I did not think I needed yet another remote control because I thought the six-axis had everything it needed for movie playing on the PS3 and, yet, I bought one. There were 2 initial reasons: - my wife was missing a 'magic wand' shaped remote for playing movies - Amazon had it at a great price in one of them lightning deals I ended up using it myself and, in fact, using it for more than just movie playing - see below. But, let's do a quick inventory of features: = It's blue-tooth enabled and, therefore, it's not taking any ports on your PS3. This is probably important for anyone who has a "2-USB ports console". = It's wand-shaped, allowing the non-gamers to control their movie-watching activities while holding a familiar-shaped device in their hand. = It maps ALL the six-axis buttons and performs everything a six-axis would do, except for the joystick features of R3 and L3 (but you do have the push-down or 'click' abilities for them). = 2 AA battery powered (still with the original Sony batteries after 4 months of use) = Includes additional buttons that the movie-only users would expect on a remote such as: + a number pad + eject + red, green, blue, yellow buttons + play, stop, pause + slow(step), scan(left/right), prev/next + display, top menu, pop up menu, return + subtitles, angle, audio What is interesting about this remote is that you can use it for much more than movie-playing. Given that it has all the six-axis buttons, guess what? You can use it, and I do use it to: - surf the web - play music - shop at the PSN store - play certain games such as Sudoku - turn the PS3 on/off when your six-axis controllers are in the charger and I am playing GT5 that is using a racing wheel And, yes, you CAN turn the PS3 on and off with this remote. Turning it on is easy - you simply press the PlayStation button and the PS3 turns itself on. To turn it off, you either go as far to the left on the X-bar and all the way up and press Enter (the turn-off PlayStation icon will be highlighted) or you simply hold the PlayStation button pressed for a few seconds and then select 'yes' and press the X button a couple of times. Overall: I am happy with this peripheral. Yes, it's one more remote control but it's a pretty good one, for the reasons I stated above. _______________________________ Notes - Aug 29, 2009, after 16 months of use I find that I'm using the remote more and more, not only for playing movies but for navigating the XMB and at the PSN Store, also when playing music or slideshows. Due to its very convenient arrows wheel with an 'enter' button in the middle, navigating the PS3 and doing just about anything other than playing games is a lot easier than using the PS3 game controller. Unlike the controller which normally requires two hands to hold, this is basically a one-hand operation where you hold the remote in one hand and operate the wheel with your thumb. And because it's Bluetooth, not IR (Infrared), you don't even need to point it at the PS3. And, one word on battery life. After about 15-16 months of operation, this is probably the third set of batteries so I'd estimate battery life to be about 4-6 months. Not too bad.

I have been needing a controller like this forever. We use the PS3 that is attached to the TV for my pre-k girls in the master suite to stream Netflix and Amazon video and play Blueray movies for the kids. I HATED using the PS3 controller. If the girls touched the controller at all the movie would pause or fast forward or do something I didn't understand. Even getting wrapped up in one of their blankets would cause the controller to make the movie fo berserk. I hated it. Then we got a remote like this for our PS4 and I realized I couldn't live without them and that I absolutely had to get one for the girl's PS3. This remote was easy to set up, easy to use, has lots of functions, and makes watching streaming media and Blueray on the PS3 SO much easier. No more remote mishaps that throw the girls into a tizzy when they accidentally hit it durning their favorite part of Disney's Frozen or the Trolls movie. No more searching desperately for the controller while it's tangled in the blankets and causing all sorts of havoc. It works perfectly so far and has made life much easier when it comes to the girl's entertainment time. Can't comment on durability as I haven't had it that long but if I run into issues I'll definitely update my review.

This is a fantastic add-on to your PS3. Super easy to set up, and if you plan on using your system for watching movies, I would propose classifying it as a must-have. Let me address a couple of silly complaints though: 1. No power off button -- First of all, I believe that it is purposely designed that way. No one wants their playstation to be turned off suddenly in the middle of a game when you accidentally lean on the remote. How much of a disaster would that be? How many negative reviews would THAT get? Secondly, the remote certainly allows you to power off the system. You press the PS button then choose "Power off the system." Have we really reached a point where that garners a genuine complaint? One extra button...yes, we truly have it rough don't we? 2. No lighted buttons/hard to see buttons. -- Did I miss the day that original equipment remotes were affixed with glowing buttons? You see it once in a while, but most (not all, but most) electronics, even high end equipment, come with remotes that do not glow. That type of functionality is usually reserved for third-party universals. Not only that, but the Play, Pause, and Stop buttons are very large and well placed, making it as or perhaps even more functional that a standard DVD player remote. Overall, it has been a wonderful purchase for me, and I can not identify with the complaints I have seen. I will note though, that you should not buy it in the hopes that it will ease your web browsing. The original controller is actually far more useful for this task.

