  • Pretty Impressive
Style: CM 5310 Silence Color: Tayberry Red
I did a ton of research into "semi-automatic" and "fully automatic" coffee machines before finally deciding on this Miele. Very glad I opted for fully automatic, as it turns out there is very little that is actually automatic about semi-automatic machines. This machine does it all at the touch of a button, once you fill the water and bean reservoirs (and place the pipette in some milk, if desired). In terms of convenience and flexibility, it cannot be beat. You can make a wide variety of espresso-style beverages (and even plain coffee), and each is customizable in terms of total liquid volume, amount of coffee, and water temperature. Your settings are retained in memory. You can also adjust the grind size to one of six different settings. We usually use the smallest or second-smallest grind as we prefer fine grinds for pour-over as well (seems like you get a bit more bang for your unit volume of whole beans). You can even use pre-ground coffee in a separate compartment, although that kind of defeats the purpose of having a built-in grinder. With this machine, my wife prefers the Americano, while I usually make myself a Latte Machiatto and stir in a little sugar before drinking. The instructions say never to use any milk other than whole cow milk; I tried mac nut milk one time and it tasted too toasted, almost like burnt marzipan. So I stick with whole milk and the dairy aspect is as good as -- if not better than -- any store-bought latte. The beverages come out extremely hot. I experimented with different temperature settings (mostly trying to optimize flavor), and even the lowest setting comes out pretty piping hot. The machine comes with some factory test coffee still in it -- you will want to discard it and make (and dump) several of your own beverages before trying to drink (the nearly black factory coffee is extremely roasted and tastes/smells basically like charcoal). We bought this machine originally to use a five pound bag of high quality, lightly roasted unground beans that were sent us by mistake (we usually order ground coffee). It is very important to use high-quality beans (meaning on the dry side, and not oily). Now that we have had some time to compare the same exact coffee made using ground pour-over (our long-time method) versus whole bean using this machine, it turns out that pour-over just tastes better. The flavor is more complex and robust -- probably because the water passes very slowly through the ground coffee (and cools a bit in the process), whereas this machine passes extremely hot water quickly through a "puck" that it creates after grinding whole beans. The entire process takes maybe a minute (and is rather loud -- the "Silence" part of the machine's name is true only when it is not running). The bean and water reservoirs are not especially large, so you will need to refill them pretty frequently (particularly the water reservoir -- which you would want to replace daily anyway). The machine does a lot of self-cleaning maintenance which also uses some water, so you will need to empty the puck and water drainage compartments pretty often as well. It can be a bit messy/sloppy, depending on your hand balance. I removed the brew unit one time and rinsed it without prompting (mostly just curious what it looked like and whether it would be difficult -- it wasn't). After nearly two months of regular use, we have not yet needed to use any special cleaning or descaling tablets (a few are included in the box). I use Brita filtered water to fill the reservoir, not tap water. In short, if convenience and flexibility are your top priorities, and you have non-oily whole beans handy, this machine should be on your short list of potential automatic coffee machines. But if you want optimal flavor from your ground coffee (particularly lighter roasts), pour-over is still a better way to go. ... show more

  • We loved it until it broke. Customer service is lacking.
Style: CM 5510 Silence Color: AluSilver Metallic Finish
We received the requested packing material and returned the coffee machine on 27 May 2023. Our UPS tracking information indicates it was received on 6 Jun 2023, but we have not received any information on the repair or when it will be returned to us. We were promised to have it back in two days. It has been two weeks. I called the service number, but I could not understand the young lady trying to speak with me. ... show more

  • An excellent machine overall - best for single households
Style: CM 5300 Color: Obsidian Black
Overall I'm very pleased with my 5300. Let's look at the pros and cons: Pros: Makes excellent drinks - I particularly like cappuccinos and this machine can consistently churn out excellent ones. Thoughtfully designed - there are many nice touches - from the way the machine automatically requests to wash the milk pipework after you make a milk drink, to the way it walks you through step by step when cleaning is required. Cons: The water reservoir on the 5300 is relatively small, which means you will be refilling it frequently. Because it is frequently rinsing itself (helping with maintenance) it uses more water than you might expect. That and the fact that it doesn't have user profiles means that this might not be a good choice if you have more than one coffee drinker in the household (I'm single, so it's been fine for me, but I could see that it could be annoying with more people using the machine). Consider stepping up to the 6150 or 6350 if this will be used by multiple people. Although it doesn't have user profiles, you can customize the drinks and it will save your adjustments. You just can't customize them for different people. Also, it doesn't have a touch screen, which seems like a bit of a throw back in this day and age. Not an issue for me, but may be frustrating for some users. Other Info: Not a pro or con, but it's worth checking your water hardness when you set this machine up. The machine arrives from the factory assuming you have very hard water (meaning it will ask to descale more frequently). That's probably the right default choice, but I was surprised when it asked to descale after less than a month of use. I got a test kit and confirmed that I have soft water so I changed that setting and I expect I won't have to descale now for quite some time. This machine doesn't come with a milk carafe. You can just dunk the milk pipework into a bottle of milk (or glass) but I ended up purchasing the Míele glass carafe from their website for $50 to have a nicer milk experience. (The top of the line 6350 comes with a fancy insulated stainless steel milk carafe - something to consider when choosing which model to get). Like all super-automatic machines, it requires more maintenance than standard coffee makers. I came from a Nespresso, so that was a bit of a surprise. Per the owner's manual recommendation, I clean the milk pipework weekly (using the Míele milk cleaning tablets - you can buy on Amazon), and rinse the brew unit and coffee dispense unit weekly as well. I also run the drip try and grounds collector through my dishwasher weekly as well. Again, not a big deal, but if this is your first super-automatic it may be a surprise. Be sure to avoid using flavored or oily beans as they can damage the machine. I use Lavazza espresso roast from Costco and have gotten good results. Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase. This would be 5 stars except for the relatively small water reservoir - something you can fix by going for either the 6150 or 6350 models. ... show more
