Description

True to its high-end G Lens heritage, the SELP18105G lens features two ED glass elements and three aspherical elements for high resolution and contrast throughout the entire zoom range. The first Sony G Lens created specifically for E-mount cameras is true to its heritage, achieving outstanding resolution and contrast throughout the zoom range thanks to an advanced optical design incorporating two ED glass elements and three aspherical elements. From wide angle to medium telephoto, this power zoom lens covers approximately a 6x zoom range with a constant F4 aperture. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result. As focal lengths get longer, lenses built with conventional optical glass have difficulties with chromatic aberration, and as a result images suffer from lower contrast, lower color quality, and lower resolution. ED glass dramatically reduces chromatic aberration at telephoto ranges, and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings. Super ED glass provides enhanced compensation for chromatic aberration. Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight. Advanced Aspherical (AA) elements are an evolved variant, featuring an extremely high thickness ratio between the center and periphery. AA elements are exceedingly difficult to produce, relying on the most advanced molding technology to consistently and precisely achieve the required shape and surface accuracy, resulting in significantly improved image accuracy and quality. Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills. Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter. 2013 Sony Electronics All rights reserved. • This lens on my Nex-6 rivals my A7 with A Sony prime ...
Style: Camera Lens
I wanted to use my Nex-6 as a backup to my Sony A7 with a variety of Sony A-mount lenses used through the LA-EA4. I am very pleased with the IQ of the A7. I thought this 18-105mm f4 would be a good lens to put on the Nex-6 and have a fall back camera in my street photography. The shots I got when I received this lens simply amazed me ... and I am used to full frame and good glass. They were clear, crisp and the auto focus was fast. I was a little spooked to read certain forums and reviews about this lens having pillow distortion. It seems it is tru only on cameras that do not internally correct for the lens. I am happy to report my Nex-6 has virtually no such distortion. I was also hesitant due to some forum users reporting it was a video lens and somehow fell short in still photography. That it absolutely not true. I am also a videographer and have used Sony pro video cameras and lensing for years. These camcorders all had the Sony G lenses, and they are of remarkable optical quality in my experience. This 18-105mm f4 Sony G lens is probably at the top of the image quality ladder of all the lenses I have used in both still photography and videography. And that's exceptional because zooms usually do not have the IQ (image quality) that primes have. The zoom ring is smooth and predictable. The feel and build of the lens feels pro level to me. The sharpness and general color accuracy is good. I say generally because I did not take the time to look for things such as fringing on the edges, etc. I'm not trying to be superficial here, but I even like the way this thing looks on a small Nex-6. The lens barrel is relatively thin then progresses up in diameter as you go away from the camera. And on the business end of the lens is a wide, beautiful lens element. My years have taught me that, optical paths and other technological factors equal, there is no substitute for a large piece of glass for the main element. Bigger diameter glass gathers more light and resolves more detail. That's why even though this is an f4, it seems like a fairly bright lens when shooting. Simply put, his thing rocks. I'm going to try it on my E-mount Sony A7 and see if there are apertures where the vignetting (the 18-105mm is made for the smaller APS sensor) is reduced or nonexistent. I cannot imagine the image quality that combo would yield. Though the Nex-6 is a great camera, it simply cannot compete one on one with the A7 full frame and good glass ... Or so I thought. Now, unless I was going to blow up photos to large format afterward, I would equally trust this lens on the Nex-6 and the A7 with a prime. The full frame 100mm f2.8 Sony lens on the A7, on the other hand ... being an exceptional prime ... Might barely surpass this lens on the Nex-6. Overall this was a very good purchase. Very pleased. ... show more

