Description

In this playing edition of Sousa's great marches, Lester S. Levy has included 23 favorites that have continued to enjoy universal appeal to this day. Here are the great standards that are everyone's favorites" "The Stars and Stripes Forever" (both piano transcription and song publication), "The Gladiator," "Semper Fidelis," "The Thunderer," "The Washington Post," "The High School Cadets," "El Capitan," "King Cotton," "The Manhattan Beach March," and "The Liberty Bell." Here are the favorites that brass band musicians will remember: "The March Past of the Corcoran Cadets," "The Free Lance," "The Invincible Eagle," "The March Past of the National Fencibles," "The March Past of the Rifle Regiment," and "Jack Tar." Sousa fans will find some of their own favorites — "The Diplomat," "Hail to the Spirit of Liberty," "Hands Across the Sea," "Imperial Edward" — and the editor has included three of his personal favorites — "The Picador March," "The Beau Ideal March," and "The Bride- Effect." All these favorites are presented in reproduction of the original sheet music, along with reproductions of the original sheet music covers. Lester S. Levy selected the music for reproduction from his own collection of sheet music, and he has also contributed an appreciative introduction. Whether you are a Sousa fan, an enthusiast of marching music, or are simply looking for something stirring to play on your piano, you will find what you are looking for in this great collection. The book is in near perfect condition, The music is at the level I want. Will be interesting to learn. This is a Dover book a reprint of older material in this case a collection of original sheet music with the covers. The music is easy to see.

  • Friend Loved the Book
Bought this for a friend and she love it. I don't play piano so I have no other information.

  • Great book to strike up the band...........
This book, which contains the pieces I want (and need) in a comfortable print size, lies flat on a piano's music rack. This is an exact replacement for my Sousa book of marches that I somehow misplaced. No surprises here, just a good book to satisfy my wants.

  • Fun way to work on your octaves
Not all of these marches fit comfortably on the piano: (1) Sometimes too much is in octaves (example: Washington Post March). (2) Not all counter-themes fit beneath two hands so no piccolo parts for you. (The Thunderer particularly suffers from this.) (3) The "breaks" which occur between the quiet statement of the final melody and its loud, grandioso statement often have prominent drum parts for which the piano is a poor substitute. The editor, from back then, seemed rather fond of rather long pedals -- more appropriate perhaps for marches around submerged cathedrals. I also wish that the Gallant Seventh had been included and that the pagination were a bit more gracious. But put all that aside. There's a lot of fun to be had from this volume. Where else can you get music for the Liberty Bell March that ended segments of Monty Python's Flying Circus? ... show more

  • A good source for the marches
John Phillip Sousa wrote so many marches, and at least these 23 are helpful. What is needed is a really first class reduction. There used to be a volume of Sousa marches for Piano - 4 hands. It allowed some of the piccolo in Stars and Stripes to be there (I added more of it). and the arrangements sound complicated enough to be interesting, even though they aren't really that hard. I think it was a Ditson publication. What I'd really like would be a comprehensive collection in piano duet of about 40 of them. It could even be in two volumes! This volume will have to suffice for now. ... show more
