Description

The entire corpus of Brahms's short piano pieces is contained in this volume: the delightful and familiar Waltzes; the effective Scherzo in E-flat Minor; the satisfying Eight Pieces; the two Rhapsodies; the Fantasies — among the most perfectly finished works Brahms ever wrote — the three Intermezzi; the Intermezzi, Ballade, and Romance comprising Six Pieces; and the superlative Intermezzi and Rhapsody that make up the final Four Pieces. The music is reproduced directly from the definitive Vienna Gesellschaft der Musik-freunde edition, edited by its renowned musicologist, Eusebius Mandyczewski, who made his revisions from original sources, often Brahms's own manuscripts. For this Dover edition, the Editor's Preface (Revisionsbericht) and the Table of Contents have been translated into English. Noteheads have been reproduced in a size large enough to be read easily at the keyboard. Margins and spaces between staves are generous, permitting insertion of written notes, analysis, fingertips, running measure numbers, etc. This edition will be welcomed, not only by the classical pianist, but by all who will find it highly practical and convenient for instruction, study, reference, enjoyment, and virtually any other purpose. • God Bless Dover Music
All these Dover books are basically high quality scanned reproductions of public-domain scores from erstwhile music publishers, some of them excellent, such as the Brietkopf and Härtel edition this one book is taken from. The engraving is usually very well laid-out on these old scores, and in this case excellent. On a par with Henle. I own quite a few Dover Music Books now, and they always try to get the best source material they can find and bind it well and on good paper. And they do in fact lay flat on the music desk and hold up well. For a quality, sewn binding on nice paper they are a real bargain for the musician on a budget, or an enthusiast who simply wants to follow the score while listening to a recording. They're not always perfect, depending on the source materials, but they're usually very good, and always readable at the very least. What a joy to have all these priceless Brahms masterpieces in one volume that anyone can afford to buy. May Dover stay in business forever... ... show more

  • My wife really likes it
My wife pulls this out occasionally and practices and has used it to try and teach our daughter a few things. She really likes the book.

  • Great Pieces
Great book with a fun selection of pieces. One note is that it doesn't have page numbers. This makes the table of contents not very helpful.

  • Another wonderful, pianist-friendly Dover edition!
What more can I say? Dover editions never disappoint - crystal-sharp printing, soft and sturdy binding, intelligent page-turns, well-spaced staves. The Brahms Shorter Works book is no exception. Whether you are a professional musician, a music teacher or just a not-very-good but enthusiastic amateur pianist like myself, you will love this beautiful edition. ... show more

  • Good selection
These books are a little thick to lay flat on a piano, but with time may end up doing so. There is quite a large selection of pieces, and the price was unbeatable.

  • Good quality and price
Clear print and easily bendable. Very happy with it.

  • Great score for home use. Lays flat when opened.
Dover has really improved their binding. This piano score was beautifully printed and bound. It lays flat on the music stand on my piano. The staffs are large and the printing is solid and very readable. Great Bargain.

  • Kindle e-book version useless
Score systems are low res images, slightly larger than a thumbnail. If you are buying this with the intent of playing from the score, think again. If you zoom in, they get fuzzy and pixellated. I cannot think of a use case for this Kindle version. I do own the print book. I was hoping that buying the Kindle version to have a more portable library would be good. The Henle print editions are so expensive but quality, of course. Henle's e-book products are also excellent, and include the ability to save a crisp PDF. The two Dover e-book editions I tried out were useless. Fortunately, I was able to get both refunded. ... show more