  • Great Zoom Lens for NEX Cameras Great Zoom Lens for NEX Cameras
Style: Camera Lens
Photos taken at 105mm with NEX5T. They are cropped. Taken from about 40 feet away. UPDATE: updating to 5 stars. The more I use the lens the more I see how all of the benefits outweigh the bulk. Until a lens can offer the zoom capabilities of this lens while offering the high quality construction and pictures in a smaller package, I can't give this lens anything but 5 stars. This is going to be a brief initial impressions of this lens as I've only had it for a few hours. It came nicely packaged and despite knowing that it was going to be fairly big compared to the kit lens and the Sony 35f1.8, it was a little heavier than I expected Went onto my NEX 5T easy enough and then it was ready to go. The camera with the lens is much more bulky and heavy as expected but the lens has a good quality heft to it and seems well constructed. I took some test shots in moderate sunlight as well as mild indoor lighting. I did full 105mm and 18mm shots. My 35f1.8 takes noticeable crisper shots and the 1.8 aperture has outstanding background blur and bokeh, but I didn't buy this lens expecting it to rival that lens. I bought this lens as a versatile lens with good glass and good zoom and I believe I got it. I opted for this lens instead of more zoom with the 18200 and 55210 due to price and concerns with some criticisms from online reviewers. This lens has generally favorable reviews and didn't quite break the bank like other zoom lenses could do. The pictures I got were very clear and sharp throughout all the zooming. At full zoom the pictures remained surprisingly crisp and clear and I am very satisfied with the results so far. You're gonna want a good amount of light as the quality of pictures dropped significantly in poorer lighting situations but with a good amount of light you can expect fantastic quality shots. I knocked off a star because my personal preferences. The lens is big and bulky and while it is meant as a versatile travel lens, it is just nowhere near as travel friendly as my other lenses. However, the tradeoff is for high quality pictures with good zoom and I don't think you can get that without adding a significant amount of bulk and weight to your setup. I think this will be great for travel, outdoor landscape shots, shots of kids playing sports, wildlife, etc... The price seems justified so far and I am happy with my purchase over the other zoom lenses available for this line of cameras. As it stands, I can easily recommend this lens to others and will update my review after I have more experience taking it on a trip shortly. ... show more

  • Good value lens - comparison of Sony lenses
Style: Camera Lens
SELP18105G: This lens is a good value for the features and cost. For $600, the lens has f-4 max aperture, standard OSS optical stabilization, 6x zoom (27-157mm 35mm equivalent), internal focusing (lens length remains constant for easier handling), power zoom (smoother focusing for videos and can be controlled by the free PlayMemories app), and good weight of 15.1oz (< 1 lb). Yes, there is mild chromatic aberration and distortion, but both of these can be compensated. The chromatic aberration is not always noticeable (depends on the scenery), and is virtually gone by reducing the aperture to f-5.0. The distortion only shows up in RAW images, and any decent photo editing software can correct it with one click. SEL18200: This lens costs $250 more, but has 2x more zoom than the SELP18105G, but 1.3 higher f-stop at max zoom (smaller aperture, > 2x less light). Its about the same size as the SELP18105G, but weighs 18.5oz (3.4oz more). This lens does not have internal focusing or power zoom, but does have a relatively better stabilization that Sony dubbed Active OSS. SEL18200le: This lens has the same featues as the SEL18200 lens, but costs $100 less because it only has the regular OSS, not the Active OSS. Due to that fact, it weighs in at 16.3oz and is 1cm shorter and 1cm smaller diameter than the SELP18105G. The issue with this lens is that critics noted it's basically a rebranded Tamron 18-200mm lens, so you are paying a premium just for the Sony name. SELP18200: This lens is like combining the SELP18105 and SEL18200 lenses because it has the internal focusing and power zoom (indicated by the "P" in the model #), while providing 200mm zoom and Active OSS. See the above descriptions for benefits of these features. However, you are paying $1100 for this lens. SEL55210: If you have the kit lens (SEL1650 or SEL1855) and are on a budget, then this lens is the best option for you since it's only $300. However, you will have to swap lenses whenever you cross the 50mm zoom boundary, which may cause dust to settle on your image sensor. Also, it does not have internal focusing or power zoom, but does have regular OSS. SEL1670Z: This lens is Sony's premium lens with Carl Zeiss (indicated by the "Z" in the model #) AR-coated optics and f-4 max aperture, but costs $1000. But it has relatively weak zoom (24-105mm 35mm equivalent), and some reviews noted focusing issues. It has internal focusing and regular OSS, but no power zoom. For $1000, the lens should not have focusing problems, and the zoom needs to be stronger (at least 6x). Comparing Sony's E-mount APS-C lenses, this lens (SELP18105G) is the best value for the price. I tested this lens on my Sony NEX-6 camera. ... show more

