Doesn't say on the package that I could find if the paints were or were not permanently staining. We erred on the side of caution and assumed they would stain given that most of the painted rocks would end up in the garden, and added ways to protect clothes and other items (little aprons, pullover tee shirts, big table cloth etc). Perfect craft idea for the kids and then once dried we put them outside in our rock beds. I loved how creative they could be on these. We had left over paint so we are painting other rocks too.

Maybe buying cheap dollar store paint and grabbing some rocks off the ground would be cheaper, but this kit makes it SO easy! It also seems as more of an activity to kids when presented as a kit like this. This is very budget friendly!
