  • Spirograph (with putty to secure rings)
Children 7+. A well received B’day gift. Read directions and show children how to have successful designs on their own. The putty is a bit challenging to secure so the ring doesn't move out of sync while drawing. (Back in “the old days” the rings were secured to a paper fixed onto cardboard with tiny pushpins, resulting in better design success). ... show more

  • Got these to flashback on childhood...
...and am glad I did. I like to doodle, sketch and color. So besides a blast from the past that I wanted to revisit, I realized that this was a lot of fun and that I didn't know what the heck I was doing with it as a kid. There's so much to it then I remember as far as creating designs. It's a lot of fun still and better know that I know there's a method to the spiral design making! :D I use different gel pens with it and am experiencing a great time making great art. It was awkward to get used to it at first, but if you remember to keep your pen/marker at a 90 degree angle when working the wheels it'll be okay. Also, I like the putty better than the silly little pins from decades ago. No complaints and I'm glad to have tried this out again now that I'm older. It's fun and you can come up with some great original designs by keep track of wheel size and patterns as well as numbers you use to line them up. Too much fun! I only gave it 4 stars in the easy to use column because the bigger wheels take awhile to get used to, if you ever can. They are awkward and hard to control precisely. Just takes practice to keep from getting most of your design done only to have a little jerk of your hand the wrong way to mess up the work. It's easy, just takes time and practice for the odd shaped ones and the biggest wheels in my opinion and experience with it. I was embarrassed at first to tell my husband what'd I'd bought and why, but even he's amazed at what great designs and intricate things come out of time and experimenting. Playing with multi-colored gel pens makes the experience way better. I haven't even used the markers that come with it. This is relaxing and fun! ... show more

  • Putty is horrible.
I like the case and the ability to keep everything together, but the putty has got to go. It was so hard when I opened it and would not stay on the paper. Luckily I had some cork board from my work and a few stick pens (like the old day) and my 5 year old grandson had a better time working with it once the wheels would sit still. We love it otherwise, I would say make it both ways. Those that like the putty and have another set using the stick pins. That way everyone gets a choice. ... show more

  • Great set
My 7 year old grand daughter loves this set and has produced some beautiful designs with it. I also like using it and so does my 10 year old grand son. I would recommend this set and I would buy as a gift for anyone who likes art. You can make some great designs. You can buy extra pens in different colors to use with this set like I did. My family loves it. ... show more

  • The Spirograph of my childhood.
This is the Spirograph that I spent hours playing with as a child. I have been playing with it frequently since it’s Delivery, and it is so much more fun than the adult coloring books. The only drawback is a feature that I don’t even use, and that is the instruction book that shows you how to make specific designs. The issue that I see is that the Number identification codes on the clear cogs are also clear and very small - impossible to read without a magnifying glass. Since I’m just enjoying the creativity with it, I don’t look for those marks of identification so it isn’t a problem for me. I bought some White card stock and a set of gel pens that fit into the spirograph cogs, and have been making cards. I trim the card stock to fit into 4 x 6 envelopes, and use the spirograph to create colorful and unique designs on the card before writing my sentiment. Recipients tell me they enjoy the hand created cards because they are a gift of my time and effort, and not just a couple of bucks spent at a card rack. Even if I don’t find other actual uses for the spirograph, it is so enjoyable to play with! It is made of durable hard clear plastic with more options for creations than I can even imagine. It comes with paper although I prefer to use card stock and a few gel pens . (I bought a larger set of 30 pens for more color choices. ) I highly recommend this and not just as a gift. ... show more

  • Expect a learning curve
I love playing around with this but the learning curve for some parts is a pain in the hind quarters.

  • Putty? A Bad Idea
I like the case it's in and the variety of pieces, but the putty was so hard we couldn't push the rings down enough so the circles stay inside. It's so hard it pulled off the paper when the ring was removed. Three pens aren't enough; it would be worth paying a little more for a few more colors. Now I need to find either better putty or get some pushpins and something sturdy that the pins can easily push into. I loved the old Spirograph much better. As they say, close, but no cigar! ... show more
