  • Great recorder, but not as durable as older generation of Sony recorders
Size: PX470 - Stereo Recorder
This is my review of the Sony ICD PX470 voice recorder after 11 months (Jun 2020 - May 2021). My overall recommendation is that is a good recorder and worth purchasing however there are a few blemishes that keep it from being ideal. First, with regard to sound quality it is clean and clear and perfect for all of the typical applications of a handheld voice recorder (classroom, meetings, dictation). In this one aspect, this voice recorder is superior to the older model Sony recorders. When you playback your voice will be bright and clear and easily understood. The battery life is excellent. The batteries last so long that I don’t pay attention to how often I change them. I use the recorder each and every day at least once and I change the batteries probably about 4 times per year. The recording time is also excellent. I keep the recording quality set to the highest MP3 setting, because there is no point in ‘throwing away fidelity’ at the source. I could always delete files or make copies to save space. On the device itself there is at least 40 hours of recording available and on a small 16Gb MicroSD card there are about 180 hours available. I have never hit those limits in my time of using recorders, maximum I have maybe used 50-70% so I feel this is plenty for my needs. Now for some of the downsides to the recorder. First the battery compartment is held on by a ribbon and feels flimsy. I sometimes drop the battery. I find that annoying and overall the ergonomics of the device ‘work’ but they are not great. Second, the built in ‘USB’ extender that makes the device behave like a thumb drive is nice in theory, but in practice I don’t like it. When I go to stick the device into my computer the ‘ejector’ slide is on the bottom so I have to reach under to firmly insert the USB into my computer. Frequently, the USB closes back into the device while I’m trying to insert it into my computer. To make matters worse, on newer computers and on the type of computer I am now using there is no USB-B type port so this ‘thumb drive’ extension now requires and adapter. An example would be any Mac computer that uses USB-C only as well as other modern laptop computers. Lastly, I have to go into some detail about the power button because this is what failed on my unit after 9 months of use. The power button is not a clean positive switch. It feels squishy and I suspect it is a low quality component, perhaps even designed to fail. It is hard to tell even when the device is going to start. Sometimes I ‘miss it’ and the device doesn’t power on. To make matters worse, the device takes an extraordinary long time to start! I mean it, if you have an important meeting or lecture, go in with the device already on, or you could miss the start. I have timed the startup at about 20 seconds. It may not sound like a long time, but it is an agonizingly long time for an electronic recorder to start up. My older sony recorder was borderline instant and ready to record in less than a second in a pinch. Unfortunately after not even a year of regular use the power switch on my unit failed. I am very grateful to Sony for promptly recognizing and fixing the issue. They sent me back a brand new recorder without resistance. I did have to get an RMA and ship my old unit and allow a week or two for the process to complete. In that time, I was able to use my older model Sony recorder which is more durable and actually still works pretty well especially for a backup. The replacement device is identical to the previous one as far as I can tell. The power button is equally squishy and I expect it will fail again at some point. Sony now only offers me 90 days of warranty on the replacement unit so I will now have to purchase a new one when this one fails. It’s a good recorder, but at this price point, I would like better quality and durability. As a work around I have set the auto-power down to 5 minutes. I will let the device timeout since the battery life is so outstanding and that will mean I only have to perform half as many actuations of the power switch. Perhaps this will extend the life. I will keep this review updated. ... show more

  • Some Troubles
Size: PX470 - Stereo Recorder
Bought for the Sony brand name and reputation. A good item, quite small, easily inserted into a pocket or smsll corner of briefcase. Instructions seemed convoluted, not as the old style only needing a tape inserted and pressing play or just plain simplicity. My generational lacking by age is a factor as well. Clear sound, battery well cover is attached to device case to prevent loss. Practice needed to get full use. Crest la vie, huh? ... show more

  • Sensitive, accurate and simple to use - but ill-suited to handheld use.
Size: PX470 - Stereo Recorder
Controls were reasonably intuitive - I could immediately record without getting hung up. The sound quality was excellent - and the microphones are exceptionally sensitive. They'll clearly record a normal speaking voice 20' away. BUT, that also means that if you hold the recorder in your hand and try to dictate into it - it'll pick each tiny movement of your fingers on the recorder - loudly. The mics are not well isolated from the case. ... show more

  • Amazing deal!
Size: PX370 - Mono Recorder
This is the second one these I have had. Lost the first one and when looking to replace it , the price was unbeatable compared to a new one. When it arrived it looked like it was brand new. Tested it and works perfectly. I need a voice recorder for my job and this seller did not disappoint with the quality. Just hope I don’t lose this one. ... show more

  • Super handy, easy, intuitive, great record time, excellent qualtiy with extra useful features
Size: PX370 - Mono Recorder
I own two of these, they are so useful. One is for recording speakerphone calls and daily notes, the other is for impromptu music session recordings. The best thing is you can just power it on (it is ready in a few seconds) and press the red record button and you are recording. The audio files can be stored in 3 different bit-rates so you can choose between maximum storage or highest quality. I use the lowest quality for phone calls and notes and the highest for music. It is nice and small so easy to carry around. With the built in 4 gig memory you can get a ridiculous amount of voice-quality recording time, like 190 hours, but you can even add SD storage I think 32 GB. The mic is mono, but you may be able to plug in a stereo mic and make stereo recordings at the two higher bit rates (needs to be verified). If you need a stereo mic, there is a px470 version for more money which also has more features, like more file formats. The px370 records MP3 files. It is very easy to transfer them to a computer, just slide out the USB connector and plug it into a USB slot of your computer. The first time you'll have to hunt for the files in the folder system, then it's easy to drag and drop or copy/paste in Windows. Even the lowest quality audio is very good, making very clear voice recordings. At highest quality, you can make some very good quality music recordings. I plug in a dynamic microphone for quick session recording with my guitar and voice. It is good enough for practice, very decent quality. There is no bluetooth connection, but you can use an audio cable to connect to a powered speaker for amplification. Or you can plug in headphones. I connect to a small Bose speaker by cable for listening to music. The settings give you good control over recording with 3 volume settings for the internal or external microphone (or auto volume control), 3 bit rates, you can turn on-off VOR (voice activated recording). You can set up several folders to record your audio to, although I just use one and backup my files to my computer regularly. The files are named by the date and time of the recording, which is handy so you won't overwrite previously saved files. There are plenty of other file management options you can explore to help you use it as a memo recorder. For me, the basic simplicity, efficient use of memory, small size and battery life is the major appeal. Just turn it on and hit record. Even though phone apps can probably do much of the same functions, having a dedicated recorder means I actually use it rather than dealing with a slippery, touchy phone that isn't handy. I find the px370 very well designed and useful. ... show more
