  • Worth it. More than the best picture, it’s a full theater experience
Size: 65 Style: TV Only
This tv has absolute blacks, infinite contrast. When I have the lights off and the screen is the only source of light, it caught me off guard how the room went pitch black during cuts. I was using it as a nightlight, and suddenly I couldn’t see anything because the movie was black for a moment. When the bars are on during letterbox, I can’t even tell, the pixels turn off when it’s black. Individual pixel control, it’s a game changer. I’ve seen 4k OLED, but this is peak 4k. The brightness is wow-level. I usually keep it low, 20-30%, but I pump it up for fireworks and it’s incredible. This tv was made for fireworks displays, that experience alone makes it worth it. I can’t wait to get new video games on it. The install was easy, it came clearly labeled with stickers as well as a quick setup guide and manual. The panels on the back I left off for easier hookups later on, the hookups are fairly easy to reach for such a large tv, and it all packs in such a thin panel. My old tv is almost twice as thick at 50”. The software setup was a little annoying. I went thru it twice. Those first three days it reset once, logged me out of stuff, kept prompting me to agree and register and accept various terms and conditions. It’s a lot, especially if you want to ignore Google. This is just a dumb tv without accepting Google, none of the apps work without it. I was pretty unhappy with the software setup experience. I was expecting a smoother experience, less ads and freemium slowdowns, and found it was like a hungry animal, trying to sell me on anything and everything. I got mad and did the minimum, then I got mad when that wasn’t giving me a good experience. I got mad when I had to submit to mysterious AI interfering with my curated experience. I haven’t gotten mad since that, however. Aside from the automatically updated backgrounds showing me images and options I dislike occasionally, and no clear way to change that, it’s been fine. I do enjoy the cross-platform recommendations sometimes. The Sony Pictures Core app is really cool that it includes IMAX, theater movies, all the best audio and picture tech. It has some really good classics in the free section, and they update. The 10 paid purchases is included is fun, like a loaded giftcard. Power saving is really good, it will dim for screen saver, turn off if ignored, adjust dynamically according to how I set it. I think it enters a standby mode before it shuts off, sometimes I’ll think it’s off and I hear it click like when I shut it off. The value is in being as good as it gets with the hardware technology. It is versatile, and there’s no feeling of ‘oh wow these graphics are sweet, imagine how they’d look on a better display…’ Animation is especially crisp and bright, Spiderverse on this tv is like a mini theater. The sound: it’s so good! It uses a sonic projection to map the room and customize the speakers so it sounds as good as possible. My other tv’s I’d get complaints from the other rooms that it’s too loud, I’d have to keep the level at a 6-8. With this tv and its sound architecture, I can get away with the volume up at 15-20 before it’s too loud in other rooms. For built-in speakers, I’m impressed. It has you sit where you normally sit, and designs the sweet spot around you. That’s one of the coolest features ever. I place a high priority on the sound of a movie, I think it’s more important than the pictures. This tv excels in both. On mine, I left the protective film on the screen for like a month because I couldn’t find an edge. I was losing it over the glare being so bad with any light at all, but I couldn’t feel an edge. I was questioning if it had even come with one, yet that glare would confirm it. There was a sticker saying which direction to pull. I pulled the sticker and it came off without the film peeling. I eventually used a knife and poked at the edge by the frame and felt the edge, carefully prying an edge past the frame. Once I had an edge loose, I peeled around all the edges, then pulled it off as indicated. It came off no problem after I found the edge, and there is no more glare. The shiny screen before I removed it did make fireworks look a little extra sparkly, which lessened the sting of feeling dumb for leaving it on so long. ... show more

  • New King?
Size: 65 Style: TV Only
Sony BRAVIA 8 II 65-Inch QD OLED TV, Google TV, XR AI Processor, 120Hz Refresh, PS5 Optimized. Lets get right to it. The 8 Mark II is the best tv I have ever tested. That goes all the way back to 1988 when I bought a Mitsubishi 26" stereo with my own money. I have tested over 30 tvs in that time. All of the brands Mit, Sony, RCA, Sharp ETC. I am not going to hit you with a bunch of technobabble. There are many reviews that get way down in the weeds. I am just a regular person who LOVES tv. I have a PS5 and Series X. I have over 5000 pieces of media. LaserDisc to 4K and everting in between. The color the Mark II puts out is jaw dropping! A 4k disc will bring a tear to your eye played through this TV. It has several different picture modes. Modes for gaming , movies ETC. There is a quick bright mode. This is the brightest picture I have ever seen! I didn't even know a flat screen could get that bright. I love it!! Mark II gets an A+ on picture The sound without a soundbar is incredible! As in you don't need a soundbar at all. But if you are looking at a TV like this you most likely have a soundbar. A+ on sound The HDMI inputs (4) is were there is some interesting choices. Two of them are 2.0b. The other two are 2.1. HDMI 3 and HDMI 4 inputs support 4K/120Hz and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). That is great. But all should be. I can not knock this down to far. You are getting 4 HDMI inputs. There are also two USB ports. I have never seen two on a tv before. Love that too. Then there is an optical input and Ethernet port as well. For inputs I give it and A. Does size matter? At 55" and 65" I know some people will fly right over this TV. I have two other tvs that are both 85". I still think for most people 65" will be fine. Most of my family live in the 55" to 65" zone. So I don't think the Mark II should loose points for this. Sizes A+. Do you game? I have my series X and PS5 hooked up to the Mark II. The tv does favor the PS5. No matter what is going on , if the PS5 gets turned on the Mark II stops everything and goes to that port. No so for the Series X. Both machines look fantastic on the Mark II. Again , best I have ever seen. Zero lag!. There is also a quick "gaming" calibration picture setting. Gaming gets an A+ Smart tv? The Mark II has all the apps you would expect. It runs Google TV. The interface is "Snappy" . I have never liked the "smart" features on tvs. They are slow and wonky. I just use one of the game systems for apps. The Mark II gets another A+ on "Smart" features. Lets talk about weight so a minute. The Mark II is on the heavy side. Instead of a wall mount I went centerweight stand. It is working well for my setup. I do have a small doubt if I made the right move there. If your going to hang the tv don't cheep out on the wall mount. No grade for this. Lastly , the price. As of this review the Mark II is $4000. This is the high end of tvs for normal people. The 55" is $3500. You need to ask yourself ," do I need the best of the best"? Right now this Tv is cutting edge. It's a Sony. If you have the cash I would argue there is NO BETTER TV on the market. Until they put microchips in our brain, this is perfection. I love this tv. I am saving up to get one. Highest recommendation! ... show more
