I saw a glowing review from the NYT saying these were doubleplusgood and thought they would make my art pop but the pigment is a lighter intensity than imagined. Nice variety of colors, but I could have sworn that Prismacolor colored pencils I used previously had stronger color.

At the color pencil holder these are pretty good. They are great for beginners and even artists. If I were just starting out this is a set I would definitely buy first.

Note: These are the WATERCOLOR pencils. When they came in the mail I was surprised, at first, to see them in the blue case and then realized they said they were watercolor. I got on Amazon and searched again and found the regular ones for a slightly higher price and ordered them, too. They also came in a blue case (I was expecting clear) but were the regular colored pencils. With identical packaging, make sure you check the labels! Today, I got on to leave a review of these and noticed that the title doesn't say they are watercolor. I'm not sure if I got the wrong ones or if they're listed wrong, so I'm leaving this review of the watercolor anyway. Though a "surprise" set of pencils, I'm pretty happy with these watercolor pencils. I have used Faber-Castell Art Grip and Albrect Durer, as well as Derwent Inktense. These color very smooth and vivid, though not quite as creamy as the Albrect Durer feel. I'd say they are a step above the Art Grip in quality - they are more vibrant and smoother/easier to lay down dry. They react about as well as the Art Grip when water is added. Are they as good as artist grade pencils? No. Are they fun to use for coloring books? Absolutely! If Staedtler would put out a line of more than 24 colors, I'd have no problem recommending these as a must-have staple to anyone who wants to get started with coloring. My only complaint is that 24 colors doesn't go as far as you'd think (even 60 can feel surprisingly lacking sometimes), so even if you start with these you'll soon be reaching out to supplement with colors from other brands. ... show more

I am addicted to these colored pencils. The color laydown is so much better than cheaper brands and the triangular, coated barrel makes them so comfortable to hold and use that I don't have to use pencil grips on them for my arthritic hands. Very little pressure is needed to lay down smooth, creamy color. There are 24 colors, which may seem like too few, but they harmonize perfectly together in terms of shade and color value. They are great for adult coloring, for both large and small spaces. They can be sharpened to an ultra sharp point with my TripWorhy electric sharpener. They can also be sharpened well with a metal hand-held sharpener, but it is more difficult. It's worth it for sheer convenience to use an electric sharpener, that gives a perfect point that lasts a long time. The folding easel is compact and makes it easy to keep near me while I color. I think it would make a perfect gift- a set of Stadtlers and a coloring book, that can be used in a chair, at a table, or even in bed, with the easel on a small nightstand. Great German quality. I gave up on cheapie colored pencils- these last longer and give much better results! ... show more

I bought these pencils on a whim because some in the coloring community were using them and I liked the bright colors. I wasn’t expecting much since I mostly use Prismacolor and Polychromos. With that said I can’t believe how awesome these pencils are! I received them about two weeks ago and they have been the colored pencils I’ve been using the most. They pair up great with Prismas and Polys. They are wonderful by theirselves. Great color lay down, smooth and very soft but they don’t break. Excellent for fine detailed work. Now if they only came in a larger set with more colors. You won’t be disappointed if you try them. They are definitely good enough for professionals. ... show more