  • I wouldn't think this was a G class lens from the price or quality, but it's still a great value. I wouldn't think this was a G class lens from the price or quality, but it's still a great value.
Style: Camera Lens
My only major complaint about the lens is its inability to hold a solid focus while I am doing zoom pulls. The whole reason I purchased this lens was to turn my a6400 into a camcorder with power zoom, and it did just that, however, if you want to pull zoom from a subject's face, even slowly, the camera will consistently do quick breathing for focus checking, which is extremely bothersome for professional video work. If it was just for home video and vacation footage, I'd have zero complains. Otherwise, you're getting an approximately 6x zoom with this lens which is the same zoom you would get from camcorders from the early 1990's, which is extremely adequate for most camcorder use cases. I mean, it is very rare that, in 4k, I will need to zoom beyond 105mm for what I want to capture. Sharpness: its average. Not at all what I would expect from a G class lens. My sigma 30mm lens is much sharper than this lens, however that is not an issue for me at all when I am shooting videos in the max of 4K resolution. You will not notice it in videos, you will notice it for photography. Optical stabilization: It is perfectly fine. About the same stabilization you'd expect in a $600 camcorder. Great for low light situations because f4 struggles at night. Autofocus when I am not doing a pull or push zoom? Awesome. It is extremely quick for photo taking or video shots where focus during the push or pull isn't a concern. Weight: shockingly lightweight. Durability is nice too. I accidentally dropped my camera out of my truck seat onto the concrete and only noticed a minor scuff that almost all came off. In conclusion: If you are thinking about purchasing this lens, keep in mind all that I just mentioned. I would highly recommend only using this for using your camera like a camcorder. It is lightweight and perfect for being the only lens you take while you go out. It is really a jack of all trades, and master of none. I find it to be the lens I keep on my camera most often. I got it used for around $379 and will have to say it is worth every penny. Ignore the G label on this lens because it isn't a high-class lens in any sense, but it is a great piece of glass for the price. The attached photo was taken with the lens at f4 and 27mm. ... show more

  • PERFECT Walking-Around All-Purpose Lens on any of the Sony APS-C bodies PERFECT Walking-Around All-Purpose Lens on any of the Sony APS-C bodies
Style: Camera Lens
I’ve been wanting to update my review of this simply terrific, sterling lens. I’ve had it now for almost a year and it has become my absolute go-to lens. It is wire sharp at all focal lengths (equivalent 27 mm to 158 mm) plus holds f/4.0 throughout its range, making it the perfect walking-around lens for pretty much any purpose you can think of. It is a chunk, big and heavy owing to its impressive range plus f/4.0. It’s actually heavier than the APS-C bodies, but it is so superb in performance that it is THE lens I will have on if I go out with just a body, lens, and spare battery. I have a set of inexpensive but fully automatic extension tubes that couple with the zoom and allow it to be used as a zooming macro. I also have an E-mount Sony 30mm macro which is only marginally better than using the big zoom with extension tubes. I’ve added some new pictures to demonstrate. I would say that for most purposes, if you have only one lens, this one performs so well it replaces a bagful of primes. Yes, it is “only” f/4.0, but the APS-C sensor tolerates some stratospheric ISO. I have used my 18-105 to cover an indoor flag football game at ISO 12,800. Most of the noise was mitigated in Lightroom alone (shooting only raw), and only a few needed Topaz de-noise. I personally think it’s a myth that you must have fast lenses in low light, especially with mirrorless EVF that is bright no matter the speed of the lens. ... show more

