  • It is best to use a fitting (or line) wrench to remove ...
I ordered this radiator for my 1990 F150 pickup with the 5.0 liter V8 with automatic transmission. Amazon as well as the Spectra website both indicated this is the correct radiator for my vehicle. I wasn't sure what size radiator I had originally in the truck but it turned out to be the single row model. This new one is a two row model. The extra thickness did not cause any issues with the installation. The mounting points and hose connections are all in the correct location. The extra depth did not cause any clearance issues with the fan blade or any other engine mounted accessories. The new radiator comes with new mounting grommets that need to be installed. Remove the metal inserts first and re-install them after you place the rubber grommets. It also comes with new fittings for where the transmission lines attach to the transmission cooler part of the radiator. They looked identical to the old ones on my old radiator so I installed them in the new radiator with a 5/8" wrench. I dropped the new radiator in place and it bolted right in. After trying and failing to attach the transmission cooler lines I realized the new fittings do no not fit the existing lines and had to swap back out to the old fittings. Check the new fittings with your lines before you install them on the new radiator. It is best to use a fitting (or line) wrench to remove and re-attach the transmission lines to avoid rounding off the corners of the fitting. Mine were 1/2". While refitting the fan shroud, I noticed there were no mounting holes that matched up with the shroud bolt holes. It does have a large enough flange so I just marked and drilled two mounting holes and transferred the nut-serts from the old radiator. New ones are not included. After attaching the new hoses and filling the radiator, I filled it and started the process of "burping" the cooling system. I noticed a leak around the cap area and realized the new rubber cap used to cap off the second overflow nipple had a hole in it, so again I used the old one off the old radiator. Double check the passageway for the overflow tube from the radiator. Mine had a piece of styrofoam blocking it. I seemed to have every minor issue one could have with fitment issues which was frustrating and caused the installation time to be double what it should be, but the new radiator does fit and mount perfectly. It is twice as thick as my old one which makes me happy but I never had cooling issues with the old one even while towing in the hot Texas heat. The new one cools fine too. The radiator appears to be as well made as the one I replaced. Time will tell how reliable it is. The price was lower than what was available from local parts houses. It shipped quickly and was well packaged in a large cardboard box with styrofoam supports on each end. There was no damage but IF the box was severely mis-handled, I see where it could be as there was not really any protection in the core area. ... show more

  • Upgrade 1 to 2 Core Radiator Issues
This is an upgrade from the 1 core radiator. My 1994 f150 xl 302 auto with AC came stock with a 1 core radiator that just barely kept it cool and was not enough now that I am hauling a tandem axle trailer. The two core radiator fits right in the stock mounts and other reviewers have explained tips like installing rubber mounts and then putting metal inserts in later ( do not tighten the upper rubber mounts to tight or radiator will leak). Use a little dishwasher soap on the mounts top and bottom to get radiator in and adjust easier. The stock shroud has to be trimmed about 1 inch so that the fan blades are half in and half out so the fan works properly ( or you need to buy a shroud for double core radiator which is shroud F5TZ-8146-AFA and cost big $ if you can find one or maybe you can luck out at junk yard or you can use cut off wheel and cut off flat 1 inch part on your shroud and call it good enough.). The mounting clips on bottom if 2 core radiator do not line up with 1 core radiator. You have to cut slits on the 2 core radiator for clips to mount to proper positions on stock 1 core radiator shroud.. If you do not have clips in proper position the bottom if shroud can shift and your shroud can hit fan and stop fan from moving. You will also need to make your own top mounts For shroud. Whether you decide to buy a stock 2 core shroud or modify your 1 core shroud, I suggest you make one more mount in between two top mounts in shroud and make sure top radiator hose is positioned not to rest on shroud because in hit temps the middle too if shroud will drop and hit fan. Check your bottom hose and make sure it is positioned not to rub on anything. I have worked on a number of f150 and have seen where the hoses are wearing grooves in them from rubbing on the shroud or other things from.improper installation. Basically if you are upgrading the easiest thing is to get a double core radiator shroud that is built for the thicker radiator. I did modify my stick one and it seems to work fine but I would have (and still might) get the proper stick shroud. BTW the shroud is key to having proper radiator operation. Get yourself a tranny cooler and oil cooler too! Good luck. Ooh yeah a 7/16 ratchet open end box end wrench makes undoing the four fan mounting bolts a lot easier. UPDATE :: I replaced upper and lower hoses and replaced fan clutch. The drain valve on the radiator did not work and only let my new antifreeze pour out by unscrewing the valve right out. I probably list $20-30 of 1 day old antifreeze. I do not think the stock valves can even be unscrewed right off. I need to double check the throttle body hose inlet on the radiator neck because it looked like it is not working and other reviewers have said to make sure hole on radiator neck is clear. Do not know what the deal is with the drain valve...they are a pain straight from Ford too and it is hard to get a hose on the spout which is pointed towards radiator support. Well, I got her done and the lower radiator hose had a hole on the bottom that was nearly wore through, my old radiator was single core and leaking a tiny bit, and my fan was starting to wobble past specs...that is all fixed. Next will be thermostat, bypass hose and water pump...right around timing chain time! Yipee! ... show more

  • Update :
The radiator almost installs it's self, in my 94 F 250 ,looks to be good quality over all, but you better have shills at rigging a way to attach the fan shroud. . Top have to have holes drilled, left side did not have any where to drill, as the top of the frame was angled off right where I needed to drill. The bottom comes with clips to set the shroud in but he slots in the radiator for those were two inches off or more on both sides. I would up drilling holes in the shroud and in the closest steel of the truck and used zip ties to pull down the shroud. The truck runs cooler which made me feel better about the total screw up they caused as far as mounting the fan shroud goes. Update: Only two months in, the bottom right side of this radiator stared leaking between the tank and gasket. Return time is gone, I had to go to the local parts store and get another for about $60 bucks more. Good damn thing I can do the labor my self! Don't buy this radiator. ... show more

  • Does not support the factory fan shroud for a 1988 ford f150.
The radiator fits properly, but the mounting holes for the fan shroud are not correct. disappointing but it was not worth it to return the radiator. Had to remove the fan shroud and use a tie strap to support upper radiator hose, since the fan shroud keeps the fan blades from hitting the radiator hose. My truck is a 1988 ford f150, I could have drilled holes to support the fan shroud but feared it would void the warranty. Its an old truck, otherwise I would have returned it. My pictures were not the correct file type or you could see what i'm talking about. ... show more
