One of my great pleasures in life is using bass fishing gear off the beaches in Baja, Mexico to catch big, tough, sub-tropical species (e.g. roosterfish, leopard grouper, corvina, jack crevalle, triggerfish, snappers, etc.). So much more fun than just cranking them in with overmatched gear. To that end I ordered this Sougayilang bait casting reel for my next Baja trip. At unboxing I couldn't help but notice similarities to my old Abu Garcia Black Max, nevertheless, the Sougayilang exceeds the Black Max in several regards (BTW, I love my Black Max and it has served me well. I'm just using it for comparison.). The Sougayilang has an 8:1 retrieve ratio (my Black Max is 6.4:1). This allows me to RIP lures in when necessary (e.g. getting it over the fish or needing to re-cast to breaking fish elsewhere). Theoretically, it should be harder to crank on a large/heavy fish with such a high gear ratio (think: low gear ration=high torque/power) but I don't think it is an issue with the light gear, sporty approach I'm using in Mexico. Another perk is the wide handle radius. This may be a function of the higher retrieve ratio, but, whatever the reason, I really like having a bit more room and added leverage for my hand as I'm cranking the handle. I also like the "sticky" rubber paddle grips. The Sougayilang also wins the bearings race with 9+1 vs. 4+1 for the Black Max. Capacity is as good, if not better than my Black Max. The drag system appears to be large and beefy yet the release is smooth as line is drawn out during a run. The reel has nice, ergonomic, inward swept handles. It is also very low profile with the gear box at or below the reel seat height. Although it is strictly a cosmetic issue, I really like the simple black color with small red highlights. Classy. Both the spool and the handle have cut-outs in the metal. This has pretty much become a standard weight saver in modern bass reels but worth noting anyway. So, I loaded the reel with braid and put it on my 6'6" Mexico beach rod. I used a casting weight that is a bit shy of 3/8 oz. With very little effort I was shooting casts in the 45 yard range. Magnetic cast control was turned down to "1" and I experienced no backlash. Nice, nice, nice! One last thing is to point out that the side plate removal latch is located on the bottom of the reel opposite the handle side. This is nowhere in the instructions or ad. Just a heads up if you spot it. Finally, I should note that the price point is excellent for a reel with this quality and these features. This reel allows an Average Joe like me to have a baitcaster that would normally be well over $100. Flat out 5 stars! ... show more

This reel did not last past the first trip. The button would get stuck down and I could not reel. I finally forced the the reel and the button clicked back up. This happened several times over the trip. Thought I was going to break the handle off everytime I forced it.

As an avid, long time bass fisherman, I am quite used to paying, what my wife considers to be, big money for a good reel. I use only bait casters for my bass fishing and relegate spin casters for light stuff like crappie and brim. I really didn't expect too much considering the price of the reel. When I took it out of the box and unwrapped it, my chin dropped to my chest. This reel is beautiful. Once I got past my initial surprise, I started to inspect it closely for the features that I would pay big bucks for. I found all the features of my more expensive reels and more. I would normally change out the crank handles for the ones with soft, grippable rubber handles. This reel already had those. I got the owners manual and read it from cover to cover and found it to be the most comprehensive and instructive manual I have ever seen. It explained every single thing about the reel in very understandable English. I have yet to fish this reel, but if it works as good as it looks, I won't be dissatisfied in the least. I highly recommend this reel to serious fishermen everywhere. I am considering buying another for my flipping rod. ... show more

I wanted a high speed reel and saw this one so it decided to get it. I haven't been able to fish with it yet since my lakes are still frozen. But, so far, practicing in the yard, I can say that the reel is better than I expected. It reels smooth with no weird noises. The brake does a it's job. The drag seems to function as intended. The reel feels good in the hands. If everything works out, this might become my dedicated frogging and punching reel. ... show more
