I took this on a month long overseas trip. And I've used it around my workshop to make videos. GOOD: The flip up display for use from in front of the camera is great. The video quality is good, and so is the picture quality PROVIDED there's enough light. There are a zillion options to tweak the shots, I'm sure I've only scraped the surface with them. The zoom is pretty amazing and the auto-stabilization works really well. The thing is really tiny and convenient to move around. NOT SO GOOD: The low-light capabilities are pretty atrocious to be honest, and this is widely reported in other reviews and I knew this before I bought it. There's occasions when it struggles to focus even in good light but that's autofocus for you. It does go through batteries, on average I used 3 a day when traveling, just taking happy snaps of things I saw. TERRIBLE : The wireless/phone interface transfer stuff is truly 18th century and Sony should be embarrassed by it. Without any doubt the only real way to transfer stuff from the camera is to yank out the memory card and plug it into a laptop. I'm glad I bought a huge memory card because if I'd had to manage "remaining shots" on my trip by transferring to my phone it would have been a nightmare. SUMMARY: This is a highly functional, portable camera with good imaging quality and amazing zoom capabilities. Just don't expect to use it at night, without doubt your phone will do a better job. ... show more

I purchased this just before taking a trip to Maine and Canada and was absolutely thrilled with the results. It’s quick, has an amazing zoom, and takes great pictures. It’s replaced a year old, large RX10V IV Sony camera and an older Sony NXR and I’m convinced delivers equally good photos. The two things I’m not thrilled with is the interface with Apple products....just not intuitive; and the second is that it doesn’t appear to have the same ability to download Sony software to enhance the photography options and experience.     • good all purpose, but has weaknesses
My first order of the HX99 was bad. Volume/sound didn’t playback, grip fell off. That one was returned back to seller. The 2nd one I ordered from eBay. This camera is good/ok at many things just not great at anything. I’ve own/owned a bunch of Sony full frame, APS-C, and 1” Sony cameras. For what this is, a 1/2.3” sensor, which is basically slightly bigger than cellphone and the size of a GoPro sensor it gives you a ton of flexibility. it’s very much like the unloved full frame Sony lens 24-240 F3.5-6.3 which I thought I would hate given that I own G Master lenses. Don’t neglect the benefit of a pocket sized, 24-720 zoom range, with a selfie screen. It’s a combination of GoPro video quality, FDR-X3000’level of stabilization at 1080p 60fps, the contrast based autofocus and face detect for this class of camera is by itself is way better than iPhone, and will crush any infinity focused based action camera like GoPro, Yi, etc. It’s versatile and the user will have more control over its setting than action camera and cellphone. You’ll get decent bokeh with compression only as the lens a slow F3.5 on the wide end. For Vloggers, at arms length and 24mm, decent bokeh through compression. And as you move the camera away from your face and the camera is pointed at an object of interest the focus pull is smooth via autofocus. Image quality is better than cellphone, video uses is better than GoPro, wrapped all within a package of a compact camera with incredible zoom range. However anything over 300-400mm then a need for tripod, monopod, gimbal rises significantly. Now the inherent “bads” Lowlight - My comparison uses cellphones and GoPros, and like cellphones and GoPros it will suffer in lowlight for video. Pictures are ok if you use flash and shutter is low. For video cap the ISO at 800. Anything above this and you’ll need to denoise the footage in post. build quality - I own the RX100 V and VI and the HX99 feels cheap compared to the RX100 cameras. But I’ll be honest, I baby my camera gear and sometimes taking even the RX100 V or VI I worry about them getting damaged when going to the beach or inclement weather. Summary for what it is, if you need a bit of umph over cellphone, GoPro and better overall usability with crazy useful zoom range for travel or outdoor, well lit events...... this camera is it. If lowlight is essential, then look somewhere else. It will perform marginally better in lowlight compared to your cellphone or GoPro. ... show more

Sony DSC-HX99 Compact Digital 18.2 MP Camera - excellent point and shoot camera. I was looking for a point and shoot - with** a Viewfinder as well as great zoom since I seldom get close enough to shoot close-ups now at my advanced age. This does the work for me. It will take a while to master all the menus and take advantage of all the features in the software... it's a lot to learn. That said - on Auto it takes great photos. Zoom is terrific and the clarity is as good and better! than my old 35mm SLR with telephoto. I love this camera but it obviously had been opened previously and the manual was missing. I got stonewalled when I tried to get the manual and kept getting directed to website where I could read it online - not useful when you’re trying to use it where there is no Internet, and not useful if you’d like to be able to flip back-and-forth between pages. ... show more

    • FINAL REVIEW: Not ready for primtime
FINAL REVIEW My replacement camera did not appear to have physical defects but it has some significant software/technical issues. Connectivity with the app seems to only work once and then it never re-connects. After restarting/resetting several times I gave up on that and just started taking pictures. The camera works OK but there are several buttons very close together so I frequently hit the wrong button or accidentally touched the screen. The software driving the camera is so bad, it's impossible to figure out what mode you ended up in afterwards so I would just have to turn the camera off and then back on. Lastly, the lens takes a couple seconds to start closing the lens after you click the on/off button. This thing is not ready for prime time. SECOND REVIEW I just received my replacement camera and the problem I identified in my review is not present so I'm revising my rating to 4 stars. I haven't been able to play with it enough to say more than it no longer has the previous problem. If you experience the same problem... return it. FIRST REVIEW This review is for the device I just received that I'm returning for a replacement. I'm hopeful my replacement doesn't have the same problem. The device I received has a problem with the control wheel. The wheel spins fine but using the left button meets some resistance and results in a loud popping noise when pushed. The up, down and right buttons do not have the same resistance nor sound. If you listen in the video attached to this review you can hear the loud pop when the left button is pushed. ... show more
