" gutter. The construction quality is impressive. The package includes about 50 self-tapping screws and a nut driver socket. The sections are surprisingly rigid, a testament to the quality of the mesh. Difficulty of installation depends on your gutters, easy for gutters attached to a fascia board in standard fashion, more difficult if you have to bend up the the back of each guard to fit your particular gutter installation. Trimming requires a hacksaw to cut through the rails, and either heavy scissors or tin snips to cut the mesh. Fortunately, trimming is only needed where you reach the end of a gutter or around a corner. You also need a drill to install the screws. The mesh has been formed to have small ridges, which helps water sink into the gutter while making the mesh rigid. A small amount of mesh extends off each end for closing off the gap between sections, probably the weakest aspect of the design since the overlap can catch debris. My experience in installing these is that it is non-trivial but straight forward. Bending the mesh as described in the directions slowed me down, a lot. Over 100' of my installation is non-standard, with gutters attached under a 1x2" bumper on the fascia board. That meant I had to bend up the back edge of each section close to the back rail so I could attach it to the bumper. The bending requires some muscle because the mesh is tough stuff. It worked, but is an example of the kind of creative modification needed if your gutter is not a standard installation. A pamphlet comes with the gutters that suggests bends to fit a number of non-standard installations, one of which is the one I just described. If you find yourself a few feet short as I did, you can order single 3' sections of the same gutter from Home Depot for a comparable price. This is a 5 star product because it is effective, durable, and rugged. My only criticism is that it would be nice if the company devised a neater way to join sections rather than just overlapping the screening. ... show more

  • Seems like a good product
Size Name: Super 6"
When we purchased the house we had those large sponges in the gutters. The inspector recommended that we remove them. We had someone take them out. They have a couple years lifespan. I researched several products and landed on these gutter guards. Our last house had gutter guards with a much larger opening. Leaves would get stuck in them and accumulate. I decided on these with a micro mesh surface. We have had several rain showers and they seem to work well. I put up about 15 feet of guards myself to see how it was done. They are simple and straightforward to install. I had someone finish the installation since I’m in my 70s. Too hard to go up and down the ladder. I think it’s a good product and expect it to last a long time. ... show more

  • Easy install. Did first gutter (~20') in 1 hour including in/out tools and ladder.
Size Name: Standard
Just installed today. Won't know for some time how well it works. Will definitely keep all debris out. My only questions are will a heavy rain flow over or into the gutter and will I have any ice dams during the winter? The install was very easy but it was a straight run and no additional bends were needed since it fit under the shingles easily, the roof is not steep, and the gutters are relatively new. Metal shears worked fine although the screening takes a little effort. I think a pair of scissors would work better on the screening. Will try that for the next gutter run. I bought it because I just tied my gutter downspouts into a drainage system with underground pipes. I didn't want to clog the pipes with leaves and debris. Also, my second story gutter seems to be getting higher as I get older. I am less inclined to go up there 2x a year at 65 to clear out the debris from a maple tree that overhands it. It was this or cut down the tree. Will post again when I install them on that run, hopefully not from a hospital bed. UPDATE I did the 2nd level gutter. More challenging but not because of the Guards. Working 20' in the air for 1/2 the gutter and the other half on a ladder perched on a first floor roof with some incline was the challenge. Went up easily. This gutter required the Guard to be screwed to the face just below the roofing so I had to bend the edge instead of simply sliding it under the roofing. At one end it was above the flashing and the other end, due to the downward slope of the gutter, it was below the flashing. I didn't see anything about whether to mount behind or in front of the flashing. I chose behind since the flashing was not screwed or nailed. I figured if they didn't attach it to the wall I shouldn't either. So I pushed it up under the flashing which holds it in place without screws. As it fell below the flashing I added screws to hold it in place. This time ~30' installed in less than an hour including bending. I followed instructions for bending clamping the guard between two boards and tapping it down using a soft mallet to avoid denting it. WARNING: When you bend it the Guard has a tendency to bend upwards towards the ends. Just take it in your hands and gently straighten it out before installing. So far only light to moderate rain. Waiting for a real downpour to see how it performs. Also watching to see how it works during winter - fingers crossed no ice dams. Very happy with the ease of install. But I am very handy and can fix pretty anything from cars to appliances to electronics. I think anyone not afraid of ladders can do it if they take their time though it might take longer and a couple of extra lengths to account for mistakes. But if you don't like heights find someone to do it for you. Working on a ladder using both hands to install is not for everyone. Especially since I found I had to place the ladder against the house under the gutter and not the gutter meaning the ladder was under the roof overhang leaving you standing pretty vertically instead of leaning against the ladder. The ladder interfered with the Guard a bit when placed against the gutter. Not bad for 1st floor but higher up is another story. ... show more