I saw some good reviews, and this was about 5 dollars more at Wal Mart, so I got a great deal on Amazon. We use the playstation for games, but recently we've been using it a lot more for netflix, and blu rays. When watching netflix using the game controller somebody would always bump the little joystick and cause the movie to pause. That doesn't happen with this, and it's much more comfortable to hold in your hand, also every once in a while the controller would die and need to be recharged during the movie. Small irritations, easily fixed with this remote. Also, it is blue tooth so it works without pointing at the playstation. I was worried that it would interfere with our living room playstation, because we have one in our bedroom. We bought the second playstation mostly for netflix/blu ray use. It is so much better than the apple tv, which we returned because it tended to pause during netflix playback. Anyway, you have to pair or link the remote with the playstation from the settings menu. So it only controls the one you set it for, and doesn't interfere with another playstation if you happen to have two. Well worth the small investment.

This remote was a gift from my mother for Christmas, so I've had it and used it for a few months now. This was something I wanted and am so thankful to have. It is a MUST for any PS3 owner and though it has a few flaws, you can't really complain since it's all that's out there for the PS3 right now, besides the game controller. I'd like to point out something I read in one of the reviews here. Someone mentioned that the remote is "heavy" due to the added weight with the 2 AA batteries you need. This remote is by far the lightest of ALL my remotes and I'm not sure what they were comparing it too. Yes, it's obviously heavier than some SMALL remotes... but it's not at all "heavy" by remote control standards. In fact, it's very light and comfortable, in my opinion. I love the feel of the remote. The main bluray/dvd disc buttons and large and clear... of all the remotes I have and use, it's actually the least confusing or cluttered. (You should see my receiver remote, which is also a Sony... I've had it for a couple years and still don't know where everything is at... probably my fault though. I just don't use it as often as I probably should). Getting down to the nitty-gritty... the things I don't like so much. The controller is black on black... meaning black buttons and black remote. Very slick looking and matches the PS3 "style" just fine. However, I find it difficult to see the buttons even in low lighted situations. Meaning, even with the TV light and a lamp on in the room, I have trouble finding the "subtitle" or "audio" buttons that are small in the top section. That could just be my eyes, but I have less trouble with other remotes. Speaking of those buttons in the top section, I have had several instances where I have inadvertently ejected my BluRay disc or DVD while trying to change the audio setting during playback. I like to listen to the truHD or sometimes, director commentary, and thus I go to hit the "audio" button on the remote to change the setting. Well, it's right below and very close to the "eject" button and my big stumpy finger or thumb keeps accidentally ejecting the disc. This doesn't happen that much anymore, but it just happens once in a while if I'm not very careful. (I don't think a remote should mean you have to be careful). I've looked at all my other remotes, and the rest that have "eject" buttons on the remote (which I have always felt was unnecessary to begin with), those buttons are in their own little space on the remote away from the other buttons... perhaps to prevent accidental ejection of the disc. I don't want to open a huge can of worms with this here, but I just really don't like how all those buttons at the top section are the same size/shape and grouped together the way they are. I would prefer that the "subtitle", "audio", "angle" buttons were somewhere closer to the playback controls of the remote (on the bottom) and not grouped together at the top with the number keys or "eject" button. Seems like such a petty thing to complain about, but both of my DVD remotes (Panasonic and Samsung) have those said buttons in the same "zone" as the playback controls. So, this is just me wishing it was closer to what I'm used to with those. Being very picky here... I don't like where the "stop" button is. I wish it was flipped with the "pause" button, but that's just me. I have another remote that is laid out similarly where the "pause" button it right below the "play" button. Oh well... 3 months with this remote and I still keep accidentally stopping the movies as I get a phone call. And with the PS3, you can't really just pick it back up really quick... you have to wait for it to load, skip through the chapters, find the spot you left off on. This really isn't a big issue... just my personal preference and an issue I encounter with the layout. Not docking points for this. Now the last nit-pick thing I have, and it's a biggie to me... depending on how you want to look at it. I don't turn my system off from the back of the console. I just do the normal "Turn Off System" through the game screen and confirm. It goes to "Standby" mode, the green light turns red and I'm done. The biggest problem I have with this remote is that ANY accidental touch or press on the remote will turn the system on. Not just the "PS" button... ANY button. I can't tell you how many times I do something as little as move the remotes or throw a pillow onto my couch... next thing I realize is I accidentally hit the remote and turned my system on. This is something I find myself having to think about anytime I simply TOUCH the remote when I'm cleaning up my living room or organizing, and I don't feel I should have to think about it or be careful about accidentally turning on the system. Even touching the "7" key will turn it on. I don't think it should be like that. That bothers me and I wish it was more or less only possible to turn it on by pressing and holding the "PS" button, the same as the game controller. On the plus side, it's a great remote for navigating through your menus and even playing some games. I've used this BD remote for playing the Jeopardy game that the PS Store sells, which is easier and more manageable than the game controller. You mostly just need to use the directional pad and the center "enter" button. Overall, it's as good as any remote as it's great for what it does regardless of the flaws. I just wish it was easier to see the not-commonly used buttons in the low light. I don't think they need to fix it by making them light up. Maybe white buttons on the black remote would be better or just enough... that would at least make it look less like just a black piece of plastic with some bumps. Seeing the white buttons, even if hard to see labels, would make it easier to remember and see placements of buttons. Like knowing the "audio" button is the one right below "eject" - top left, second one down. That's easy to "feel out" with your hand, I know, but sometimes when you're watching a movie, talking to people or whatever, you just wanna have to work a little less than that. :) I mean, we're spoiled now a days with remote controls and cell phone... things like that. We don't have to do a whole lot... but we have the technology now. We just have to use it and get it right. I will conclude this by saying that I use this more than I use my PS3 game controller when navigating on my PS3. I use the game controller when I play games... but I use this BD remote to navigate through pictures and movies and use when I play Jeopardy. (You cannot use it for Playstation Home). This is a good remote, and since it seems to be the only one available for the PS3, I recommend it, especially for the $20 price. I hope there will be a day down the road where we see a BD remote like this, but with a few tweaks to make it better than this current version. Only a few minor things.

