  • A great portrait camera, street camera, and much more A great portrait camera, street camera, and much more
Color: Black Style: w/ 16-50mm Set: Base
I've been wanting a decent portrait camera for the kids for a while now, when I see other people's pictures of their kids that weren't taken with an iPhone. At the same time, I have no interest in carrying around a DSLR - I was into photography decades ago, and had a film SLR, and just didn't take it anywhere. This camera was just the ticket - and much more. In fact, for my intent, I didn't need half the features on this camera - but contrary to popular opinion, I find most of the features extremely easy to use - and as a result, have been doing far more shooting with it than just family portraits. I drive through some colorful neighborhoods on the way to work, and have gotten in the habit of setting it for high-speed continuous autofocus and burst shooting, taking pictures out the window on almost every commute and getting amazing results. For my intended purpose - kids portraits - I was extremely happy with the first results using the kit lens - but since I added the Sony 50mm 1.8 prime , I have become completely sold on the importance of quality glass. For better or for worse, having a great prime lens gives you the ability to see the inferiority of photos taken with lesser lenses, and pictures which used to look great now look mediocre. A few things you should know about this camera: 1. The sensor crops photos, so a 50mm lens is effectively 75mm. You need to do this math for any lens you are considering. A 50mm is of very limited use indoors. The wide-angle primes available are either very expensive or just ok, but usually both. 2. There isn't a relatively massive lens lineup compared to some other brands. 3. The rolling shutter *is* a problem with video. Too much camera movement/panning and the video turns to jelly. That said, with a steady hand or better yet a tripod, the video is outstanding. I prefer the 60 FPS 1080p to 30p 4k. 4. The low-light performance is fantastic, especially with a fast lens. The pictures I posted were all taken with the kit lens and edited in Photoshop. ... show more

  • High Quality Mirrorless Camera that takes outstanding Photos and videos High Quality Mirrorless Camera that takes outstanding Photos and videos
Color: Black Style: w/ 16-50mm Set: Base
Pros:High Quality Mirrorless Camera that takes outstanding Photos and videos. I've been using it for a week took some indoors and outdoors from plants/Trees. The pictures have great detail and Camera focus is very precise. The Sony 16-50mm lens is decent for everyday photography but it lacks Image stabilization and has limited zoom. I bought The A6300 with Sony 55-210mm Lens and it revealed its strong capabilities even more. 4K Super 35mm, 24p, 100Mbs video quality is Superb but the buyer must have Fast SDXC Memory Card E.g Sandisk Extreme or Lexar 1000X to make sure recording occurs without errors. Also the space 4k video requires is intense 29:50min occupied about 21GB. I recorded 29:50 Minutes, the maximum allowed by cameras, in California around 72F. The camera did get a bit warm but recorded the entire clip without even showing the temperature warning sign. The warming up is normal since it drains battery fast but its intensity is nowhere near what the other reviewers claim it to be. They must be intentionally overheating the camera, e.g laying camera under sun for an hour then trying to take video! Cons: Price. Buyers must be ready to pay at least $1350 for the body+55-210mm lens. But the buyers do get best in class 4K video, best Autofocus in the Mirrorless and other functions present in A7 series for a third of the price. Battery is another disadvantage since it drain fast, especially when recording 4K video, but there are options for extra batteries and charger for A6300/A6000. Lack of Touchscreen but the controls are easy to use. Overall, i do recommend this camera for anyone that needs a superb camera for photography or taking 30min 4K videos and doesn't bother paying the premium for the high tech/quality. ... show more

  • AMAZING! Just follow a bit of advice! AMAZING! Just follow a bit of advice!
Color: Black Style: w/ 16-50mm Set: Base
Wow this camera is simply amazing. But take it from me, you cannot judge its capabilities with only the kit lens. Image and video quality are crazy good. At first I was disappointed because many of my first shots were soft and blurry. I took a chance and purchased the Sone E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS LE lens and I was so blown away at the difference. My advice on buying this camera would be to purchase the body only and a separate lens. The included 16-50mm isn't horrible but it holds the camera back...its like placing 100$ tired on a Ferrari. I paid $745.00 for the 18-200mm as Best Buy is having a sale (sorry amazon). Replay I don't think you could go wrong with any of the E-Mount lenses... other than the one it comes with. 4k video is out of this world. But the real star of this camera is the autofocus system. Sony says its the fastest on earth and I totally believe them. Stills and video both are crystal clear. If your debating on buying this camera, I would say take the plunge and get it before amazon runs our again. Just make sure you get another lens thank the kit one if you really want to see what the incredible sensor in the a6300 can do. Sony 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 E-Mount Lens This is the lens I bought and I couldn't be happier. Hope thats helpful. I know if you really work the a6300 to its fullest potential you won't be disappointed. ... show more