  • Well worth it
Style: Camera Lens
This lens is phenomenal. Like most of you, i was torn between this and the Zeiss. I already owned the 18-200mm so I was used to the size, however I was expecting this one to be slightly smaller. It's not. They're almost identical in size. That was surprising. this one is definitely sharper. I rarely go over 105mm anyways so this lens is a "better" lens for me and probably for most people. In fact, if you're one of the few who's torn between this and the 18-200mm, my recommendation is buy this lens and with the money you'll save, buy the 55-210mm for those rare moments. I also own that one and have been very impressed with the results out of a $300 lens. I have GAS. Gear Acquisition Syndrome. I found a great deal on that 55-210 so I jumped on it, especially after noticing a smudge on my 18-200 that I can't get to come off. It may be due for retirement. Something about this lens that I didn't know about until after I started using it, the zoom is as smooth as butter. Definitely helps with videos. I HATED using the 16-50mm kit lens for videos. The zoom was rough and shaky. However this one is so smooth, I love using the zoom. Definitely helps make videos look more professional. Especially since I can keep the F4 across the range. If you do a lot of video, I can't think of a better e-mount lens (under $2000). The lens feels strong and sturdy. Made of great quality, and these G lenses are highly rated. You can't go wrong with this one. For a point of reference, i'm using it on my a6300. ... show more

  • Nice Walk Around Lens for a good price
Style: Camera Lens
I purchased this for a Sony A6000 camera which is a backup camera for my Nikon DSLR cameras. The mirrorless cameras are cool because they are inexpensive and light weight. Anyway......Previously I had a kit lens that came with my backup Sony NEX 5 camera. The range of that lens is 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 so it lacks telephoto capabilities and it is a bit slow at the top end (F5.6). I bought this lens because it is fairly fast at F4 and when the cropping factor of 1.5x is taken into account, it includes a decent telephoto range at 152mm. So far I have tested the lens in low light, bright light and shooting fast moving kids opening gifts at Christmas. I have also had the chance to test the on board flash and the video. I am not much of a video expert but my limited testing came up with some nice low light footage and the auto focus and power zoom worked perfectly. The clarity of the lens seems good and I am actually quite surprised at the overall quality of the lens and the results I get using this lens. I am used to paying much more for high end lenses for my Nikon DSLR but this lens seems to have very good quality. If things change, I will update the review but so far I am very pleased with this lens. ... show more

  • Great price for a really great lens. Perfect for hobbyist. Great price for a really great lens. Perfect for hobbyist.
Style: Camera Lens
I'm no professional photographer, instead, I take photos of my family and just for fun. A hobby photographer is what I refer to myself. For a recent family cruise, I wanted a lens that would be multifunctional, one that could zoom in and out and allow me to walk with just one lens instead of numerous lenses. I have to say that I'm also shooting with the Sony A7RIII. I actually own the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS Lens, but those who own it knows how HEAVY that lens is. It's not your average everyday lens, although it takes amazing photos. However, if you're going to be walking around, that is definitely not the lens to go with. After a lot of research, I decided on this one. It was ½ the price of the Sony FE 24–105 mm F4 G OSS Lens and I really couldn't justify paying that price after comparing photos, and it did not disappoint me. The lens was sharp and I was able to get some great shots. Focusing was spot on and I love the fact that the zoom didn't extend out. I shoot in Aperture priority mode consistently, a few Manual, but would sometimes go on auto (very rare), and always in RAW. No matter which mode I shot in, the shots were spectacular. Do I recommend this lens, I sure do. It definitely the one that you should invest in if you don't want to spend a ton of cash, especially if you're not a professional. You get the range and it won't weigh you or your wallet down. I've attached a few SOC (straight out of camera) shots, all unedited. Once they hit lightroom or photoshop, you can really make them pop. The possibilities are endless with this lens. ... show more
