  • Must have lens for your Sony FE cameras
If you use a current Sony mirrorless, full frame camera, this lens should be part of your collection. Part of the G series of lens, it is designed to work best with the current generation of Sony mirrorless full format cameras. For its apparent size, the lens is surprisingly light weight and can be easily hand held, although it comes with a collar designed for mounting via a tripod or monopod use. Very responsive the zoom and manual focus are responsive and simple to use. Being a prime lens, it is a fixed size vs other telephoto zoom. At F4 it works just fine with low light conditions, although a newer F2.8 variant is now available if you want the latest, greatest version. For most photographers, the F4 is more than enough. The lens also offers external switch options for full manual focus, longer focus options, steady shot - redundant but welcome as this is now incorporated into the camera body, two shooting modes and easily reached focus hold buttons. For those who haven't used a high-level lens before there is a learning curve here that will require experience and practice to enable you to get the most out of the lens. The only reason for the lower grade there. Closer objects or those in the background can be blurred as the lens locks onto your main image. If you are unaware of unfamiliar with this effect, it will take you by surprise. But that's more on the photographer than the lens as photos at the point of focus are sharp and very detailed. The lens arrived quickly and with an unexpected and very welcome bonus - a high quality carrying bag. As for the Amazon refurbishment, if they hadn't said anything I would never have known. The lens looks new. Responds like new. Performs like new. So far as I'm concerned, it is just as good as new. If you want to save a few dollars, you can purchase with confidence. ... show more

  • Finally….
The 70-200 was on my Wish List for quite some time and I’m happy I did make this purchase now as the price has dropped. It arrived in the original packing as it should be and one can see that the lens is brand new. As I shoot mostly “stills” and portraits outside I do not need the 2.8 version and the great price difference for on stop less made my decision easy. I also did not like that the 2.8 has no longer the internal zoom which I think is a tremendous advantage in 4.0 My other mostly used lens I own are the Sigma 24-70 Art, the Viltrox 85mm and the Tamir 28-200 which going to sell now as with the new Sony and the Sigme I have what I need to be flexible in most situations. I see a lot of comments recommending mostly lenses with the lowest f stop available which is in my opinion an overkill. Sure, if one only shoots in low light it might be reason. My question is always: what can I do with a 1.8 lens that I can not do with a 2.8? Well I’m looking forward to my next beach outdoor shooting with my new Sony lens ... show more

  • Initial Test
Advertised as a "Renewed" product, the lens was in excellent/like new condition. Front and rear elements were clear of scratches, the body was as new. Maybe not surprising, the lens arrived in the provided pouch (also in like new condition), but no original box, warranty, or user guide - all normally provided in a new product. I ran a series of initial tests and found that images (at 100%) were very slightly soft, center to edge, at f/4, at both ends of the zoom range, sharp at f/5.6 and above. Except at f/4, overall image quality was excellent and even f/4 is good at normal viewing resolutions. Autofocus seemed to work well. I will do some more extensive testing soon and report the results in an update to this review. ... show more

  • Lighter and Smaller than the 2.8 model, but JUST as SHARP!
So much lighter then the 2.8 model, besides being less expensive. F4 is plenty with our modern cameras, and F4 keeps the background plenty soft, with my full frame Sony camera.

  • Great buy
Great budget portrait lens, the f4 is perfect for group shots for events and helps with its zoom versatility and focus

  • Love... ish
There's a lot to love about this lens, but there's no autofocus and the image stabilization is non-existent. Useless handheld or with a mono-pod, but perfect with a tripod.