  • An Absolutely Amazing Camera An Absolutely Amazing Camera
Color: Silver Style: w/ 16-50mm Set: Base
I really like the size and portability of the Sony Alpha a6300. I owned a Nikon N60 SLR years ago and missed the days of shooting great photos, but the cost of having to develop film meant it got put in the closet and never touched again. Then a couple of years ago I got a GoPro Hero and loved how small it was, but I couldn't stand having the fisheye effect on my video and photos, so another camera got put in a drawer. Then I tried shooting photos and video with my Google Nexus 6P but the low light shooting was horrible and I would get easily distracted from focusing on taking quality photos. My youngest brother was getting married in Grand Cayman and I decided it was time to invest in a quality camera again and enjoy taking real photos and integrating it into my agency work. I did a LOT of research two months before his wedding and was looking for the sweet spot between price, photo and video quality, build quality, features and customization. I knew immediately that I wanted to purchase a mirrorless camera, but which one? I probably watched and read a hundred YouTube and article reviews of mirrorless cameras. I started my search by looking for cameras around $500 and the Canon G5x looked good for the price, but I wanted something that was not only compact but that I could switch out lenses. Then I found the Sony a6000 after seeing lots of great reviews and I gave it serious consideration because of the price and features. I also looked at the Panasonic Lumix G7 which was comparably priced but it lacked the autofocus quality of the Sony a6000. I ended up buying the Sony a6000, tried it out for a month and loved it, but I decided to return it and invest more money for a camera that had a mic jack and better features. So now I'm looking at a budget of $1,000 and I looked at the Fujifilm X-T20 but didn't like it's limitations on 4k video. The Panasonic Lumix G85 was a serious contender because of its touchscreen, IBIS and 4k video without overheating. I mean, it's even got a fully articulating screen! How could I ignore that? After seeing many reviews for cameras in the $1,000 range, I ended up giving the Sony a6300 serious consideration because of the image quality in low light and the phase detection autofocus feature. The difference in those two features alone was the deciding factor for me and I just had a lot of fun shooting with the comparable Sony a6000 for a month. The Sony Alpha a6300 menu has a lot of nice features and customizations (and even though I had not shot for years) I learned my way through the settings after a couple of weeks. The Sony Alpha a6300 is very compact, well designed and has a great build quality. The kit lens is amazing and I love the image and video quality. The size is perfect for day to day shooting. So, my next step was to turn the Sony Alpha a6300 into a run and gun video camera. I did lots of research on external mics and found the Tascam DR-22WL to be a great purchase. The Tascam DR-22WL mounts nicely to my Sony a6300 with a SmallRig Hot Shoe Adapter and the Movo MV-RC300 Line to Mic Attenuator Cable (-25dB). Once I have the Tascam DR-22WL mounted to my a6300, I just plug the line port to the left side of the Tascam, the other cable to the mic jack on the a6300, hit record on the Tascam and the a6300 and then I'm good to go! The Movo MV-RC300 Line to Mic Attenuator Cable (-25dB) also comes with a monitor jack so I can plug in my headphones and check the sound during recording. Overall, I am really happy with my set up. The Sony Alpha a6300 is a great compact camera that is a LOT of fun to shoot with and you can easily swap out high quality lenses. The price and features of the Sony Alpha a6300 are not available from any other camera manufacturer in it's class. Yes, it lacks IBIS, a fully articulating touchscreen and a headphone jack, but do I miss them? Nope. The EVF works great and I prefer that to an LCD screen which can get glare. I didn't see any noticeable difference in reviews on IBIS for video, but know that IBIS is really used just for photos. And I found a solution for using a headphone jack. You can use the HDMI output, a cable and a converter to make it work or you could buy an external mic which you will need anyway. You would easily have to spend $2,000 on another camera brand to get the same quality and features that the Sony Alpha a6300 offers. I highly recommend the Sony Alpha a6300 if you could not tell already. If you do decide to purchase the Sony Alpha a6300, then join the Facebook group and share your stories. ... show more

  • The video recording time limit can be removed! OpenMemories:Tweak app works. Excellent option for ethnographic research....
Color: Black Style: w/ 16-50mm Set: Base
October 2016 Update Have used the a6300 in field research several times now, with great success. Key video findings: * ECMW1M wireless mic produces EXCELLENT audio results! * No problem recording 3+ hours at AVCHD + MP4 using the dual record setting. * The MP4 file from dual record recordings seems to be about half the data rate of the lowest MP4-only recording setting, meaning you can get almost twice the time in a 4GB MP4 file before it starts up the next file. Kinda handy, so I'm using dual record most of the time. * Excellent ambient light performance and the image stabilization works well during walking shots. *********************************************** There are many informative reviews of the a6300 already, so I'll focus on the video use and recording time limits. The use case here is for up to 2.5 hours of ethnographic research in context (i.e., in the location where the person uses whatever product or does whatever task that is the subject of the research). The interest in using mirrorless cameras vs. camcorders is the large sensor and low light capabilities, as lighting conditions are by definition both ambient and highly variable, including many lower light situations. Further, camcorders are a dying breed so far as I can see, and we actually expect a bit more stability in the higher end mirrorless range, which is helpful for keeping a standard kit defined for a bit longer time. Years of experience with this type of research have taught me that a few key features are essential to meet the documentation quality required for further analysis and driving action with stakeholders: •Video recording time limit - Hitting the start-record button over and over in the midst of research is just not an option. The built-in 29m:59s time limit out of the box his is nicely overcome with the OpenMemories: Tweak app. I've been able to get 90+ minutes in 720p/.mp4 (seems to still be limited to a 4GB file size for .mp4, even though the a6300 card is formatted exFAT), and tested over 2.5 hours at1080p/25 fps. Still testing, but this is looking good, no overheating yet at these settings. •Video quality - generally 720p is sufficient, though 1080i/p is great if file sizes don't become too much of an issue. 4K is not necessary at this point in time for this purpose. Here the a6300 does a nice job bracketing these resolutions with 720p available on the low end in .mp4 and plenty of 1080 options in the middle. •Audio quality - external microphones are essential. Here the a6300 excels by providing two external mic options, one through the 3.5mm mic jack, the other using the intelligent hot shoe and Sony's own Bluetooth mic/receiver, the ECMW1M. We've had great success using Sony's other BT mic, the ECMAW3 in the field, and the ECMW1M will actually simplify things further by having the receiver mounted on and powered by the hot shoe vs. having yet another thing to have to wire up and keep track of battery usage/replacement. Net, preliminary testing looks good, with field testing coming next. Thought this might be of interest to those who do pursue video and have specific requirements outside the "ad hoc short clip" use case, and hearing about other's experience along these lines would be great. ... show more

