Features

  • The first*6 G MasterTM standard zoom with a constant F2 aperture is ideal for portraits and a wide range of other subjects. Sharpness and contrast rival prime lens quality*1, while F2 brightness, unrivalled AF, a versatile zoom range, and a compact, lightweight design offer extraordinary creative scope for stills and movies.
  • Advanced design and optical simulation result in zoom quality that rivals prime lenses*1. Large elements including three XA (extreme aspherical) elements manufactured using original techniques ensure high corner-to-corner resolution at F2 throughout the zoom range. Floating focus allows close focus down to 0.38 m/1.25 ft throughout the zoom range.
  • An F2 max. aperture and G Master optics deliver exquisite, soft bokeh for deep, dimensional images. Spherical aberration is carefully controlled for ideal resolution/bokeh balance, and a new 11-blade circular aperture unit helps to deliver gorgeous ball bokeh. Onion-ring bokeh and color bleeding are effectively suppressed for refined image quality.
  • This versatile standard zoom lens delivers image quality that rivals prime lenses plus amazing AF. Innovative optics and XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors make all of this fit in a constant F2 zoom that is only 92.9 x 139.8 mm (3-3/4 x 5-5/8) and weighs just 918 g (32.4 oz). Stress-free shooting with all the advantages of zoom and no compromise on image quality.
  • Four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors and the latest algorithm precisely control the large F2 focus group. Reliable focus tracking and instant response are essential at weddings or sports events where every frame counts. This lens is fully compatible with the 120 fps*2 burst capability of the 9 III, and tracking continues even while zooming.

  • Wow! Fantastic Lens!
I really can't say enough good things about this lens, and as a Sony shooter, I've been eagerly awaiting its release ever since Canon came out with their own 28-70mm f/2 lens. I only received my copy yesterday, but I'm already in love with it. The 28-70mm focal range is very key for flexible, ready-for-anything indoor shooting. I have quite a few GM lenses, both zoom and prime, and I pull all of them out situationally, but (until now) the lens that lived on my camera most of the time was the f/2.8 24-70mm GM ii. This 28-70 f/2 GM blows it away. The biggest gain comes in getting access to a f/2 aperture instead of f/2.8. For those who are into math, the amount of light let in is inversely proportional to the square of the f-stop. That means that the f/2 lens lets in 49/25ths as much light. In other words, this lens collects essentially twice as much light as an f/2.8. That is simply fantastic for low-light or medium-light scenarios. There's just no substitute for more light. You can shoot at lower ISO for less noise, or faster shutter speeds for less motion artifacts, or a combination of both. As an added bonus, having that wide aperture lets you get prime-like subject separation, blurring out the background for portrait-type photography. I've loved the look of the photos I've taken at f/2 on this lens. The subjects are crisp, the lack of noise is excellent, and the background is some of the creamiest, smoothest bokeh I've ever seen. However, even at f/2.8 and smaller apertures, I feel like the lens out-performs my 24-70. I haven't done a rigorous comparison--this is just a gestalt feel--but my f/2 lens seems to provide tack sharp, count-the-eyelashes clarity in a way the 24-70 didn't, and the bokeh is just beautiful. Also, the fact that this new lens adds stabilization is HUGE. I see a real, noticeable difference in handheld shots compared against my unstabalized 24-70gm. (Also, the fact that the lens is a little bit heavier can help with avoiding camera shake too, just thanks to Newton's laws and good 'ole inertia.) As far as size and weight go--and you can easily look up the exact specs on this--it isn't a small lens, but it isn't as big as you would expect. (It's both smaller and lighter than Canon's version.) In particular, it is deceptively light for its size. It's very comparable to the 135 gm lens. The f/2 is just a tiny bit larger, but it is actually a few ounces lighter. The only downside of this lens is the price. It is definitely the most expensive lens in my kit. However, it is the center slice of that "holy trinity" of zoom lenses; it is the exact focal range usually found on that first "kit lens" you get when you get your first full frame camera; it is a lens you will use A LOT. So for me, that makes it worth it. Happy shooting! For a detailed, very rigorous assessment of this lens, I highly recommend Dustin Abbott's review, which you can google. He is extremely thorough on all the equipment he reviews. ... show more