We got the PS3 to play videos and we wanted a good Blu-Ray/DVD up converter player and so we decided to get the PS3 and it's been awesome. Got the PS3 slim and just truly love it. We watch moves a LOT and using the controller was just a pain because you will get the controller, the knobs and next thing you know your an hour in the movie or an hour back. It just starting to be a pain so we got this remote and we love it! since we always had Sony products, like Sony DVD player, TV, sound system. The remotes like never change. still the great remote with everything label out. Got the remote, set it up on the PS3 and got it working in seconds. Love this remote, it's just so much better watching movies on the PS3. This is the must have. I mean it's a remote, it works how it should. Though the PS3 slim doesn't have an eye, so you can use something like the Logitech harmony or something. But there is an USB adapter for the PS3 slim that will make use of the Logitech harmony. This remote does not have an eye, since it is a bluetooth remote, which is actually better since you don't have to point at the ps3. I couldn't watch movies with out this remote. It does the job and does it well.

The main reason I use the PS3 is to watch downloaded movies and TV shows and blurays (gaming comes second)... if your like me then you must get this remote. If you only use PS3 to play games... you don't really need this remote than. Here is a quick pro/con list followed by more of my review: Pro: Great size, shape and finish. Easy to connect to PS3 (read instructions) Fully connect to ps3 without added devices at a cheap price Ideal for the movie watcher Cons: No dedicated power button Battery life is relatively short Not internet user friendly (no joystick to move arrow) Could use a extra button to change screen mode This is my second remote I've bought, one for me and one for a friend... it's a must have if you use the ps3 to play movies that were downloaded or blurays. Eliminates the need to turn on and off the remote controller (to save battery, I know an update has auto turn off to helped this problem) everytime you want to pause skip ahead or what not. It's not the best to search through the internet on the ps3 or to opperate zooming in on pictures... simpley because it doesn't have a joystick to move freely. Major Flaw though!!! If you're like me and have the ps3 in your room and like to leave remotes on your bed in the middle of the night you maybe woken up by the sound of the PS3 turning on. This is because there is no dedicated power button. Instead any button if pushed will turn on the system. I have memerized how to turn the system off without turning on the tv which you learn pretty fast to help fix this problem. I've seen people complain about no backlighting on the remote and small lables... this really doesn't matter. I found that the layout was pretty easy to learn and the labling was just fine. In fact, a lot of the buttons perform the same opperation... like enter, X, and play button all do the same thing. I also saw someone say there is no button to turn it off... just hold down the ps button like you do with the game controller. Added bonus is that you can use it as an extra controller in games (labled the 7th controller), however there is no joystick to move so don't expect too much use. One button that could of been added that is not there... is one to switch viewing modes for movie play back. To switch from full screen, zoom, and normal (ect.), the way to do this is to hit triangle move to the left a couple of icons and hit the tv screen icon. So a single button would have been a nice option. I did find the batteries ran out faster then I expected (a lot faster than normal remotes) but at least you can check batter life by simply pressing the ps button once. It's always connected to the PS3 via bluetooth so what do you expect. I think my batteries last 2-3 months with daily use... maybe nickle-cadium (sp?) batteries will last longer, I just use what is in the closet. I gave this a 5 star rating... because how much easier it has made my life despite its short comings. On a side note, do you ever find it funny they put an eject button on remotes... you still have to get up and remove / insert a disk anyways. Oh well.