  • and have been happy with the camera
Color: Black Style: w/ 16-50mm Set: Base
Some background: I have been a Canon 40D shooter for the past 10 years, and have been happy with the camera, I had no desire to upgrade cameras as I though the 40D was all I needed. When my 40D started have some focusing issues, I assumed I would just buy either the Canon 70 or 80D, I never really considered a non-DSLR camera (In Fact I wasn't even familiar with "mirrorless" cameras, as I was not up to date with camera technology) I also never thought I would ever consider a non-canon or non-nikon camera. Just by pure chance I ran across some mirrorless cameras while doing my research, although I was deeply dubious since these cameras looked like Point and Shoot cameras. I then realized that I really was getting sick of lugging around the DSLR in fact on vacation I would often leave the camera in the hotel room on occasions, and in everyday life I would never use the DSLR and instead would use my iPhone for photography. I saw that the Sony A6000 was highly regarded, so I started to look into the 6300. I'm so happy that I did, it turns out this camera is Excellent. The overall user experience is great and this is a Fun Camera. I am never going back to lugging a DSLR. I thought there would be a steep learning curve but there hasn't been at all, in fact it has been easy to adapt to this camera, and thankfully I have been able to customize the buttons to my liking. (such as setting EV compensation to the rear dial, just like on the 40D) There is a quirk where the flash won't fire on "silent" mode but no big deal. I would highly recommend any DSLR users to consider getting a mirrorless camera, basically I believe you get the image quality of DSLR with much better portability. I truly believe this camera is going to rekindle my interest in photography on a day to day basis, rather than just on vacations. The 4K video quality is excellent, and I might start trying to learn more about videography. The battery life of course isn't as good as the 40D BUT the convenience of being able to charge the camera with battery in it via USB is very very convenient (using a power pack). I have only had the camera for a week, but these are my initial impressions. By the way, the ability to wirelessly transfer files to my iPhone is extremely excellent (I have been shooting in RAW+JPG, the JPG files are transferred quickly) after transferring the files, Google photos on my iPhone will automatically back them up to google photos, this is a very convenient workflow for me. The product is Highly Recommended by me. I will add additional thoughts after more extended use. ... show more

Color: Black Style: w/ 16-50mm Set: Base
After countless hours of researching about this camera, i've finally decided to purchase it. This camera is amazing!! it is so small, but yet can do remarkable things. I am not a professional, I am just a guy who likes to take pictures of stuff on my free time, and this camera will get the job done no matter how big or small. Unfortunately, I had to contact amazon because my camera did not come with a battery and the kit lens had some imperfections on the lens. Amazon was super helpful with the whole process and I received a replacement in no time along with a reasonable discount for my troubles. Amazon is, and always be the best when it comes to customer satisfaction. Attached are pics shot with the 16-50 kit lens. This is a really good lens and I wouldn't focus on the negative reviews about this kit lens. This lens is supposed to get you started, and it does the job very well. I would definitely recommend upgrading the kit lens to reach the camera's full potential, but for a kit lens, it produces beautiful photos and videos. for less than 1000 bucks, this camera is a steal. ... show more

order this camera it said refurbish. i assume when you sell something that is refurbish that the manufacturer repair the issue. well looks like not in this case. after 10 min of recording video(in 4k) the sensor overheats ( no the body just the sensor as a normal a6300 would) and starts showing purple line that ruin the footage and i have to turn it off wait few minutes to resume recording. i contacted the seller they just said send it back, which i must admit its nice to hear but i live overseas, it took me great effort bringing this camera to my country and sending back and buying an other one its gonna be hard. looks like ill have t live with this but ill give them 3 stars just because they don't test what they sell and for an 800$ camera you better test it!. just to be clear this issue is on 4k on 1080 its not doing it but if you record 4k then go to 1080 it does happen. ... show more