  • Believe the hype. This lens is brilliant.
Perfect for event, wedding, or general photography. This lens is large in the hand but so light. I can still shoot one handed with this, believe it or not. The focus falloff is stellar, and the color rendition is superb. It can’t replace a f/1.2 or f/1.4 prime, but the difference is so minimal in 95% of the use cases that you or your client will not know the difference. It is absolutely a masterpiece of a lens, and the versatility makes the price a bit more palatable. Especially if you were considering it as an alternative to a set of fast primes. If you want that shallow depth of field, fast primes look, but shoot in a way that switching primes isn’t really an option, this is the absolute only option. Canon makes one too, but it’s bigger, heavier, and just as expensive. This one is even worth getting into the Sony system for on its own if you haven’t chosen a platform yet. ... show more

  • Made really well, but was heavy
I returned this lens as it was too heavy. Did not get a chance to use it. May well be a 5 star item if you can stand the weight.

  • The king of street and travel The king of street and travel
Quite possibly the greatest general zoom lens ever made. I have the 24-70 GM and that is a fantastic lens. Was the greatest. This one is perfect. My purposes are low light street and generally my biggest challenges are light for what I like to shoot. This thing is an animal keeping my ISO low and shutter fast plus the IBIS on my A9iii… killer combo. Insanely fast auto focus. If you shoot in low light or demand clear low ISO images you can’t beat this for having 28-70. The 24-70 gm 2 however is perfect if you do a lot of daylight or need to get closer to your subjects- I would use that. But this f2… I’ll take the slight size and weight penalty on a lens I can carry 24/7 and be ready anytime. Its sharper and faster in every way. ... show more

  • SAVE YOUR MONEY! SAVE YOUR MONEY!
I had issues at 28-35 mm with this lens. I wanted an exchange but I didn’t see that option and that is why I will be giving it that star. Those wide shots are total trash if the lens isn’t focused right. I had it for 10 days and tried running it on different events but anything below 40mm was absolutely a waste of shooting. And with that being said that means its not versatile, has last nearly half its value and its a pain in the a$$ to use. The only way I would see myself changing my mind is Sony offering a replacement piece. Sadly I returned it already and the price has already gone up 300 dollars. If it was a piece of trash at 2800, it’s a piece of trash at 3100. Sony decided to dable into a space it had no business being in. I might’ve gotten a lemon item but me and some other YouTubers will be putting out our public review in a week. Sadly all Sony wanted was to offer to take in with warranty and that would first void any sort of return happening, second void the possibility of making this review as honest as possible and third they sent me a BS email redirect me to something that didn’t have anything to do with my lens. Somy not only needs to fix their product but their customer service because it was until I had reach out through amazon that the line was “open” for me to get a hold of a representative and when I did non of the goofballs understood my issue. I write this review not out of hate but out feeling scammed for the money. I paid upfront for a product, that left me with a bad taste. Prices shot up 300 dollars, their customer service is awful and all I was left with was with my money back. I use all Sony products on my cameras and this one has been a far miss. By the way this review was made with FX3 and A7iv and Zv-e1 so when I say this lens was worthless its not just backed by one camera but 3 and comparing it to other Sony lenses and third party ones as well (sigma and tamaron) i’ll be waiting for their version and happily buy their instead of this garbage and for-sure at a better price point. I will not make an update to this review unless sony has 1) offered a replacement that works fine 2) left at the same price point By the way I don’t want a discount. I believe in paying the same as every other consumer but I also expect to be treated fairly as such. From me a 1/5 stars. The only reason why it’s not a 0/5 its cause at least it functions at 40-70mm but at 3100 NOW. I’ll gladly get a 3rd party lens and keep 2k in my pocket. Sorry Sony you have solidified your tombstone from my pocket. Here is a photo of all 3 of my cameras as proof that I am not out here spreading lies and me at a shoot with it (covering my face for privacy) ... show more

  • Excellent picture quality (can replace primes), very fast, but heavy, bulky and expensive
It's almost perfect, after several comparison I was able to replace my both primes (Sony 35mm/F1.4 and 50mm/F1.4) without any degradation in sharpness, color rendition, quality, etc. Now, any time I go out I carry this one (for late afternoon/night pics) and my trusty Tamron 28-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD (day pics). Why 4 and not 5? Is heavy and bulky and very expensive ... show more
