Top Amazon Reviews

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Sony Lens is generally highly praised by users for its sharp, flawless optics and valuable contribution to both nature and portrait photography. The lens performs excellently, with a few remarks centered on autofocus issues. It is recommended that for the best result, a ring light is used, especially for smaller subjects or in less bright conditions. Some reviewers also suggested that this lens might be a bit heavy for handheld shoots and would function best used with a tripod.

Pros

  • 👏 Superior image quality and color capture.
  • 🌸 Works exceptionally well for macro and portrait photography.
  • ⚙️ Manual/Auto focus switch is appreciated by users.
  • 💪 Users appreciated its robust, well-built structure.

Cons

  • 🥴 Some autofocus issues reported.
  • ⚖️ Might be considered a bit heavy for handheld photography.
  • 💡 Requires good lighting or a ring light for capturing smaller subjects.
  • 💰 Pricey compared to some other models on the market.

Should I Buy It?

Given the product's efficiency in image capturing and robust quality, it can be recommended for purchase, especially for those who engage in macro and portrait photography. Its few drawbacks are worth considering. However, given the overwhelmingly positive response to the lens, it appears to be a very good investment for avid photographers.

  • Awesome lens (if you get one that works)
Style: Lens Only
Edited: Bought this same lens from camera store, dont trust the transport anymore. Worked flawlessly. Picture quality is amazing. Bokeh is very nice and easily achieved. Ring light is necessary if you want to shoot bugs or tiny things unless it's very bright. Still bit scared about the build quality. I've had other sony lenses and never had problems. DMF focus mode (in camera) helps if autofocus is too iffy. I feel that or manual focus is needed for bug shots. Autofocus will suffice for anything bigger or farther away. Original: Just received this sweet macro lens. Hook it ip to 7RM3. Camera display shows "flicker". F number shows --. There's no auto focus. Turning off auto stability. Testing with different focus limits. Nope. Nothing. Happens. Lens doesn't make a sound either. Switch to manual. Also defective. Doesn't focus at all. Oh bummer, like so many 1* reviews here, I've gotten a dud. It was shipped in a original box, looks unopened. Box wrapped in a plastic bag. No extra insulation, bubble wrap. Nothing. Not a conciving way of shipping expensive lenses. Returning as defective and trying another one. Was really hoping getting some bug shots. ... show more

  • As fantastic as advertised!
Style: Lens Only
This lens is everything everyone says it is. Tack sharp, durable build, great features and terrific bokeh. The auto focus hunts a little more than I'd like, even with the limiter switches on. But overall, it's still better than my zooms. The push to lock auto-manual focus ring is an awesome feature though. I wish more modern lenses had this. It has a great DoF and, as I said, the bokeh is creamy smooth with beautiful, round bokeh balls. When using as a portrait lens, you can find no better - great sharpness, color rendering and DoF. When using as a macro, it's a little on the dark side. If working close, like with insects, you will definitely need supplemental light, even in full sunlight. The build quality is superb and the lens feels substantial in your hand - like an old metal Nikon lens. Overall, if you need a razor sharp macro and portrait lens, this is the lens you're looking for! ... show more

  • Amazon (not a 3rd party seller, Amazon itself) sold me a used broken lens as new.
Style: Lens Only
First off, great lens. Fantastic at macro, great for portrait. If you want a Sony lens with stabilization and fast auto focus, this is the right choice. But you can't buy lenses from Amazon anymore. You HAVE to buy lenses through B&H now. I'm not going to give a product less than a 5-star rating just because Amazon (not a 3rd party seller, Amazon itself) sold me a broken and clearly used product as new. People in the photography community know to never buy lenses through Amazon's 3rd party sellers because of the scams (Google it, it's very rampant and there's a few well-known kinds of high-ticket item scams out there through Amazon 3rd party sellers). And I thought that buying new items through Amazon proper would be safe. Nope. Amazon sent me the lens. The body could not talk to the electronics in the lens, and the lens would not even manual focus. I inspected the lens and saw dust on the last lens element, and then checked the first lens element (the lens that faces the sensor), and saw a finger smudge and more dust. I checked online and found that the lens hood and a protective reinforced bag should have came with the lens and it did not. Unfortunately I had a wedding gig coming up so I didn't have that lens available for the job. So that cost me a little bit. In short, GREAT lens. Can't recommend it enough. But you can't buy lenses and other high-ticket photography items through Amazon Prime anymore. They are selling used items as new. ... show more

  • Great lens, but non-existent software support
Style: Lens Only
I purchased this lens for product photography. It is very sharp, as other reviewers can attest. No complaints about the hardware. Where things fall apart is on the firmware / software side. Macro lenses have a very shallow depth of field. To get a good photo of a product (or any other unmoving object), one must use focus bracketing. For the uninitiated, this is where you take a series of photos at varying focal lengths. You then use software like Helicon Focus to do “focus stacking”, i.e. combine all the photos into a single one that is sharp from front to back. Sony makes excellent photography hardware generally but does not seem to get software. There are a number of cameras on the market now that will do focus bracketing in the camera. Some will even do focus stacking in the camera as well, like the Olympus OM-D E-M1. Others, like Nikon and Canon, allow third party software running on Mac or Windows to control the camera and perform focus bracketing that way, including a live view. But Sony, ah Sony. Not only does the A7 series not do focus bracketing, but Sony PREVENTS third party software from controlling the focal length. In other words, Sony will not do focus bracketing NOR will they let anybody else do it. From my perspective, it does not matter how sharp this lens is at any given depth of field -- it’s totally useless to me. I need to be able to take sharp photos from front to back. ... show more
