  • A Compact Marvel in Lens Technology
Style: SEL40F25G
I recently purchased the Sony FE 40mm F2.5 G lens and it has exceeded all my expectations. Its ultra-compact design, weighing just 173g, makes it incredibly convenient for both professional and recreational photography. The high-quality G Lens optical design with three aspherical elements ensures impeccable sharpness and corner-to-corner resolution, a true testament to Sony's craftsmanship. The F2.5 aperture is perfect for low-light conditions, providing excellent light gathering capabilities. The depth of field is shallow and artistic, with the 7-blade circular aperture contributing to a beautifully natural bokeh. This feature makes it an ideal lens for portrait photography. Image quality is astounding. The aspherical elements counter various aberrations, maintaining high-resolution performance even at wide apertures. The defocused light sources are perfectly round, adding an aesthetic quality to my shots. The autofocus, powered by two linear motors, is fast and precise, a crucial factor when tracking moving subjects. The Linear Response MF is particularly impressive, providing immediate and precise control, essential for both stills and video. Overall, the Sony FE 40mm F2.5 G lens is a stellar combination of portability, performance, and quality. It's a versatile lens that has become an indispensable part of my photography kit. Highly recommended for those who value quality and versatility in a compact form. ... show more

  • A Wonderful Lens
Style: SEL40F25G
A phenomenal lens for street photography and more. Even does a fine job of taking very close up pictures as well. Love this lens. Easy to pack and very light. Fast enough at /f2.5.

  • Sharp Lens with Pleasing Bokeh
Style: SEL40F25G
Sony designed a high-quality, color-accurate but not clinical, fast 2.5 aperture, compact 40mm lens. The color rendition of the final images has this pleasing contrast that definitely doesn't have a character but isn't exactly clinical. It's more of a workhorse lens for travel photos or paid gigs. The bokeh is pleasant while shooting wide open, and I overall really enjoyed using this lens while visiting Mexico. ... show more

  • Solid performer and very nice light/compact form factor
Style: SEL40F25G
40mm is my favorite focal length for a prime, it's a nice happy medium between 35 and 50. I often find 35mm too wide, and 50mm too narrow, so the 40mm hits a nice sweet spot which makes it very versatile (imo). Image quality is very good, not quite newer GM level, but close on any sensor ~42-50mp range and lower. 60mp does push it a bit past it's comfort zone, but still very usable and most would not know it unless they really pixel peep and/or compare to the bigger and more expensive GM/II lenses. Overall, very happy with the lens, I wish I would have bought it sooner. Side note: I do wish that Sony made a really good 40mm f/1.4 GM as well, but even if they did, I'd probably still want this lens. It's super nice to have something this small and light. Now if Sony would make an actually small/light full frame camera I could use this lens on that would be great (the current "compact" Sony's are too big and overpriced..) ... show more

  • Compact lens. Compact package Compact lens. Compact package
Style: SEL40F25G
I really wanted this lens, mainly because I went with mirrorless for size, among other things. And this pairs so nicely with my a7c. I’ve owned a Samyang 35mm f2.8 for a few months now. It’s small and compact, but probably a tad too small and for some reason I can’t quite explain, I haven’t really loved the pictures. Maybe just not as much as I had hoped. So I decided to upgrade and naturally spend 3 times the money for something .23 times better. Let’s be honest for just a sec. isn’t that what photography is usually all about? Oh well. I just took it out the box, slapped it on my a7c and it looks beautiful. Yes the hood is a bit awkward but that’s expected, they wanted it to be compact so I’m ok with it. The aperture ring is solid. It’s not gonna move around accidentally. I was quite worried about that. It feels a lot like my 20mm f1.8 but half the size. And it’s not as small as I was imagining, but it’s still great. Prob the perfect size. I’ve taken just a few pictures so far and it’s stunning. I can def notice the difference from my samyang. Auto focus is superb. Man I love Sony mirrorless. I struggled for a month decided if I should move forward with this lens. I really wanted a 35mm (trying to sell my Samyang right now). But I do also own a 28mmf2 so I think between that lens and this one (40mm) I’m good. Im not a pro. Just a major hobby I’ve invested way too much money in. So take it with a grain a salt but I felt there should be a review on Amazon just in case you can’t find any of the 16 reviews online or 16 YouTube reviews on this lens. Overall it’s tough to justify if you have a 35mm you love. Like a sigma f2 (ugh. I ended up picking this one over that one and I hope I don’t regret it) or the Sony 1.8 or 1.4. I guess if you really want something slightly more compact than those. Or if you just don’t own a 35mm maybe this one is a good alternative for you. (Again if you truly like the idea of a solid compact lens). For reference I’m able to fit it with my camera in my 5L peak design bag along with my 28mmF2 and my tamron 70-180. I always appreciate people providing that type of info so I hope someone else can appreciate this. I’d also easily be able to include my 55mm zeiss and 20mm f1.8 if I remove the tamron. Just FYI. It’s quite convenient to have a compact package. Not saying all my packages are compact. But not denying it either. ... show more

  • Good things do come in small packages
Style: SEL40F25G
Nice travel lens for my A7C ii. It has excellent sharpness and depth of field regardless of size actually. 40mm is a fun focal length putting it close to 35mm. My only gripe is the LoCA is very bad in some situations, to point it may be difficult to save the pic in light room. Most cases it works well though. Great to pair with the 24mm, perfect travel companion. ... show more

My favorite lens for everyday carry. This lens never leaves my A7CII. I use this for travelling and for content creation. Very fast focus and the images are really crisp.

I love this lens. It’s very light and compact. It produces great images. It’s great for travel and a general walk around lens. I pair it with my Sony A7C2.
