  • Sounds great and great with a small apartment + complicated home theater and stereo setup!
Honestly, this is the best! I shopped around for a loooooooong time looking for the best sound system for my small (1 bedroom apartment) and I found it! The sound quality is incredible. My boyfriend who urged me to buy a true 6 speaker and sub stereo system now admits that this setup was the best choice for a small space. Also, I have a complicated setup and this system worked when others would not. Instead of a tv I have a project hooked up to apple tv and a bluetooth transmitter rigged on a ceiling mount and projecting to my living room wall. The sound bar sits on bookshelf below the projected screen. It's really discreet and small (which is awesome), but it's not actually white or even off-white for that matter. It's definitely grey (which is not so awesome but do-able). The sub sits under my sofa and total out of site. When the projector/Bluetooth transmitter are on it will automatically pair to the sound bar. The sound bar also has an analogue setting and I can play vinyls from my turntable (using a phono preamp with a 3.5mm to 2RCA cable from turntable to sound bar). Obviously, playing music from my phone via bluetooth to the sound bar is a synch. My only gripe is that the sub is a little weaker than I like when streaming movies. While playing music it is never an issue, so it may just be an AppleTV setting I can adjust. From streaming movies to music from my phone or turntable the sound quality is really, really great! ... show more

  • Big sound, great versatility, and immersive experience from a compact sound bar (...and the woofer THUMPS)
Color: Black
It was time to buy a new sound bar. Our old one was too big and blocked the sensor and a portion of the screen on the new television we bought. When this came up as a Treasure Truck deal, I pulled the trigger and went down to Chelsea to pick it up. It was much heavier than I anticipated it would be, but I got it home and set it up. Not only does it fit much better under the television, but the sound is great! The sound bar is compact, but its sound fills the room. The dialogue is clear and the music is sharp. I didn't have a woofer previously, and I was pleasantly surprised with how much of a difference it makes. The recommended option is to put the woofer under your sofa, and I obliged. It creates a neat, immersive effect that enhances action sequences and intense music. The sound system also syncs via blu tooth with a user-friendly app (Music Center), so I can easily play music from my phone on the system. I also use the app to control volume and settings on the system, which is nice when I can't locate the remote. Bottom line: Great sound, lots of features, reasonable price. Makes the home movie experience truly enjoyable. ... show more

  • Good overall, but be aware of the limits of the optical input (no HDMI input)
Color: Black
I give this four stars as for me it’s sort of a weird blend of five stars and three stars. Five stars because it arrived faster than I expected (okay, not really relevant), works just as advertised, the sound is great to my ears (note that I’m no kind of audiophile, however), documentation is substantially more than one typically gets these days, packaging was careful so the unit arrived undamaged, and setup was easy with one exception. The Bluetooth works fine for me, both when paired with my phone and with a second generation echo dot. The key thing that drops it to three stars for me is the lack of an HDMI input. I guess this is very unfair of me in a way, because if you do a little research, it’s very clear that it only has optical and ‘analog’ inputs. The analog input is of no interest to me, and I doubt that you’ll want to use it either unless forced to, so basically --- optical is the only option. I have two issues with the optical input, that --- sadly --- I was unaware of until I bought this unit and set it up. First, with an HDMI input, attached to an HDMI ARC input to my TV (which I DO have available), I would be able to control the soundbar from my TV (via the HDMI-CEC standard). I’m using Amazon’s Fire Cube to control things, and while the cube seems to control devices well overall, for some reason it’s not doing such a good job with this sound bar. I will continue to tinker, but what really confuses me still is that controlling volume and mute through the Fire TV remote only seems to work in an IR (line of sight) manner, so that I have to sort of disjoint my shoulder from where I sit to raise my hand high enough to get it to turn the sound up or down or mute/unmute --- which makes no sense to me given my understanding of how the cube works. Anyway, I think this would all work more easily and reliably with an (up-to-date) HDMI input on the soundbar, which again --- this unit lacks. Second, of the various digital sound standards available today, optical connections only support Dolby digital [EX] and DTS [ES]. Not, as I understand it, Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD or PCM. Even more confusing, it looks like you’ll get sound out if you specify one of the unsupported formats, but … ? I’m not educated on this stuff and don’t want to be, but it makes setup more complicated, trying to figure out which format to select, based on how your TV or other device might describe the option. I don’t KNOW if I can tell it to ‘auto-detect’. Does information flow both ways on an optical cable? I don’t WANT to be this much of an expert on this topic, I just want the danged thing to work easily and well. For that, too, I think that an up-to-date HDMI input is needed. Finally, I got the ‘voice lag’ problem that some others have described. This is where you’re watching, say, your local news but the mouths don’t sync with the dialog exactly so that it feels like you’re watching a dubbed foreign film. This apparently doesn’t bother everyone, but it bugs me, so I tinkered a lot and based on I don’t remember which settings finally got it so the lag is now so small that I have to watch very closely to see that it’s still there. Good enough, but a real PITA in setting up. Why don’t I just return this unit and get one with an HDMI input instead? Form factor. My new 43” TV sets low so that a sound bar much over 2” tall would block part of the screen. There ARE other soundbars that sit low like this one, but my wife and I both agreed that it would be nice if the soundbar sat BETWEEN the TV stand support legs/feet, so that it can be tucked right up against the base of the TV. On my 43” TV, the supports are placed such that I’ve got maybe 26” or perhaps 28” between them. Also, the slim design of the subwoofer (which btw for me seems to provide excellent bass) --- it’s ideally shaped to fit standing upright in a space near to the TV on the floor. So I’ll live with the limited input choice due to the just-right-for-me form factor. Finally, let me say that since the sound bar and the subwoofer are designed to be placed in different parts of the room, I think it would be wonderful if Sony were to have offered the option to mix and match the colors of the pieces. For me, it would have been ideal if I could have bought the black sound bar, accompanied by a white subwoofer, which then would have blended in a lot better with the adjacent white wall. ... show more

