First off, PQ is beyond words. I saw a A80K (OLED) in Costco a few weeks back. Very impressed with how it looked (and sounded in the store. Z9J is Master Series LED and it blew me away. Our main TV is X90CJ and we have been completely satisfied with it. I wanted a higher end experience for our basement (closer to a home theatre experience). Movies, and sports will be the primary use cases for this set. Breath taking is not too far fetched. We have excellent lighting setup for it. Where using in darkened room (movie watching mainly) or bright (sports), picture more than satisfies. We hooked up a soundbar (HTA7000) and are using the TV as a center speaker. Sound meets our needs too. No doubt the TV is expensive, but the experience is worth it. Excited for Thanksgiving and Christmas when the family will all be in town. Game Time!

*Updated, concise review (Sep. '22)* We've had this television for a few months now, and I'm still blown away by how nice, vivid and accurate the picture is. Colours look incredible and modern HDR/4K games look phenomenal. I cannot perceive any 'dirty screen effect' what-so-ever, and am still in awe of the TV's picture quality and sound, every day I use this set. The sound is pure, exceptional fidelity for television speakers, I love listening to music via this TV- the stereo separation is excellent. I have found that the 'cinema' sound setting gives the best fidelity and just keep it on that. Even old television programmes look great, you just have to know how to adjust the picture settings for different modes. At the current price of about $4,000, it represents terrific value for money. We've had: an X900F; X930E; and an X950H and now of course the Z9J. This really is a premium TV- the potential brightness is far and above even the venerable 'light cannon', the X930E. 4k video looks truly amazing- I have no complaints at all about this television. I have no regrets about not getting a TV with mini-LEDs- it's most certainly not worth an extra $3,000! This television is even better than the much touted Z9D- times have moved on since then. I love playing XBOX Series X games on this television- it's in a totally different league to the X950H (our TV before this one). Don't miss out on this television- it's an amazing piece of technology! My wife is similarly amazed at the picture AND sound quality of this TV, was a little cynical about the 'need' to upgrade but agrees that this TV is in a class of its own compared to regular Sony televisions. Never had a problem with a Sony TV.

The Z9J is the premier Sony LCD/LED TV. The 8k pixel makes the TV look incredible at any distance and it's upscaling from 4k is superb. Brightness and contrast are amazing with a good amount of dimming zones which limit blooming to a great degree. The HDR is great and the TV switches its settings to be able to display HDR and non-HDR content. Issues include cost and not real 8k input/output. 8k is achieved through upscaling and not through TV input with the exemption of photos. There really are not many 8k products on the market so there however as this changes perhaps with a firmware update Sony can allow the TV to take an 8k input. If you can purchase this TV at a discount it may become worth it however with the high price I may find another TV or wait for the 2022 TVs to be released.

I want to be fair and start this review with a few facts. I did not buy this television…yet. I am in the market for a new television and have been doing many hours of research. I have visited two businesses that have this television on display. These are not big box stores but dedicated audio/video companies. Many of my acquaintances have projection setups and those are not for me. I want the largest screen I can get at a price point that doesn’t require a second mortgage. That puts me in the 85 inch range for LED and 83 inch for OLED. I say this because I am a Sony fan and with the exception of one or two sets over the years, I have always gravitated to Sony. Sony’s largest OLED right now is 83 inches. After exhaustive auditioning of sets, I had settled on the 83 inch OLED and was ready to pull the trigger. Then they announced this 85 inch 8K model and I had to give it my attention. As I said, I was able to experience this television in person with a couple very knowledgeable salespersons. Let me tell you, when I first saw the picture on this set, I was blown away. The colors are so accurate and the brightness will blow you away. OLED is well known for the blackest blacks but you do not necessarily get a bright picture. With my current OLED, the room truly needs to be dark to get the most out of the picture. This 8K delivered the same deep blacks and also provided incredible contrast in really dark scenes. So many movies lately are just one dark scene after another and this set is outstanding in its ability to still let you see the varying shades of black and dark gray. On my current sets, they are just a muddy mess. I want to address something I read in a review. This television DOES provide an 8K picture despite what some have said. You have to be plugged in to a particular HDMI port to do so and if you don’t delve deep into the instructions and settings, you could miss this information. Now I do understand that there is not much true 8K content out there and many people will overlook this set due to that issue. There are some YouTube videos that claim to be 8K but when they were played on this set, they did not impress me. When a video that was recorded with a high dollar 8K camera was played back, again, mind blown. The upconversion of Ultra HD 4K video was also impressive. I brought along several DVDs that I have watched numerous times to test this. I took a friend along on one of my visits and he bought the set on the spot so I now have untold hours trying out this set with all types of content with one exception. Neither of us plays video games, nor do we own any video consoles or gaming computers so I cannot speak to that. I love this set. It is the best I have ever seen. I would have already bought it if it weren’t for one issue. This set is HEAVY. Sony says it weighs 140 pounds. It felt like much more when I had to help unbox it, install the feet and lift it onto a stand. I would be terrified to hang this on a wall. It is going to require either an industrial rolling cart or a very large, super sturdy piece of furniture. In order to hang it on a wall, I was told I would need to add additional support behind the drywall. Only one side of my current wall mount is bolted into the studs. The other side is held with anchors. This works fine for a relatively light 65 inch set. I just cannot see tearing the wall apart to add additional studs. Let’s just say I am trying to figure out how to rearrange my home theater to fit a new piece of furniture instead.