  • EXCELLENT MINI SOUND SYSTEM!
Color: Black
All our flat screen TVs have their speakers at the back. We really need a system to bring the TV sound to the front. With the Startup Guide, it is surprisingly easy to install and set up this compact Sony system that doesn’t take up much space. The Operating Instructions are also easy to understand. We have many options to select: TV, Bluetooth, USB, Analog, Movie, Music. The sound is excellent, almost like surround sound. Being able to adjust the volume of the bass sound on the subwoofer when we listen to music helps us enjoy it more. Besides, when we watch the news, we can make dialogs clearer by setting the Voice mode to on. This wireless system is very convenient. We can put the subwoofer anywhere in the room, even under a sofa (by turning Sofa mode on). The box includes all what is necessary in the setting up. No need to buy anything else. I’ve been enjoying this system for one week. I love it and I highly recommend it to everybody, especially for not-too-big rooms. Sony is a brand we can trust. ... show more

  • Excellent sound, compact, and convenient.
Color: Black
Used this as a replacement for the audio on my Samsung TV. The sound is EXCELLENT. It's audible and intelligible at low volumes so you don't always feel like you're in a theater or disturbing the person in the next room. And the bass and surround picks up at louder volumes for when you want the immersive experience. It's smaller and has a low profile and the subwoofer is slim enough to not be noticeable even if you don't use the under sofa installation. The instant NFC connection is a huge plus and the app allows you to control all the functions from your phone. The unit can also be controlled from the Xfinity x1 remote (and so I assume other universal remotes) ... show more

  • Looks fantastic and part of the furniture
Looks fantastic and part of the furniture, the optical way in for the sound is working great. No problems whatsoever. The setup was 5 minutes at the most: 2 minutes for unpacking, 3 minutes for connecting optical cable on TV cause it is hanging on the wall. The hearing modes for Audio like Clear Audio, Movie/Music and have very noticeable difference between them so you can always clear up the audio on movies and files with disproportionate audio sequences like loud background noise but quite speech. I found out he combination of Clear Voice + Voice works best on these and actually do the job vs other devices i have heard like Klipsch soundbar. The biggest plus for me was the way it looks on furniture like on expensive sideboard, i got the white colored one and it blends in very well. ... show more

  • Great sound, poor connection
Color: Black
The speaker is fine, the sound of the speaker is great. I have it hooked up to my TV and use it for a combination of TV sound & bluetooth speaker. I docked two stars because of two things - the bluetooth connection is very poor. It breaks up if I bring the phone further than a few feet or if I'm browsing any other app while listening. And two, more often than not I have to manually turn the subwoofer off and on again when turning on the unit. I'm not sure if it can't make the connection to the speaker on its own or always needs the power flipped independently of the speaker but I imagine if this was intentional there would be a power button for the subwoofer on the remote. Instead I have to get on the floor and flip the power switch on the subwoofer itself. When it works, its a great speaker. Again, I love the sound and it adds a lot to the sound experience in movies but it needs some nursing to work and it detracts from my use of it. Wish it wasn't the case. ... show more

  • Totally underwhelming...If you want something that feels well balanced and properly tuned, keep looking.
Color: Black
I tried really hard to like this soundbar, but the more I tried to like it, the more I began to hate it. At first when watching a movie with lots of action and big explosions, it seemed powerful, impressive. But as the movie went on I found that in quieter calmer scenes the sound fell flat. The whole system was being carried by bass and as things calmed down the inadequacy of the bar speakers became painfully obvious and that bass began to poke through very unnaturally. Random bumps of bass would awkwardly make their presence known, seemingly unaware that their presence was not needed. I tried shutting the sub off completely and turning the volume up to see if the sub was simply overpowering the other speakers... But the soundbar audio, unaccompanied by the subwoofer was hollow, lifeless. I had a hard time telling if my TV hadn't just reverted to it's built-in "complimentary" speakers. I tried several different audio modes...they all sounded the same. I bought the system on an impulse, and as such I worked hard at first to overlook some of the other more "trivial" idiosyncrasies. However, in light of the audio shortcomings, several other details began to infuriate me. First there was no mounting bracket (I could let this slide). Second, the very limited selection of audio modes/features were poorly explained and a good portion we're geared towards music via Bluetooth audio. I already have 5 other Bluetooth audio speakers in my house for music...I don't need my TV speakers to waste half of their features on music settings that I will never use. Finally, as others have mentioned, changing settings on this thing is RIDIC... They all involve holding different buttons down for various amounts of time and waiting for more random flashes of lights on the bar which require a decoder ring to decipher. Even setting the volume to a specific level is a guessing game since the only indicator is random meaningless flashes on the bar. I would say that if you are just looking for something you can crank the volume up to 11 on (good luck figuring out when you are getting close..) and watching Jack Reacher, this may be the soundbar for you. If you want something that can actually play movie audio that feels well balanced and properly tuned, keep looking. ... show more
